For a photobioreactor for mass-culturing microalgae, it is known that flashing light effect enhances the efficiency of photosynthesis. A dynamic model for photosynthesis was developed to elucidate this effect. A particular feature of the model is that discrete RuBP particles circulate in the Calvin cycle and their speeds in the cycle are determined by the amount of ATP generated in the photon reception process. This can realise the light saturation under continuous light and the flashing light effect under fluctuating illumination. Laboratory experiments were conducted to obtain model parameters by curve-fitting for Chaetoceros calcitrans. The present model demonstrates the light flashing effect moderately well and elucidates its mechanism reasonably. 相似文献

We sequenced nucleosomal DNA fragments of the filamentous ascomycetes Aspergillus nidulans and Aspergillus oryzae and then mapped those sequences on their genomes. We compared the GC content and nucleosome density in the exonic and intronic regions in the genes of A. nidulans and A. oryzae. Although the GC content and nucleosome density in the exonic regions tended to be higher than those in the intronic regions, the difference in the distribution of the GC content was more notable than that of the nucleosome density. Next, we compared the GC content and nucleosome density in the exonic regions of 9616 orthologous gene pairs. In both Aspergillus species, the GC content did not correlate with the nucleosome density. In addition, the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (ρ = 0.51) between the GC content of the exonic regions of the 9616 orthologous gene pairs was higher than that (ρ = 0.31) of the nucleosome densities of A. nidulans and A. oryzae. These results strongly suggest that the GC content in the exons of the orthologous gene pairs has been conserved during evolution but the nucleosome density has varied throughout. 相似文献

Recent studies reveal that the intracellular localization of pyruvate,Pi dikinase (PPDK, EC 2.7.9.1) in mesophyll cells of malic enzyme (ME)-dependent Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants varies among species, occurring not only in the chloroplasts but also in the cytosol in some species. The facultative CAM plant Kalanchoë blossfeldiana accumulates PPDK in both compartments of the mesophyll cells. In this study, the patterns of accumulation of the chloroplastic and cytosolic PPDKs were investigated for K. blossfeldiana plants with different CAM activities by immunogold labeling and electron microscopy. Greater CAM activity was found in plants grown under drought conditions with short days than under well-watered conditions with long days, and in lower leaves than in higher leaves. There was a trend that plants and leaves with greater CAM activity show denser labeling for PPDK in both the cytosol and chloroplasts. However, the ratio of the density of PPDK labeling in the cytosol to that in the chloroplasts was almost constant (2.4–3.0). Higher labeling for phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.31) in the cytosol was also correlated with higher CAM activity but there was almost no difference in the density of labeling for ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39) in the chloroplasts. These results indicate that the increase in accumulation of cytosolic PPDK is closely associated with the increase of chloroplastic PPDK during enhanced CAM expression. Chronic alcoholic myopathy affects up to two-thirds of all alcohol misusers and is characterized by selective atrophy of Type II (glycolytic, fast-twitch, anaerobic) fibers. In contrast, the Type I fibers (oxidative, slow-twitch, aerobic) are relatively protected. Alcohol increases the concentration of cholesterol hydroperoxides and malondialdehyde-protein adducts, though protein-carbonyl concentration levels do not appear to be overtly increased and may actually decrease in some studies. In alcoholics, plasma concentrations of alpha-tocopherol may be reduced in myopathic patients. However, alpha-tocopherol supplementation has failed to prevent either the loss of skeletal muscle protein or the reductions in protein synthesis in alcohol-dosed animals. The evidence for increased oxidative stress in alcohol-exposed skeletal muscle is thus inconsistent. Further work into the role of ROS in alcoholic myopathy is clearly warranted. 相似文献

Trade-offs in host-plant use are thought to promote the evolution of host specificity. However, usually either positive or no genetic correlations have been found. Whereas factors enhancing variation in overall viability have been claimed to mask negative genetic correlations, alternative hypotheses emphasize the sequential changes in genetic correlation in the course of host-range evolution. In this study, the genetic architectures of performances on different hosts were compared in two populations of the herbivorous ladybird beetle, Epilachna pustulosa, using three host plants, one being normal for both, one novel for only one population, and the other novel for both populations. The genetic correlations between larval periods on normal hosts were significantly positive whereas those between normal and novel hosts were not different from zero. There was no evidence for reduced genetic variation on the normal host-plants. These results suggest that the host-range is not restricted by the antagonistic genetic associations among exploitation abilities on different plant species, but rather that selection of different host-plants may improve the coordination between genes responsible for the use of different plants. 相似文献
