A late heading-time mutant line, HS276, which was induced by gamma-irradiation of seeds of the japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.) variety Gimbozu, exhibits an extremely long basic vegetative growth phase (BVP). A genetic analysis using the F2 population from the cross between HS276 and Gimbozu revealed that the late heading of HS276 is governed by a single recessive mutant gene. The subsequent analysis on heading responses of HS276 and Gimbozu to four photoperiods (12, 13, 14, and 15 h) and to the photoperiodic transfer treatment from a short photoperiod to a long photoperiod revealed that the mutant gene confers an extremely long BVP and increases photoperiod sensitivity under long photoperiod (14 and 15 h). The BVP durations of HS276 and Gimbozu were estimated at 30.1 and 16.0 days, respectively; the mutant gene, compared with its wild type allele, elongates the duration of BVP by 14 days. Linkage analysis showed that the mutant gene is located in the 129 kb region between the two INDEL markers, INDELAP0399_6 and INDELAP3487_2, on the distal part of the short arm of chromosome 6. None of the other BVP genes are located in this region; therefore, we declared this a newly detected mutant gene and designated it ef7. A recently established program to breed rice suitable for low latitudes, where short photoperiodic conditions continue throughout the year, aims to develop varieties with extremely long BVPs and weak photoperiod sensitivities; the mutant gene ef7, therefore, will be quite useful in these programs because it confers an extremely long BVP and little enhances photoperiod sensitivity under short photoperiod.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to clarify whether consumption of cadmium (Cd)-polluted rice or Jinzu River water exerted any influence on the occurrence of renal tubular dysfunction and/or Itai-itai disease. From the participants of health examinations conducted in 1967 and 1968, 3,078 subjects who had resided for >30 years in the present hamlet and were aged >50 years were selected as the target population and were divided according to their residence in 55 hamlets. In a multiple regression analysis, the regression coefficients between rice-Cd concentration and prevalence of abnormal urinary findings (proteinuria, glucosuria, or proteinuria with glucosuria) or patients with Itai-itai disease were statistically significant between both sexes. The correlation between the prevalence of users of Jinzu River water and the occurrence of glucosuria in men as well as abnormal urinary findings in women was not statistically significant. We surmise that eating Cd-polluted rice and drinking and/or cooking with Jinzu River water influenced the occurrence of Itai-itai disease. The occurrence of renal tubular dysfunction is likely to have also been influenced by both factors, with eating Cd-polluted rice having a greater impact on the occurrence of renal tubular dysfunction as compared to drinking and/or cooking with Jinzu River water.  相似文献

Terrestrial plants have evolved remarkable morphological plasticity that enables them to adapt to their surroundings. One of the most important traits that plants have acquired is the ability to sense environmental cues and use them as a basis for governing their growth orientation. The directional growth of plant organs relative to the direction of environmental stimuli is a tropism. The Cholodny–Went theory proposes that auxin plays a key role in several tropisms. Recent molecular genetic studies have strongly supported this hypothesis for gravitropism. However, the molecular mechanisms of other tropisms are far less clear. Hydrotropism is the response of roots to a moisture gradient. Since its re-discovery in 1985, root hydrotropism has been shown to be common among higher plant species. Additionally, in some species, gravitropism interferes with hydrotropism, suggesting that both shared and divergent mechanisms mediating the two tropisms exist. This hypothesis has been supported by recent studies, which provide an understanding of how roots sense multiple environmental cues and exhibit different tropic responses. In this review, we focus on the overlapping and unique mechanisms of the hormonal regulation underlying gravitropism and hydrotropism in roots.  相似文献

Salmonella typhimurium antigens were displayed on the capsid of a T2 bacteriophage to explore the potential of phage display for an oral vaccine. Segments of the flagellin proteins FliC (H1 antigen) and FljB (H2) were fused to the N‐terminal of T2 phage SOC to give two recombinant phages, T2FliCm and T2FljBm. Over 14 days, 19 BALB/c mice were orally administered twice, either with purified recombinant FliCm and FljBm protein, or T2FliCm and T2FljBm with or without host Escherichia coli. Feces were sampled over 10 weeks and examined for phage by plaque assay and for the presence of mucosal IgA by ELISA. Relatively few phages were detected relative to the amount administered (up to 8.21 × 103 PFU/g faeces) and none were detected five days after initial administration. The administration of a large number of phages appeared to cause no clinical symptoms. IgA concentration in feces peaked around four weeks after the second administration and subsided after eight weeks. The highest relative titers were observed in the protein group (0.37% for anti‐FliCm and 0.22% for anti‐FljBm) and the mouse group which received no E. coli (0.33% and 0.35%) despite the theoretical amount of protein contained in a phage dose being at least 80–465 times lower than the protein dose administered. The possibility that the immuno‐stimulatory properties of the phage create an adjuvant effect to enhance the immunogenic properties of the displayed proteins is discussed. Background: Gastric atrophy is a major risk factor for non-cardiac gastric cancer. Serum pepsinogen status could identify people at high-risk for gastric cancer development during our previous cohort study. However, lifestyle-related factors may additionally affect this risk.
Materials and methods: A total of 6983 Japanese were followed up by annual endoscopy in the previous study, and 43 cases of gastric cancer including two cardiac cancers developed. In most subjects, the body length and weight were measured and a questionnaire was applied to gather information regarding life habits. The risk of non-cardiac gastric cancer development during surveillance was re-analyzed based on serum pepsinogen, sex, age, body mass index (BMI), alcohol, and smoking habit.
Results: A total of 6158 subjects with 37 non-cardiac gastric cancer development (male/female = 4259/1899, mean age = 49.0, mean follow-up period = 4.79 years) were entered into analysis. In a multivariate analysis, old age (by 10 years; (odds ratio) OR, 2.8; p  < .001), alcohol (weekly; OR, 2.4; p  = .03), smoking (current; OR, 5.6; p  = .006 and past; OR, 3.9; p  = .04), and pepsinogen status ("atrophic"; OR, 6.2; p  < .001) were independent risk factors, whereas BMI was not. The annual incidence of gastric cancer was 1.2% in the older subjects aged ≥ 60 years with "atrophic" pepsinogen status. Moreover, it was as high as 2.9% when they had both alcohol and current smoking habits.
Conclusions: Old age, alcohol, and smoking habits additionally promoted the risk for gastric cancer in subjects with gastric atrophy.  相似文献

Thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) plays a role in the regulation of coagulation and inflammation. In addition to inhibiting the fibrinolytic system, TAFI may also regulate the bradykinin and complement systems. We hypothesized that TAFI also plays a role in defense mechanisms of the gastric mucosa during Helicobacter pylori infection. This study comprised 65 patients with gastroduodenal disorders: 41 patients with H. pylori infection, 13 without, and 11 patients with cured H. pylori infection. The gastric intramucosal concentrations of TAFI were measured by enzyme immunoassay. The gastric levels of TAFI and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 were significantly increased in patients with H. pylori compared to those without infection or cured H. pylori . The presence of TAFI was detected in gastric mucosal epithelial cells. The concentration of TAFI was correlated with the degree of gastric mucosal atrophy, inflammation, and disease activity. These results show that TAFI is present in the gastric mucosa and that it may play a role in the pathogenesis of H. pylori infection-associated gastroduodenal disorders.  相似文献

Although quantitative traits loci (QTL) analysis has been widely performed to isolate agronomically important genes, it has been difficult to obtain molecular markers between individuals with similar phenotypes (assortative mating). Recently, the miniature inverted-repeat transposable element mPing was shown to be active in the japonica strain Gimbozu EG4 where it had accumulated more than 1000 copies. In contrast, most other japonicas, including Nipponbare, have 50 or fewer mPing insertions in their genome. In this study we have exploited the polymorphism of mPing insertion sites to generate 150 PCR markers in a cross between the closely related japonicas, Nipponbare × Gimbozu (EG4). These new markers were distributed in genic regions of the whole genome and showed significantly higher polymorphism (150 of 183) than all other molecular markers tested including short sequence repeat markers (46 of 661). In addition, we performed QTL analysis with these markers using recombinant inbred lines derived from Nipponbare × Gimbozu EG4, and successfully mapped a locus involved in heading date on the short arm of chromosome 6. Moreover, we could easily map two novel loci involved in the culm length on the short arms of chromosomes 3 and 10.Key words: Linkage mapping, Transposon, japonica, Oryza sativa L., QTL analysis  相似文献
