Crisis-Like Behavior in China's Stock Market and Its Interpretation

In order for China to play a bigger, more positive role in the world, it is important for China to have a healthy capital market. This perception motivates us to examine the health of China''s capital market, especially the severity of the overall loss of the listed companies in China and the effects of accounting irregularities on the losses. We show the overall loss of the listed companies was very severe, in particular, crisis-like behavior emerged in the fourth quarter of 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2008. We further observe that loss in the fourth quarter was much greater than the average loss of the first three quarters in the same year. The most straightforward interpretation of this loss pattern is that companies underreported losses in the first three quarters, to boost their stock values in most time of the year. However, in the fourth quarter, accounting balance of the whole year dictated that the reported loss in the fourth quarter had to be much greater than the actual loss. Fortunately, such irregularity has been greatly reduced, thanks to the accounting reforms in China in 2007.     

Antitumor mechanism of Se-containing polysaccharide, a novel organic selenium compound

Recent studies on the inhibition of tumor growth by Se-containing polysaccharide were reviewed. Meanwhile, the possible molecular mechanisms of the inhibition of tumor cell growth through antioxidation, induction of tumor cell apoptosis, blockade of cell cycle, and enhancement of immunity by Se-containing polysaccharide were proposed. In the end, the potential application of Se-containing polysaccharide in the prevention and treatment of tumor was elucidated.     

A green and effective method for the determination of metalaxyl enantiomers in tobacco and soil by supercritical fluid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry

We reported a new methodology for the stereoselective determination of metalaxyl enantiomers in tobacco and soil. The QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) method was used for the extraction and clean-up of the tobacco and soil samples. Separation of the metalaxyl enantiomers was performed on an ACQUITY UPC2 Trefoil CEL1 chiral column coupled with supercritical fluid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (SFC-MS/MS), and the run time was only 5 minutes. Under the optimized conditions, the recoveries for the enantiomers were between 78.2% and 93.3% with intraday relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 1.1% to 5.4%. The limit of detection (LOD) for the enantiomers in tobacco and soil varied from 0.005 to 0.007 mg/kg, and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) ranged from 0.017 to 0.020 mg/kg. In this method, only a small amount of methanol was consumed to obtain a rapid stereoselective separation. This proposed method showed good accuracy and precision and might be suitable for fast enantioselective determination of metalaxyl in food and environmental samples. The developed method was further validated by application to the analysis of authentic samples.     

Peptide sequence analysis using exopeptidases with molecular analysis of the truncated polypeptides by mass spectrometry

Fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry is used for the analysis of the series of molecular products formed by the cleavage of polypeptide substrates with the exopeptidases carboxypeptidase Y and leucine aminopeptidase. By following the polypeptide molecular species rather than the released residues, sequence information is obtained regardless of the relative rates of cleavage of peptide bonds. In addition, unambiguous assignments of sequence can be made in the presence of multiple identical residues. The lower level of sensitivity for the analysis is in the picomole range. When carboxypeptidase Y is used, the method provides a specific and sensitive method for the sequencing of polypeptides from the C-terminus.     

若尔盖人-狼冲突现状与管理研究

大中型食肉动物肇事事件导致人类与野生动物关系恶化,给生物多样性保护工作带来巨大的挑战。若尔盖湿地是我国三大湿地之一,湿地、草原分布广泛,生物多样性丰富,畜牧业发达,但近年来狼(Canis lupus)捕杀牲畜的肇事事件时有发生。为了解若尔盖野生狼肇事件的空间分布以及牧民对人-狼冲突管理的看法,本研究于2022年对若尔盖县13个乡镇83个行政村进行走访调查。结果表明：(1)多数受访者(66.0%)认为在过去5年内,若尔盖县野生狼数量有所增加;(2)狼肇事事件具有明显的空间分异性,最严重的是包座乡。包座乡临近山区,该区域牧场面积广阔、牧民饲养牲畜数量多等原因导致该镇发生狼肇事事件较多;(3)对于狼肇事,绝大多数牧民(85.0%)更希望采取经济补偿或者驱赶措施,只有少数牧民(9.4%)希望采取捕杀的措施;(4)影响牧民对狼肇事管理措施的偏好因子中,受教育程度、年龄、民族以及被杀牲畜数量有显著影响。建议加强狼种群监测管理,采取措施减少狼捕杀牲畜,优化补偿机制,缓解当地牧民与狼之间的矛盾。本研究为当前若尔盖县野生动物保护和管理决策提供了依据,对其他地区大型食肉动物与当地居民冲突管理具有借鉴意义。     

Regulatory perspective of antibiotic biosynthesis in Streptomyces

Superoxide anion burst and taxol production induced by Ce in suspension cultures of Taxus cuspidata

Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by Ce⁴⁺ in suspension cultures of Taxus cuspidata was investigated. The burst of superoxide anions (O₂√⁻) occurred rapidly after the addition of Ce⁴⁺ and reached maximum at 4.3 h, while the total level of the cellular reactive oxygen species maintained unchanged. The intracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were activated while the intra/extracellular peroxidases (PODs) were inhibited accompanying the O₂√⁻ burst. The pretreatment of the suspension cultures with diphenylene iodonium (DPI), a suicide inhibitor of the NADPH oxidase, blocked the O₂√⁻ burst, inhibiting the cell apoptosis and taxol production induced by Ce⁴⁺. These results show that NADPH oxidase played a key role in O₂√⁻ burst and O₂√⁻ served as a mediator of Ce⁴⁺ for cell apoptosis and taxol production. The pretreatments of the suspension cultures with anthracene-9-carboxylate, an ion-channel blocker, nifedipine, a Ca²⁺-channel blocker, neomycin, a phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitor, or suramin, a G-protein inhibitor, decreased O₂√⁻ burst induced by Ce⁴⁺. It is thus inferred that Ce⁴⁺-induced O₂√⁻ burst, which mediated cell apoptosis and taxol production by activating the ion-channels, PLC, G-proteins and NADPH oxidase.
