An indigenous phenol-degrading bacterial isolate Cupriavidus taiwanensis R186 was used to degrade phenol from an aqueous solution under fed-batch operation. An exponential feeding strategy combined with dissolved oxygen control was applied based on kinetic characteristics of cell growth and phenol degradation to meet sufficient metabolic needs for cellular growth and achieve the best phenol removal efficiency. Without the stress of phenol inhibition, the optimal set point of specific growth rate of exponential feeding for fed-batch phenol degradation was found to be 0.50–0.55μmax (μmax denotes the maximum specific growth rate from Monod model). Meanwhile, the sufficient set point of dissolved oxygen for maximal phenol degradation efficiency was approximately at 10–55% air saturation. With the optimal operation conditions, the best phenol degradation rate was 0.213 g phenol h−1, while a shortest treatment time of 15 h was achieved for complete degradation of 11.35 mM (ca. 3.20 g) of phenol.  相似文献

We propose a compartmental disease transmission model with an asymptomatic (or subclinical) infective class to study the role of asymptomatic infection in the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases with asymptomatic infectives, e.g., influenza. Analytical results are obtained using the respective ratios of susceptible, exposed (incubating), and asymptomatic classes to the clinical symptomatic infective class. Conditions are given for bistability of equilibria to occur, where trajectories with distinct initial values could result in either a major outbreak where the disease spreads to the whole population or a lesser outbreak where some members of the population remain uninfected. This dynamic behavior did not arise in a SARS model without asymptomatic infective class studied by Hsu and Hsieh (SIAM J. Appl. Math. 66(2), 627–647, 2006). Hence, this illustrates that depending on the initial states, control of a disease outbreak with asymptomatic infections may involve more than simply reducing the reproduction number. Moreover, the presence of asymptomatic infections could result in either a positive or negative impact on the outbreak, depending on different sets of conditions on the parameters, as illustrated with numerical simulations. Biological interpretations of the analytical and numerical results are also given.  相似文献

Gene imprinting, the differential expression of maternal and paternal alleles, independently evolved in mammals and in flowering plants. A unique feature of flowering plants is a double-fertilization event in which the sperm fertilize not only the egg, which forms the embryo, but also the central cell, which develops into the endosperm (an embryo-supporting tissue). The distinctive mechanisms of gene imprinting in the endosperm, which involve DNA demethylation and histone methylation, begin in the central cell and sperm prior to fertilization. Flowering plants might have coevolved double fertilization and imprinting to prevent parthenogenetic development of the endosperm.  相似文献

Chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol)/gelatin (CS/PVA/GA) ternary blend films were prepared by solution blending method in this study. The thermal properties of the CS/PVA/GA ternary blend films were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The melting point of the CS/PVA/GA ternary blend film was increased when the amount of GA in the blend film was increased based upon the DSC thermal analysis. Results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated that the intensity of diffraction peak at 19 degrees of PVA became lower and broader with increasing the amount of GA in the CS/PVA/GA ternary blend film. Although CS, PVA, and GA are hydrophilic biodegradable polymers, the results of water contact angle measurements are still as high as 83 degrees, 68 degrees, and 66 degrees, respectively. A minimum water contact angle (56 degrees) was observed when the ternary blend film contains 50 wt.% GA (i.e. GA5). This behavior is primarily due to the reorientation of polar functional groups toward to the top surface of CS/PVA/GA ternary blend films.  相似文献

To explore the effects of deregulated expression of the EBNA1 binding protein 2 (EBP2) on cell growth, we generated human HEK293 stable clones constitutively expressing an EBP2-EGFP fusion protein. We found both RNA and protein levels of cyclin E1, a dominant oncoprotein, were elevated in the EBP2- EGFP stable clones. These findings were confirmed by flow cytometry bivariate analysis of cyclin expression versus DNA content. Moreover, the increase in p21 expression and the specific phosphorylation at Ser1981 of ATM and Ser15 of p53 were also observed in these stable clones, and these observations may explain the failure to observe an increase in Cdk2 kinase activity. In addition, after one year of passage culture, the EBP2-EGFP stable clones tended to lose 4 to 5 chromosomes per cell when compared to that of control cells. All of these findings provide a possible link between deregulated expression of EBP2 and tumor development.  相似文献

Recent research on fabricating scaffold‐type perovskite solar cells on plastic substrates has reported noteworthy progress in replacing the high‐temperature processing of TiO2 scaffolds and compact layers with various low‐temperature processes. Herein, recent progress in the laboratory is reported regarding the development of electrodeposited TiOx compact layers and brookite TiO2 scaffolds, both of which can be processed under 150 °C without greatly sacrificing their photovoltaic performance. Through systematic characterization of device properties and careful optimization of the fabrication conditions, a record‐high 15.76% power conversion efficiency of a plastic TiO2 scaffold‐type perovskite solar cell is demonstrated. In addition, bending durability and preliminary stability tests on this plastic perovskite solar cell show promising results and indicate clear directions for future improvement.  相似文献

Bovine lactoferrin (bLf) is a natural iron-binding protein and it has been suggested to be a prebiotic agent, but this finding remains inconclusive. This study explores the prebiotic potential of bLf in 14 probiotics. Initially, bLf (1–32 mg/mL) treatment showed occasional and slight prebiotic activity in several probiotics only during the late experimental period (48, 78 h) at 37 °C. We subsequently supposed that bLf exerts stronger prebiotic effects when probiotic growth has been temperately retarded. Therefore, we incubated the probiotics at different temperatures, namely 37 °C, 28 °C, room temperature (approximately 22–24 °C), and 22 °C, to retard or inhibit their growth. As expected, bLf showed more favorable prebiotic activity in several probiotics when their growth was partially retarded at room temperature. Furthermore, at 22 °C, the growth of Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus coryniformis, L. delbrueckii, L. acidophilus, B. angulatum, B. catenulatum, and L. paraplantarum were completely blocked. Notably, these probiotics started regrowing in the presence of bLf (1–32 mg/mL) in a significant and dose-dependent manner. Accordingly, bLf significantly increased the growth of Pediococcus pentosaceus, L. rhamnosus, and L. paracasei (BCRC 17483; a locally isolated strain) when their growth was retarded by incubation at 22 °C. In conclusion, bLf showed inconsistent prebiotic activity in the 14 probiotics at 37 °C, but revealed strong prebiotic activity in 10 probiotic strains at 22 °C. Therefore, this study enables determining additional roles of Lf in probiotic strains, which can facilitate developing novel combinational approaches by simultaneously using Lf and specific probiotics.  相似文献

137Cs contamination in living or agricultural environments may contribute to significant human internal exposure and cause adverse health effects. Contamination by 137Cs and other radionuclides was detected in a river valley in northern Taiwan, in the 1990s. Given that the radioactivity appeared to be widely distributed in soil, rice and several other food plants in the areas surrounding several communities in the late 1990s [Y.B. Nabyvanents, T.F. Gesell, M.H. Jen, W.P. Chang, Distribution of 137Cs in soil along Ta-han River Valley in Tau-Yuan County in Taiwan, J. Environ. Radioact. 54 (2001) 391], its possible impact on local occupants was further studied.Ten subjects in three families residing continuously in the highly contaminated valley and 10 non-exposed subjects matched for age, sex, and cigarette smoking habits from neighboring communities were evaluated for micronucleus frequencies and for degenerative nuclear changes in urinary exfoliated epithelial cells (EE cells). Micronucleus frequencies (‰) were significantly higher in the exposed subjects (4.79±1.21‰) than in the reference subjects (2.73±0.59‰; Wilcoxon 2-sample test, P value 0.0004). There were also higher frequencies of EE cells with karyolysis and condensed chromatin in the exposed subjects than in reference subjects. These results indicate that genotoxic and/or mutagenic effects on urinary epithelial cells occur in human subjects who have resided for a long time in a radioactively contaminated environment.  相似文献
