Summary Bird densities were estimated on 41 small islands and two mainland plots at a South Swedish lake both in 1976 and 1983. In the latter year, three additional plots were also censused. The ratio between combined densities of hole-nesting birds on the mainland and on islands was 3:1 both in plots without and with nest boxes. In plots with boxes combined densities of hole-nesting birds doubled compared with control plots. This increase was caused by a tenfold increase of pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca. Territories of this species were on average established about a week later on the islands compared with the mainland. Furthermore, 50% of the males on the islands did not attract a female. Densities of great tit Parus major, marsh tit Parus palustris and nuthatch Sitta europaea were unaffected by increased nesthole availability. For P. major this result contrasts with those in other studies.The density of chaffinch Fringilla coelebs in habitats with similar height and vertical structure was two times higher on the islands compared to the mainland. On the islands the density was the same on islands with only one pair and on those with two or more pairs. In spring, there were no significant differences between islands and the mainland in the proportion of leaves with insect feeding traces. The proportion of Salix leaves with feeding traces increased with island size, but this was not so for Alnus and Betula leaves. In late summer, the proportion of leaves with feeding traces were halved inside a plot with nest boxes and hence increased bird densities compared to a nearby control plot. This result was the same along the lake shore and about 150 m away from the shore.The discussion centers on the effect of man on the food-and nest site-availability of hole-nesting birds, food limitation of insectivorous birds and density compensation on islands.  相似文献

Summary Distribution of glycogen particles in semithin and ultrathin sections of biopsy samples from human muscles subjected to either short- or long-term running were investigated using PAS and Periodic Acid-ThioSemiCarbazide-Silver Proteinate (PA-TSC-SP) staining methods. Glycogen particles were predominantly found immediately under the sarcolemma or aligned along the myofibrillar Iband. After long-term exhaustive exercise type-1 fibers with a few or no glycogen particles in the core of the fibers were frequently observed. The subsarcolemmal glycogen stores of these depleted type-1 fibers were about three times as large as after exhaustive short-time exercise. Another indication of utilization of subsarcolemmal glycogen stores during anaerobic exercise was that many particles displayed a pale, rudimentary shape. This observation suggests fragmental metabolization of glycogen. Thus, depending on type of exercise and type of fiber differential and sequential glycogen utilization patterns can be observed.  相似文献

We investigate the circumstances under which the moments of the order statistics of the extinction times of a set of independent branching processes exist. This extends a result of Schuster and Sigmund,Bull. math. Biol. 46, 11–17, 1984, which was found in a special random selection model. From differentiated plants of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don we have isolated a specific enzyme of the vindoline biosynthetic pathway catalysing the S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methylation of 11-O-demethyl-17-O-deacetyl-vindoline. The enzyme we named S-adenosyl-L-methionine : 11-O-demethyl-17-O-deacetylvindoline 11-O-methyltransferase. This transferase exhibits a high substrate specificity. Obviously the O-methylation at C-11 precedes the O-acetylation at the C-17 position during the biosynthesis of vindoline.A second enzyme was detected which hydrolyses the acetyl function of vindoline. The distribution of this acetylesterase in C. roseus plants demonstrates that the enzyme is not specifically associated with the vindoline distribution in the plant material. Most probably this enzyme plays no essential role in the biosynthesis of vindoline.  相似文献

From differentiated plants of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don, a specific enzyme was isolated and named acetyl-CoA : 17-O-deacetylvindoline 17-O-acetyltransferase, acting on the biosynthetic formation of the Aspidosperma type alkaloid vindoline.The enzyme shows a high selectivity towards different substrates. The acetyl-CoA-dependent transferase also catalyses the reverse reaction by hydrolysis of the 17-O-acetyl group of vindoline in the presence of free CoA. This enzyme is localized only in vindoline-containing plant parts, but was so far not detectable in cell suspension cultures of C. roseus. The enzyme allows the synthesis of labelled vindoline with high specific activity, applicable for instance as tracer for radioimmunoassays of vindoline.  相似文献

Summary Phytoplankton production for three size classes (<20 m, 20–100 m, >100 m), total primary production and qualitative composition of phytoplankton populations were recorded from 18 stations in the south-eastern Weddell Sea in February/March 1983. Total primary production ranged between 80 and 1670 mg C m-2 d-1 with an average of 670 mg C m-2 d-1, nearly 70% of which was contributed by the <20 m size fraction (usually pennate and/or centric diatoms). Production of phytoplankton was in the higher range of values reported by other authors for the same region. Variations in primary production could not be attributed to composition of populations, ambient light levels or concentrations of macronutrients (N, P, Si). Phytoplankton populations had a higher diversity in the deeper parts of the Weddell Sea and coincided with different oceanographic situations. Three zones (along the shelf-ice edge from Atka Bay to Halley Bay, west of Halley Bay and off the Filchner/Rønne Ice Shelf) with different communities could be clearly distinguished.  相似文献

Summary Increased amounts of free sialic acid were found in body fluids, leukocytes, cultured fibroblasts, and liver tissue of a four-year-old boy with mental retardation, ataxia, and clinical and radiologic findings of a mild mucopolysaccharidosis. A diagnosis of Salla disease was made though in contrast to earlier reports, recurrent upper respiratory infections and hepatosplenomegaly were present already in infancy, and skeletal abnormalities of dysostosis multiplex were found in early childhood. Free sialic acid in the urine was identified as N-acetylneuraminic acid by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Sialidase activities were normal. Increased amounts of bound sialic acid were found in liver and cultured fibroblasts and were attributed to an intracellular inhibition of sialyloligosaccharide-degrading neuraminidase by excessive amounts of free neuraminic acid.
