To address how habitat destruction and hierarchical competition among species affect the spatio-temporal dynamics of a multi-species community, we present a compartment model in which multiple species undergo dispersal and competitive interactions in a patchy habitat arranged in a two-dimensional lattice. We assume that disturbances are periodically imposed on some parts of the lattice in a block, followed by a period free of disturbance. For convenience, species are ranked in order of competitive ability. We further assume that the intrinsic growth rate of species i, i , and the dispersal ability, D i , increase in decreasing order of rank. Our model can analytically determine the exact number of surviving species when disturbance is absent. In the presence of disturbance, we numerically examine how spatio-temporal changes in environmental heterogeneity affect species coexistence and extinction, for the case in which the value of i /D i monotonically increases or decreases with rank. The results demonstrate that (1) when the interspecific competition is smaller than the intraspecific competition, we can provide predictions on the prospective order of species to be driven extinct and the order of potential species to revive with increasing extents of disturbance; (2) when the interspecific competition is stronger than intraspecific competition, a small difference in the disturbance level can lead to drastic changes in the species composition, their densities and the order of species extinction. In addition, comparison with other similar models reveals that differences in species interaction in local population dynamics critically affect the disturbance-mediated species diversity.  相似文献

We here clarify whether noncovalent chiral domino effect characterized by the terminal interaction of a helical peptide with a chiral small molecule can alter the helical stability of N-deprotected peptides containing an L-residue covalently incorporated into the inner position. Two nonapeptides consisting of the midpoint L-leucine (1) or L-phenylalanine (2) and the achiral helix-forming residues were employed. NMR and IR spectroscopy and energy calculation indicated that both peptides adopt a 3(10)-helical conformation in chloroform. They strongly preferred a right-handed screw sense because of the presence of the midpoint L-residue. These original right-handed screw senses were retained on addition of chiral Boc-amino acid, but their helical stabilities clearly depended on its added chirality. Here, Boc-L-amino acid stabilizes the original right-handed helix, whereas the corresponding Boc-D-amino acid tends to less stabilize or destabilize it. This tendency was not observed for the corresponding N-Boc-protected peptides 1 and 2, strongly suggesting that the N-terminal amino group is required for controlling the stabilization of the original right-handed helix. Therefore, noncovalent chiral domino effect in peptides 1 and 2 can contribute even to the helical stability of a chiral peptide prevailing one-handed helix strongly through the midpoint L-residue. In addition, the N-terminal moiety of a 3(10)-helical peptide was found to generate chiral discrimination in complexation process with racemic additives.  相似文献

In order to reveal the influence of clothing skin pressure on digestion of food through the gastrointestinal tract, we examined the absorption of dietary carbohydrate and orocecal transit time of a test meal by means of a breath hydrogen test on 7 healthy young women. In this experiment, we collected breath samples from the participants wearing loose-fitting experimental garment on the second day of the experiment and from the same participants but wearing an additional tight-fitting girdle on the following day for 16 hours and 9 hours, respectively. Skin pressure applied by a girdle on participant's waist, abdomen and hip region was 15.5 +/- 0.4 mmHg (mean +/- SE), 11.0 +/- 0.2 mmHg, and 13.6 +/- 0.6 mmHg, respectively, and the values were 2-3 times larger than those of the experimental garment. The hydrogen concentration vs. time curve showed that breath hydrogen levels at its peaks (15:00, 15:30, 16:00, 16:30, and 17:00 hr) on the third day of the experiment were significantly higher than those of the corresponding time on the second day (p < 0.05 at 17:00 and 15:00, p < 0.01 at 15:00, 16:00 and 16:30). Consequently, significantly pronounced breath hydrogen excretion was observed under the "pressure" clothing condition (p < 0.01). On the other hand, the transit time of the test meal for the subjects wearing a girdle did not differ significantly from that for the subjects wearing the garment of less pressure (270 +/- 18 minutes and 263 +/- 21 minutes, respectively). These results indicate that the clothing skin pressure has an inhibitory effect on the absorption of dietary carbohydrate in the small intestine, but no effect on the orocecal transit time of a meal.  相似文献

The grazing and lysis mortalities of planktonic bacteria were estimated using the modified dilution method and respiratory quinone (RQ) analysis in mesotrophic Lake Biwa, Japan. The planktonic bacterial assemblages in the lake consisted of various RQ subgroups with different growth and mortality rates. The sum of total bacterial mortalities due to protistan grazing and viral lysis accounted for 96.6 % (range 89.0–107.2 %) of daily total bacterial production. This is the first report that successfully demonstrates a balanced relationship between bacterial production and losses using the modified dilution method in a lake. The growth rates of ubiquinone (UQ)-containing bacteria were faster than those of menaquinone-containing bacteria. Especially the dominant and fastest growing bacterial groups in the present study were the bacterial groups containing UQ-8 or UQ-10. The sum of their production and loss accounted for 60 % of carbon fluxes within the microbial loop. Thus, a large portion of the carbon cycling through the bacterial community in Lake Biwa can be explained by the carbon fluxes through dominant bacterial groups.  相似文献

The gregarious endoparasitoids Tetrastichus brontispae Ferrière is one of the important natural enemies of the coconut hispine beetle Brontispa longissima (Gestro), a serious invasive pest on coconut palm plants (Cocos nucifera L.) in Southeast Asia. Development at different temperatures, effect of host and female ages, effect of food and oviposition frequency and superparasitism were investigated in the laboratory. Females were allowed only one attack against one host in all experiments. The wasp developed in a host between 19 and 30°C, whilst no wasp completed its immature development at 16 and 31°C. Host and female ages affected parasitisation. Parasitoid emergence was high on day 0 and day 1 pupal hosts, and younger females produced more offspring than older females. The longevity of the female was affected not only by food supply, but also by oviposition frequency. The female survived longer when oviposition frequency was low. However, the total number of hosts parasitised by the female during her lifetime did not differ at different oviposition frequencies. In superparasitism, although the percentage of adult emergence and body size of offspring decreased with an increasing number of attacks per host, a host parasitised by up to four females could produce parasitoid offspring.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the role of the egg stalk in host discrimination by Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), an egg parasitoid of the bean bug, Riptortus clavatus Thunberg (Hemiptera: Alydidae). These experiments showed that females that have oviposited in unparasitized hosts within 1 h before the test discriminated between parasitized and unparasitized hosts. When protruding parts of the parasitoid's egg stalks were removed from hosts, the latter were accepted by experienced females. This suggests that the protruding portion of the parasitoid egg stalk functions as an external marker. This part of the egg stalk was responsible for host discrimination up to 8 days after parasitism. Internal discrimination was also observed on hosts 3 or 8 days after parasitism.
Résumé Des expériences de laboratoire ont permis d'examiner l'influence du pédoncule de l'oeuf dans la sélection des hôtes par O. nezarae Ishii (Hym.: Encyrtidae), parasite d'oeufs de Riptortus clavatus Thunberg (Hemip.: Alydidae). Les femelles qui avaient pondu dans un hôte vierge dans l'heure qui avait précédé l'expérience ont été capables de choisir entre des hôtes parasités ou non. Quand la partie saillante du pédoncule de l'oeuf de parasitoïde avait été extraite de l'hôte, ce dernier avait été accepté par les femelles. Ceci laisse supposer que la partie saillante du pédoncule de l'oeuf fonctionne comme marqueur externe. Cette partie du pédoncule de l'oeuf a été responsable de la discrimination des hôtes jusqu'à 8 jours après qu'ils aient été parasités, montrant une plus longue efficacité comme marqueur externe que les phéromones externes observées chez d'autres parasitoïdes.

The detection of thyroid stimulating antibody (TSAb) activity in the presence of thyroid stimulation blocking antibody (TSBAb) in Graves' serum is difficult because TSBAb blocks TSAb activity. We recently demonstrated that polyethylene glycol (PEG) augments TSAb activity in porcine thyroid cells (PTC) assay. This PEG-induced augmentation makes it possible to develop a sensitive assay to detect TSAb in the presence of TSBAb. We studied the effects of PEG on TSAb- and TSBAb-activities in PTC using 4 different preparations of the samples; (1) crude IgG using PEG 22.5% precipitated fraction (PF) from Graves' serum (0.2 ml), (2) crude IgG using PEG 12.5% PF, (3) serum (50 microl), and (4) serum (50 microl) in the presence of 5% PEG (final). When the effects of PEG on TSAb activity using crude IgG were examined, PEG 22.5% PF showed significantly higher TSAb activity than PEG 12.5% PF as reported previously. The augmentative effect of PEG on TSAb activity was also observed by the addition of 5% PEG to serum. We also demonstrated that PEG augmented TSAb-activities even in TSBAb-positive serum by two methods (crude IgG using PEG 22.5% PF and the addition of 5% PEG to serum). TSBAb activities were expressed by two calculation methods (A= [1 - (a - b)/(c - d) x 100] and B = [1 - (a - d)/(c - d) x 100], where a is cAMP produced in the presence of bTSH and patient's IgG, b is cAMP produced in the presence of patient's IgG, c is cAMP produced in the presence of bTSH and normal IgG, and d is cAMP produced in the presence of normal IgG). In the presence of TSAb, the values of A method were always higher than those of B method, since TSAb stimulated cAMP synthesis. We have developed two sensitive methods to detect TSAb even in the presence of TSBAb in serum using PEG; 1) incubation of crude IgG using PEG 22.5% PF from serum (0.2 ml), and 2) co-incubation of 5 % PEG with test serum (50 microl).  相似文献
