Differentiation of mate recognition systems is one of the important steps for speciation in animals. For some insects, a contact sex pheromone present on the cuticular surface is indispensable in discriminating reproductive partners. In Callosobruchus species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae), contact sex pheromones have been found in two species, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) and Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius). It was suggested, however, that these two species lacked the ability to discriminate their conspecific and/or heterosexual partners. To elucidate this inconsistency, we verified the existence of contact sex pheromones from two other species, Callosobruchus rhodesianus (Pic) and Callosobruchus analis (Fabricius). As a result, unlike C. chinensis and C. maculatus, the males of C. rhodesianus and C. analis were able to discriminate their heterosexual partners. Comparing cross‐copulation behavior, i.e., copulation behavior between two species, against these four species indicated that the mate recognition specificities were quite different. Males of C. rhodesianus and C. analis had highly species‐specific mating behavior, whereas males of C. chinensis and C. maculatus were much less specific. These results indicate that variation in mate recognition can arise even among congeneric species living in a sympatric environment, and this variation might have arisen during species differentiation. Based on our results in combination with previous reports on interspecific competition, we suggest that the observed asymmetric cross‐copulation behavior might be, at least partially, an adaptation for surviving interspecific competition. 相似文献

In the process of live-vaccine immunization of Salmonella enteritidis infection in mice, the relation between the number of bacteria in the organs of mice and their protecting effect was studied. Treatment with antibiotics was used to control the number of immunizing bacteria in the tissues. Mice, which were infected with 10(-5) mg (1,000 mouse MLD) of virulent S. enteritidis and treated with kanamycin simultaneously, acquired high antilethal resistance against infection with the same organisms. However, the administration of large amounts of kanamycin, which caused a rapid decrease in bacterial numbers in the organs of infected mice, was incapable of conferring immunity. This indicated the necessity of persistence of live bacteria in the host for the production of immunity. A large number of microorganisms were maintained for 53 weeks in a diffusion chamber inserted into the mouse abdominal cavity. The mice implanted with diffusion chambers containing large numbers of virulent S. enteritidis did not acquire antilethal resistance against infection with the same organisms, although agglutinins against S. enteritidis were observed in these mice. Agglutinin was also found in the fluid contained in diffusion chambers inserted into mice immunized with a killed vaccine of S. enteritidis. This indicated that antibody penetrated the membrane filter of diffusion chambers from outside to inside and vice versa. From these results, it is suggested that contact of live microorganisms with the host cell is necessary for conferring postinfective immunity in salmonellosis. 相似文献

Several water-soluble pigments were purified from gametangiaof Bryopsis maxima by liquid chromatography and characterizedby pyridylamination and high-performance anion-exchange chromatography.The structure of the main red pigment is proposed based on thedata of infrared spectrum, Mass spectrum, 1H and 13C NMR spectraand pyridylamino analysis. As a consequence, this pigment containeda tetrapyrrole with phytol and a sugar chain comprised of xyloseand glucose. The sequence of the sugars in the chain was determinedbased on its Mass spectrum. The pigment was similar to chlorophyll-originpigments observed in other plants. No aldehyde group, however,was present at C5 in the open tetrapyrrole chain. Oxidative stress has been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer disease
(AD) and Parkinson disease (PD). Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a key enzyme in heme catabolism, also functions as an antioxidant
enzyme. Here, we show that a (GT)n repeat in the human HO-1 gene promoter region is highly polymorphic, although no particular alleles are associated with AD
or PD. This newly identified genetic marker should allow us to study the possible involvement of HO-1 in certain human diseases.

A chicken linkage map, constructed with the Kobe University (KU) resource family, was used to locate the genetic locus for muscular dystrophy of abnormal muscle type (AM). The KU resource family is a backcross pedigree with 55 offspring produced from the mating of a White Leghorn F-line (WL-F) male and a hybrid female produced from a cross between the WL-F male and a female of the Fayoumi OPN line who was homozygous for the AM gene. In total, 872 loci were genotyped on the pedigree; 749 (86%) were informative and mapped to 38 linkage groups. These informative loci included 649 AFLPs, 93 MS, three functional genes, the AM locus, sex phenotype, and two red blood cell loci. The remaining 123 markers were unlinked. Nineteen of the 38 KU linkage groups were assigned to macrochromosomes 1-8 and 11 microchromosomes including chromosome W, while 19 linkage groups were unassigned. The total map was 3569 cM in length, with an average marker interval of 4.8 cM. The AM locus was mapped 130 cM from the distal end of chromosome 2q. 相似文献

We describe a sensitive determination of aspirin (ASA) and its three metabolites (salicylic acid [SA], 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid [2,3-DHBA], and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid [gentisic acid (GA)]) in rat plasma. Analysis was carried out by on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) using a methylcellulose-immobilized-strong anion-exchanger (MC-SAX), followed by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with UV detection. The lower limits of quantitation for ASA and SA were 60 ng/mL in 100 microL of plasma, respectively. This method was validated with respect to intra- and inter-day precision, accuracy, and linearity up to concentrations of 20,000 ng/mL for ASA, SA, 2,3-DHBA and gentisic acid, respectively. Pin1, a peptidyl prolyl cis/trans isomerase (PPIase), is a potential target molecule for cancer, infectious disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. We established a high-throughput screening method for Pin1 inhibitors, which employs a real-time fluorescence detector. This screening method identified 66 compounds that inhibit Pin1 out of 9756 compounds from structurally diverse chemical libraries. Further evaluations of surface plasmon resonance methods and a cell proliferation assay were performed. We discovered a cell-active inhibitor, TME-001 (2-(3-chloro-4-fluoro-phenyl)-isothiazol-3-one). Surprisingly, kinetic analyses revealed that TME-001 is the first compound that exhibits dual inhibition of Pin1 (IC50 = 6.1 μM) and cyclophilin, another type of PPIase, (IC50 = 13.7 μM). This compound does not inhibit FKBP. This finding suggests the existence of similarities of structure and reaction mechanism between Pin1 and cyclophilin, and may lead to a more complete understanding of the active sites of PPIases. 相似文献

The effect of dietary protein on p70S6k phosphorylation was examined in rats starved for 18 h and then fed either a 20% casein diet (20C) or a protein-free diet (0C). Refeeding the 20C diet, but not the 0C diet, increased p70S6k phosphorylation in both the skeletal muscle and liver. The plasma insulin concentrations were the same after refeeding the 20C or 0C diet, suggesting that a combination of dietary protein and insulin may be required to stimulate p70S6k phosphorylation. 相似文献

To ascertain the effect of exogenously applied hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on drought stress, we examined whether the spraying of soybean leaves with H2O2 would alleviate the symptoms of drought stress. Pre-treatment by spraying leaves with H2O2 delayed foliar wilting caused by drought stress compared to leaves sprayed with distilled water (DW). Additionally, the relative water content of drought-stressed leaves pre-treated with H2O2 was higher than that of leaves pre-treated with DW. Therefore, we analyzed the effect of H2O2 spraying on photosynthetic parameters and on the biosynthesis of oligosaccharides related to water retention in leaves during drought stress. Under conditions of drought stress, the net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of leaves pre-treated with H2O2 were higher than those of leaves pre-treated with DW. In contrast to DW spraying, H2O2 spraying immediately caused an increase in the mRNA levels of d-myo-inositol 3-phosphate synthase 2 (GmMIPS2) and galactinol synthase (GolS), which encode key enzymes for the biosynthesis of oligosaccharides known to help plants tolerate drought stress. In addition, the levels of myo-inositol and galactinol were higher in H2O2-treated leaves than in DW-treated leaves. These results indicated that H2O2 spraying enabled the soybean plant to avoid drought stress through the maintenance of leaf water content, and that this water retention was caused by the promotion of oligosaccharide biosynthesis rather than by rapid stomatal closure. 相似文献
