The correlation between vegetation patterns (species distribution and richness) and altitudinal variation has been widely reported for tropical forests, thereby providing theoretical basis for biodiversity conservation. However, this relationship may have been oversimplified, as many other factors may influence vegetation patterns, such as disturbances, topography and geographic distance. Considering these other factors, our primary question was: is there a vegetation pattern associated with substantial altitudinal variation (10–1,093 m a.s.l.) in the Atlantic Rainforest—a top hotspot for biodiversity conservation—and, if so, what are the main factors driving this pattern? We addressed this question by sampling 11 1-ha plots, applying multivariate methods, correlations and variance partitioning. The Restinga (forest on sandbanks along the coastal plains of Brazil) and a lowland area that was selectively logged 40 years ago were floristically isolated from the other plots. The maximum species richness (>200 spp. per hectare) occurred at approximately 350 m a.s.l. (submontane forest). Gaps, multiple stemmed trees, average elevation and the standard deviation of the slope significantly affected the vegetation pattern. Spatial proximity also influenced the vegetation pattern as a structuring environmental variable or via dispersal constraints. Inactivation of crystalline enzyme, Streptomyces protease G, by γ-ray irradiation in an aqueous system has been investigated. It is indicated that inactivation of the enzyme is attributable mainly to the indirect action of radiation. The inactivation curve is exponential and the G-value for enzyme inactivation is calculated as 0.1 at an enzyme concentration of 1×10?5m, which is not influenced by varying pH. Effects of various other solutes on radiation inactivation have been also studied. Halogen ions, especially iodine ion, and nitrite ion are most protective among various inorganic anions examined, and alkali metal and alkali earth metal cations are ineffective. Among various organic compounds examined, sulfur-containg compounds and unsaturated compounds are generally effective for protection of enzyme activity against radiation damages. The protective effect of benzene is enhanced by the substitution of electron donating groups. Chloroform and chloral are found to act as a synergist for irradiation inactivation. 相似文献

Effects of various chemical agents on the synergistic action of NaCl to the radiation inactivation of bacteria and yeast were studied. The remarkable modification of the radiation lethal effect by some reagents is considered to be a strong evidence for an indirect nature of NaCl synergistic action during irradiation. Most of these modification effects were restricted to the actions during irradiation, supporting the free radical hypothesis in which the short-life active species formed by radiation were considered to attack bacterial cells. Furthermore, pre-irradiation effects under various conditions suggest that the enhancement of radiation lethal effect by NaCl may involve the intracellular events. 相似文献

L-Fucose-specific lectin produced by Streptomyces no. 16-3 (SFL 16-3) was labeled with N- succinimidyl-[2, 3-3H]-propionate to quantitatively investigate its binding to human erythrocytes. The binding inhibition by sugars was competitive, and 5mM L-fucose or 20 mM d-mannose completely inhibited the binding. Among plant lectins, Lotus tetragonolobus, Ulex europeus I, soybean and wheat germ lectin showed competitive inhibition. The association constant and the average number of binding sites for human blood group O erythrocytes were approximately 3 × 107 M-1 and 1 × 106 cell-1, respectively. Trypsinization of erythrocytes preferentially increased the number of binding sites for human A and B erythrocytes but not for O erythrocytes.Membrane components were extracted from human B and O erythrocytes and their binding activity for SFL 16-3 was tested using the hemagglutination-inhibition assay. Poly(glycosyl)-ceramide was the predominant receptor and its fucosyl residue was essential for binding. The crude glycoprotein fraction showed only slight inhibition activity. 相似文献

The effects of irradiation in the JRR-1 (Japan Research Reactor No. 1, a homogeneous light water nuclear reactor; max. power, 50 KW) on microorganisms such as bacterial and fungal spores and yeast cells were investigated in comparison with those of 60Co gamma radiation. As far as the lethal effect was concerned the dose rate of radiation in the experimental hole No. 16 of the JRR-1 was equivalent to 3.0×l06~3.4×l06 r/hr with 60Co gamma radiation, and a ratio of the neutron effect to the gamma radiation effect on microorganisms in this hole was estimated to be approximately 3~5.4. The results different from those with gamma radiation were obtained in experiments such as post-NaCl treatment and spore germination. The considerable contribution of fast neutrons to the total biological effect of neutrons, in comparison with the thermal neutron effect, could be presumed from the microbiological experiments with the help of physical and chemical data. Morphological changes in post-irradiation growth were observed by means of phase contrast microscopy. No specific aftereffect was found. 相似文献

Although the electrolytically obtained DPNH was not completely oxidized by usual dehydrogenases or diaphorases, one of the authors noticed that its absorption band at 340 mμ disappeared completely when it was incubated with the extract of mung been seedlings. The reaction was found to be stimulated by the addition of methylene blue, and the product was identified as DPN. Thus, the reaction resembled that of diaphorase, although it was less specific to the configuration of DPNH. But unlike usual diaphorase, it required a cofactor, which was neither flavins nor metallic ion, but an unidentified acidic substance. The mucin obtained from a natto sample was found to be composed of 58 % of γ-polyglutamic acid and 40% of polysaccharide. The ratio of l- and d-glutamic acid was determined to be 58:42 using l-glutamic acid decarboxylase. The weight- and z-average molecular weight were 2.08 × 105 and 2.22 × 105, respectively. The distribution curve of the sedimentation coefficient showed a small heterogeneity. It has been found that although Brevibacterium lactofermentum No. 2256 is incapable of accumulating l-glutamic acid in a biotin sufficient medium, it produces a large quantity of the acid in the presence of sucrose fatty acid ester. In a biotin deficient medium, however, the ester brought the unfavorable diminution of l-glutamic acid accumulation caused by the decrease of glucose consumption in an incubation period. The undesirable effects were practically lost when the ester was added to the culture medium after more than eight hours in the course of incubation. This fact suggests that the ester is concerned with the growth of microorganism. It is very interesting to elucidate the interrelation between sucrose fatty acid ester and biotin. For the maximum accumulation of l-glutamic acid corresponding increase in amount of the ester to the increasing concentration of biotin was necessary. The proportional relation did not extend to excedingly high levels of the two implicating factors. The further observations concerning the effects of the individual fatty acid esters such as sucrose stearate remain unsatisfactory. 相似文献
