Plant–plant interspecific competition via pollinators occurs when the flowering seasons of two or more plant species overlap and the pollinator fauna is shared. Negative sexual interactions between species (reproductive interference) through improper heterospecific pollen transfer have recently been reported between native and invasive species demonstrating pollination‐driven competition. We focused on two native Impatiens species (I. noli‐tangere and I. textori) found in Japan and examined whether pollinator‐mediated plant competition occurs between them. We demonstrate that I. noli‐tangere and I. textori share the same pollination niche (i.e., flowering season, pollinator fauna, and position of pollen on the pollinator's body). In addition, heterospecific pollen grains were deposited on most stigmas of both I. noli‐tangere and I. textori flowers that were situated within 2 m of flowers of the other species resulting in depressed fruit set. Further, by hand‐pollination experiments, we show that when as few as 10% of the pollen grains are heterospecific, fruit set is decreased to less than half in both species. These results show that intensive pollinator‐mediated competition occurs between I. noli‐tangere and I. textori. This study suggests that intensive pollinator‐mediated competition occurs in the wild even when interacting species are both native and not invasive. 相似文献

Annual changes in testicular development and occurrence of parasperm were investigated using 2-year-old male fourspine sculpins Cottus kazika, based on the histological observation of testes. The male reproductive organ of fourspine sculpins comprised a pair of testes and a sperm duct that functioned as a sperm-storage organ. Male maturity was divided into the following periods: spermatogonial proliferation period (September), early spermatogenic period (October), mid-spermatogenic period (November), late spermatogenic period (December and January), functional maturation period (February and March), and recovery period (April to August). Spermatogenesis rapidly progressed from October to January and continued until the functional maturation period. Parasperm formation, which is known in some cottidae species, was observed in fourspine sculpins. Testicular regression of cultured fourspine sculpins progressed slowly during the recovery period when residual parasperm and empty spaces occupied the testis. The parasperm were immotile and oval and slightly concave on one side; additionally, they stained strongly with hematoxylin and PAS. Seminal lobules of the testis were filled with parasperm during the spawning period; in contrast, the sperm duct was filled with eusperm. These findings were observed in both cultured and wild fish. In this study, the functions of parasperm with regard to reproduction in fourspine sculpins are discussed. 相似文献

Prediction of species' distributions is central to diverse applications in ecology, evolution and conservation science. There is increasing electronic access to vast sets of occurrence records in museums and herbaria, yet little effective guidance on how best to use this information in the context of numerous approaches for modelling distributions. To meet this need, we compared 16 modelling methods over 226 species from 6 regions of the world, creating the most comprehensive set of model comparisons to date. We used presence-only data to fit models, and independent presence-absence data to evaluate the predictions. Along with well-established modelling methods such as generalised additive models and GARP and BIOCLIM, we explored methods that either have been developed recently or have rarely been applied to modelling species' distributions. These include machine-learning methods and community models, both of which have features that may make them particularly well suited to noisy or sparse information, as is typical of species' occurrence data. Presence-only data were effective for modelling species' distributions for many species and regions. The novel methods consistently outperformed more established methods. The results of our analysis are promising for the use of data from museums and herbaria, especially as methods suited to the noise inherent in such data improve. 相似文献

In the present study, using a high-fidelity digital microscope, we observed the sequence of appressorial development on the
germ tubes of a powdery mildew fungus isolated from red clover leaves. Based on its morphological characteristics and rDNA
internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences, the fungus was identified as Erysiphe trifoliorum, and one of its isolates, designated as KRCP-4N, was used in this work. The conidial germination of isolate KRCP-4N was studied
on host (red clover) and non-host (barley) leaves, as well as on an artificial hydrophobic membrane (Parafilm). More than
90% of conidia germinated synchronously and developed dichotomous appressoria (symmetrical double-headed appressoria) on all
substrata used. On host leaves, all appressorium-forming conidia developed hyphae (colony-forming hyphae) from conidial bodies
without extending germ tubes from the tips of the appressoria. On non-host leaves and on Parafilm-covered glass slides, however,
all conidia extended germ tubes from one side of dichotomous appressoria (two-step germination). In addition to the dichotomous
appressoria, we detected a few conidia that produced hooked appressoria and extended germ tubes from the tip of the appressorium.
Penetration attempts by KRCP-4N conidia on barley leaves were impeded by papillae formed at penetration sites beneath these
two types of appressorium. From these results, we conclude that the “two-step germination” of E. trifoliorum KRCP-4N conidia is the result of an unsuccessful penetration attempt, causing diversity in appressorial shape. 相似文献

Human synovial fibroblasts in culture respond to bradykinin with a 20-fold increment in intracellular cyclic AMP concentrations, however bradykinin does not directly activate adenylate cyclase activity in a particulate fraction derived from these cells. Bradykinin evokes a release of labeled arachidonic acid and prostaglandins E and F from synovial fibroblasts pre-labeled with 3H-arachidonic acid. Hydrocortisone inhibits the bradykinin induced increment in cyclic AMP and the release of arachidonic acid and prostaglandins E and F from synovial fibroblasts. Indomethacin, which also inhibits the cyclic AMP response to bradykinin, has no effect on the release of arachidonic acid from synovial fibroblasts. Indomethacin does, however, inhibit the quantity of prostaglandins released into the medium. These studies support the hypothesis that bradykinin does not activate human synovial fibroblast adenylate cyclase, but presumably activates a phospholipase whose products in turn result in the synthesis of prostaglandins. These and other investigations also suggest that a product(s) of the prostaglandin pathway causes the increment in cyclic AMP. 相似文献

G-protein-coupled receptors transmit stimuli (light, taste, hormone, neurotransmitter, etc.) to the intracellular signaling systems, and rhodopsin (Rh) is the most-studied G-protein-coupled receptor. Rh possesses an 11-cis retinal as the chromophore, and 11-cis to all-trans photoisomerization leads to the protein structural changes in the cytoplasmic loops to activate G-protein. Microbial rhodopsins are similar heptahelical membrane proteins that function as bacterial sensors, light-driven ion-pumps, or light-gated channels. Microbial rhodopsins possess an all-trans retinal, and all-trans to 13-cis photoisomerization triggers protein structural changes for each function. Despite these similarities, there is no sequence homology between visual and microbial rhodopsins, and microbial rhodopsins do not activate G-proteins. However, it was reported that bacteriorhodopsin (BR) chimeras containing the third cytoplasmic loop of bovine Rh are able to activate G-protein, suggesting a common mechanism of protein structural changes. Here we design chimeric proteins for Natronomonas pharaonis sensory rhodopsin II (SRII, also called pharaonis phoborhodopsin), which has a two-orders-of-magnitude slower photocycle than BR. Light-dependent transducin activation was observed for most of the nine SRII chimeras containing the third cytoplasmic loop of bovine Rh (from Y223, G224, Q225 to T251, R252, and M253), but the activation level was 30,000–140,000 times lower than that of bovine Rh. The BR chimera, BR/Rh223-253, activates a G-protein transducin, whereas the activation level was 37,000 times lower than that of bovine Rh. We interpret the low activation by the chimeric proteins as reasonable, because bovine Rh must have been optimized for activating a G-protein transducin during its evolution. On the other hand, similar activation level of the SRII and BR chimeras suggests that the lifetime of the M intermediates is not the simple determinant of activation, because SRII chimeras have two-orders-of-magnitude's slower photocycle than the BR chimera. Activation mechanism of visual and microbial rhodopsins is discussed on the basis of these results. 相似文献

Background
The objective of the present study was to determine whether the morbidity rates of the 2009 pandemic influenza A H1N1 virus (pdmH1N1) varied by age and/or sex.Methods and Findings
Retrospective analysis of 2,024,367 cases of pdmH1N1 was performed using the national surveillance data from influenza sentinel points in Japan. The male-to-female morbidity ratios (M/F ratios) in nineteen age groups were estimated as the primary outcome. The M/F ratios for pdmH1N1 influenza were: >1 in age groups <20 years and ≥80 years (p<0.001); <1 in age groups 20–79 years (p<0.001). This data suggests that males <20 years of age may be more likely to suffer from pdmH1N1 influenza than females in the same age categories. When the infection pattern for pdmH1N1was compared with that of seasonal influenza outbreaks between 2000 and 2008, the M/F ratio for pdmH1N1 influenza was higher in ages 3–29 years and lower in ages 40–79 years. Because the present study was based on the national surveillance, it was impossible to estimate the morbidity rate for the Japanese population. It is also likely that the data did not capture asymptomatic or mild infections.Conclusions
Although exposure to the pdmH1N1 virus is assumed to be similar in both boys and girls, M/F ratios were >1 in those younger than 20 years. The subsequent reversal of the M/F ratio in the adult generation could be due to several possibilities, including: greater immunity among adult males, more asymptomatic infections among males, less reporting of illness by males, or differences in exposure to the virus and probability of visiting a clinic. The phylogenetic position of turtles is a currently controversial issue. Recent molecular studies rejected a traditional view that turtles are basal living reptiles (Hedges, S. B., and L. L. Poling. 1999. A molecular phylogeny. Science 83:998-1001; Kumazawa, Y., and M. Nishida. 1999. Complete mitochondrial DNA sequences of the green turtle and blue-tailed mole skink, statistical evidence for archosaurian affinity of turtles. Mol. Biol. Evol. 16:784-792). Instead, these studies grouped turtles with birds and crocodiles. The relationship among turtles, birds, and crocodiles remained unclear to date. To resolve this issue, we have cloned and sequenced two nuclear genes encoding the catalytic subunit of DNA polymerase alpha and glycinamide ribonucleotide synthetase-aminoimidazole ribonucleotide synthetase-glycinamide ribonucleotide formyltransferase from amniotes and an amphibian. The amino acid sequences of these proteins were subjected to a phylogenetic analysis based on the maximum likelihood method. The resulting tree showed that turtles are the sister group to a monophyletic cluster of archosaurs (birds and crocodiles). All other possible tree topologies were significantly rejected. 相似文献
