Optimal strategy of plant antiherbivore defense: Implications for apparency and resource-availability theories 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Plants produce chemicals as methods against animal herbivory. Such chemical defenses are classified into two major categories:
(i) quantitative defenses with massive production of indigestible substances; and (ii) qualitative defenses with production
of poisonous substances. A mathematical model was developed that identified factors that favored the evolution of quantitative
defenses. Selecting an annual plant for simplicity, the allocation of photosynthetic production between growth substances
and defense substances was considered. If the plant invests more in defense substances, it can protect itself more efficiently
from herbivory but with a reduced growth rate. If it invests more in growth substances, the contrary holds. Using Pontoryagin's
maximum principle, the following results were obtained: (i) the plant should conduct quantitative defenses when the growth
rate (G), reflecting resource-availability, is low and the growth period (T) is long as well; (ii) if the plant invests in quantitative defenses, the optimal proportion of defense substances (χ*) should be higher asG is smaller, but it is independent ofT; and (iii) the value of χ* is not monotone for the effectiveness of defense substance (A), but has a maximum at an intermediate value ofA. Predictions of the model partly supported both Feeny's apparency theory, claiming that apparent plants or their parts for
herbivores should quantitatively defend themselves, and Coley's resource-availability theory, claiming that plants with rich

Selective elimination of chromosomally unbalanced zygotes at the two-cell stage in the Chinese hamster 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The gametic and zygotic selection of genome imbalance was investigated in the Chinese hamster by direct chromosome analyses of spermatocytes and preimplantation embryos from crosses between chromosomally normal females and males heterozygous for a reciprocal translocation, T(2;10)3Idr, abbreviated here as T3. The karyotypes and the frequencies of embryos observed at the first cleavage in the cross +/+female X T3/+male were consistent with those expected from MII scoring in male T3 heterozygotes. Therefore, it was concluded that there was neither gametic selection against genome imbalance nor zygotic selection from fertilization until the first cleavage metaphase. However, 9.1-10.8% of embryos were arrested at the two-cell stage, and karyotypes of these embryos were confirmed as 22(2,10,10,10(2)), 21(2,10,10), and 21(2,10,10(2)). The common abnormality of these embryos was partial monosomy of chromosome 2. Among day 4 embryos, some chromosomally unbalanced embryos, mainly with a deficiency of other segments of chromosomes 2 and 10, had fewer blastomeres than chromosomally balanced embryos. To detect variations in dopaminergic receptors and cholinergic activity in regions of postmortem Huntington's diseased brains, 3H-spiroperidol binding assays and choline acetyltransferase (ChAc) activities were carried out. A significant reduction in 3H-spiroperidol binding in the caudate nucleus, putamen and frontal cortex of choreic brains was detected which appeared to be due to a decrease in the total number of binding sites rather than to a decrease in affinity of 3H-spiroperidol for the dopaminergic receptor. In choreic brains, there were also significant reductions in ChAc activity in the caudate nucleus and putamen. The decreases of both 3H-spiroperidol binding and ChAc activity in the neostriatum suggest that the dopaminergic receptors are localized postsynaptically on cholinergic interneurons. Dopaminergic receptor alterations in the basal ganglia may be one of the causes of the abnormal motor movements found in HD while alterations of these receptors in the frontal cortex may be associated with the neuronal degeneration found in that area of choreic brains. 相似文献

Precise and quantitative reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) procedures are described which can be used in biogenic amine and neuropeptide research. The amine procedure was applied to various pharmacological matrices including plasma, heart tissue and brain. The use of peptide HPLC as an analytical tool for various neuropeptides is illustrated by studies on des-tyrosine-gamma-endorphin (DT gamma E) metabolism in the brain and the stability of an ACTH (ORG-2766) analogue during a chronic infusion in rats. The power of HPLC as a research tool in peptide pharmacology is described, discussed and demonstrated as an aid in the understanding of the pharmacological effects of exogenous peptides and the function of the brain. 相似文献

The novel pyrazoloquinoline, CGS, 9896, was a potent inhibitor of specific [3H]-flunitrazepam binding in several brain regions with subnanomolar KI values. The inhibition of [3H] propyl beta-carboline-3-carboxylate ([3H]-PCC-) binding by CGS 9896 was enhanced by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) but not by chloride ion. GABA enhancement of CGS 9896 inhibition of [3H]-PCC binding predicts this compound has benzodiazepine (BZD) agonist-type activity. Behavioral studies support this prediction. CGS 9896 was found to protect mice against bicuculline and metrazol induced seizure at doses that did not induce ataxia or sedation. CGS 9896 may represent a class of compounds with potential therapeutic value. The high affinity of this non-BZD compound suggests that CGS 9896 may also be of value as a high affinity ligand for the continued study of BZD receptors. 相似文献

The macrophage tumor cell line J774.1 replaced the function of normal macrophages in the induction of polyclonal killer T cells with 2-mercaptoethanol. J774.1 does not normally release soluble factor(s) which we have shown to be responsible for the differentiation of T cells to killer T cells. However, stimulation of J774.1 with LPS induced soluble factor(s) for T cell activation. An optimum concentration of LPS for the production of soluble factor(s) was 1 to 10 microgram/ml, which completely inhibited growth of the tumor cells. The production of soluble factor(s) was observed within 6 hr after LPS stimulation and reached its maximum level at 24 hr. Incubation of the cell line with 8Br-cyclic AMP and theophylline induced soluble factor(s), suggesting that LPS stimulation induced an increase in intracellular cyclic AMP which leads to the synthesis of soluble factor(s). 相似文献

Summary Disomic and trisomic cells of a patient with Down syndrome mosaic were used to study the effect of the additional chromosome 21 against an identical genetic background. The frequency of Ag staining and the participation in satellite associations were determined for each pair of acrocentric chromosomes. The additional chromosome 21 of the trisomic cells and its homologues proved to be regularly Ag positive. Therefore the trisomic cells showed more Ag positive chromosomes and more satellite associations per cell than the diploid cells. Thus, no compensation for the additional rRNA-gene dose could be found in the cells of the trisomic line. 相似文献
