To investigate the saccadic system in the mantis, I applied distracter interference paradigms. These involved presenting the mantis with a fixation target and one or several distracters supposed to affect saccades towards the target. When a single target was presented, a medium-sized target located in its lower visual field elicited higher rates of saccade response. This preference for target size and position was also observed when a target and a distracter were presented simultaneously. That is, the mantis chose and fixated the target rather than a distracter that was much smaller or larger than the target, or was located above the target. Furthermore, the mantis' preference was not affected by increasing the number of distracters. However, the presence of the distracter decreased the occurrence rate of saccade and increased the response time to saccade. I conclude that distracter interference paradigms are an effective way of investigating the visual processing underlying saccade generation in the mantis. Possible mechanisms of saccade generation in the mantis are discussed. 相似文献

Liquid cultures were successfully generated from cotyledons of two Sonneratia species, S. alba and S. caseolaris in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 0.1 μmol L−1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Adventitious roots differentiated from cotyledons of S. alba. Proliferated cells were subcultured and a large volume of suspension cells was subsequently established in 100-mL flasks.
All the cytokinins tested inhibited cell proliferation. After three years of culture, the potential to differentiate was tested
as indicated by greening of the cells. Greening occurred when suspension cells were transferred to solid MS medium with and
without 0.1 μmol L−1 2,4-D. Greening was stimulated by low concentrations of the weak auxins indolebutyric acid (IBA) and naphthaleneacetic acid
(NAA) while 2,4-D stimulated late-stage greening. Abscisic acid (ABA) inhibited greening. Gibberellic acid (GA3) at 1.0 μmol L−1 stimulated callus greening and was not inhibitory even when tested at high concentrations. Cytokinins were inhibitory in
combination with 0.1 μmol L−1 of either IBA or NAA. The cause of different effects of plant hormones on growth and differentiation was discussed. Small-scale
liquid media and 24-well culture plates of solid media methods developed in this paper are suitable for the optimization of

Vascular network formation is a key therapeutic event in regenerative medicine because it is essential for mitigating or ameliorating ischemic conditions implicated in various diseases and repair of tissues and organs. In this study, we induced human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) to differentiate into heterogeneous cell populations which have abilities to form vascular vessel-like structures by recapitulating the embryonic process of vasculogenesis in vitro. An autolysis chitinase was purified from the cultural medium of the anaerobic fungus Piromyces communis OTS1 by ammonium sulfate precipitation, affinity chromatography with regenerated chitin, chromato-focusing, gel filtration,
and chromato-focusing again. The optimal pH and temperature were 6.0 and 50°C, respectively, for a 20-min assay. The chitinase
was stable from pH 6.0 to 8.0, but was unstable at 70°C for 20 min. The molecular mass of chitinase was estimated by SDS-PAGE
to be 44.9 kDa, and its pI was 4.4. The enzyme activity, which was of the ‘endo’ type, was inhibited by Hg2+ and allosamidin. The chitinase hydrolyzes chitin powder and fungal cell walls at a higher rate than an artificial chitin
substrate. It can be concluded that extracellular chitinase is similar to cytosolic chitinase, but they are not the same protein.

Glyoxalase I is a ubiquitous enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of methylglyoxal, a toxic 2-oxoaldehyde derived from glycolysis, to S-D-lactoylglutathione. The activity of glyoxalase I in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe was increased by osmotic stress induced by sorbitol. However, neither the mRNA levels of its structural gene nor its protein levels increased under the same conditions. Cycloheximide blocked the induction of glyoxalase I activity in cells exposed to osmotic stress. In addition, glyoxalase I activity was increased in stress-activated protein kinase-deficient mutants (wis1 and spc1). Ventilation with a small tidal volume (V(t)) is associated with better clinical outcomes than with a large V(t), particularly in critical settings, including acute lung injury. To determine whether V(t) influences the lipopolysaccaharide (LPS) recognition pathway, we studied CD14 expression in rabbit lungs and the release of TNF-alpha by cultured alveolar macrophages after 240 min of ventilation with a large (20 ml/kg) vs. a small (5 ml/kg) V(t). We also applied small or large V(t) to lungs instilled with 50 microg/kg of LPS. The alveolar macrophages collected after large V(t) ventilation revealed a 20-fold increase in LPS-induced TNF-alpha release compared with those collected after small V(t) ventilation, whereas TNF-alpha was undetectable without LPS stimulation. In animals ventilated with a large V(t), the expression of CD14 mRNA in whole lung homogenates and the expression of CD14 protein on alveolar macrophages, assessed by immunohistochemistry, were both significantly increased in the absence of LPS stimulation. A large V(t) applied to LPS-instilled lungs increased the pulmonary albumin permeability and TNF-alpha release into the plasma. These results suggest that mechanical stress caused by a large V(t) sensitizes the lungs to endotoxin, a phenomenon that may occur partially via the upregulation of CD14. 相似文献

In 1998, the Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) launched a five-year national project entitled ‘Development
of Life Cycle Impact Assessment for Products’ (commonly known as ‘the LCA Project’). The purpose of the project is to develop
common LCA methodology as well as a highly reliable database that can be shared in Japan. Activities over these five years
have resulted in the supply of LCI data on some 250 products. Industrial associations voluntarily provided data. The results
of these activities are currently being made available on the Internet on a trial basis in the form of an LCA database. In
addition, a method entitled ‘Life-cycle Impact assessment Method based on Endpoint modeling (LIME)’ was developed. It is expected
that these results will be widely used in Japan in the future. This paper presents an outline of the results of the research
