Summary The feeding ecology of adult desert snails (Sphincterochila zonata), inhabiting a loess plain in the Negev Desert, was studied during a 7-year period. Energy flow and soil turnover determinations were made at the individual and population level on the basis of field observations and data derived from laboratory simulations. Sphincterochila zonata were only active on 8–27 winter days annually, otherwise they were dormant. The snails fed exclusively on algae that grew on the soil surface following rain. The mean annual dry-weight biomass of algae was 197.4(±118.1) gr·m-2. The dry weight biomass of snails ranged from 0.02–0.14 gr·m-2. Annual production in the food chain varied substantially from year to year (1–1539 Kj·m-2), but the net annual energy balance of the snails was always positive. Soil crust turnover, resulting from grazing of snails on algae, was estimated at 142 kg·hectare-1 during the study period.The annual magnitude of energy flow and soil turnover is determined by the soil surface moisture regime which in turn, is a function of rainfall patterns. Sphincterochila zonata may serve an important role in Negev ecosystems by dispersing soil algae and altering soil structure. The snails are not subject to substanding predation by rodents but may occasionally serve as an important food source for migrating birds.  相似文献

Summary Using leukocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) tests, we studied the activity of xenogeneic immune RNA (I-RNA) extracted from the spleen and lymph nodes of sheep after immunization with human breast carcinoma tissue or keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) in inducing lymphocytes from normal healthy donors to mediate immune responses in vitro. Mononuclear cells isolated from venous blood of normal donors, depleted of monocytes and, in some experiments, separated into T cells and non-T cells, were incubated with and without anti-breast carcinoma I-RNA or anti-KLH I-RNA for 20 min at 37° C. Then, lymphocyte adherence was determined by a Coulter counter method in the presence of 3 M KCl extracts of breast carcinoma tissues, control tissue, or KLH. Following incubation with anti-breast carcinoma I-RNA, the adherence of lymphocytes from normal donors was found to be inhibited only in the presence of breast carcinoma extracts. Following incubation with anti-KLH I-RNA, lymphocyte adherence was inhibited only in the presence of KLH. The principal effector cells involved appeared to be T lymphocytes. I-RNA treatment with RNase, but not with DNase or pronase, completely abrogated the LAI responses. In a blind study utilizing coded samples of xenogeneic and allogeneic I-RNA of unknown origin, samples containing activity against breast cancer extracts were identified correctly by LAI. The effect of industrial pollution on soil free-living nematode communities, trophic groups, and taxon composition was investigated along an 18-km transect that included the Angren power plant, a gold-refinery plant, farm areas, and recreation areas. Soil samples were collected in May 2005 and October 2006 from the upper (0–10 and 10–20 cm) soil layers in downwind directions from the industrial complex emission sources of the Angren industrial sites.Direct and indirect (through soil property changes), separate and integrated effects of industrial pollution and livestock activity on the soil nematode community were found. The total number of nematodes was found to be negatively correlated with the amounts of chemical elements in soil and positively correlated with the calcium concentration in soil. The nematode communities, trophic diversity, and taxon composition were found to be affected by the variety and concentration of chemical elements.The widely used ecological indices applied in the present research were sensitive to environmental disturbances caused by industrial pollution as well as livestock activity. The Wasilewska index, nematode channel ratio, and maturity index were mostly affected by trace metal concentration, while the diversity indices and species richness were mostly affected by soil property changes. The nematode channel ratio indicated that the bacterial-based decomposition process was dominant in soils exposed to both strong industrial pollution and livestock activity. The diversity indices indicated the disappearance of rare species in the industrial area and an increase of the contribution of common nematodes with increasing depth and distance from the unfavorable area. The current study confirmed that the grazing in accompaniment to industrial pollution, intensify a negative effect on soil nematode communities.  相似文献

In pregnant rats it has been possible to show that the distribution of cholecalciferol metabolites in their fetuses reflects the distribution of these metabolites in the blood. In these experiments, pregnant rats were maintained on a vitamin D deficient diet but were supplemented with radiolabelled cholecalciferol. The metabolites found were 25-hydroxycholecalciferol and 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol and, to a lesser extent, cholecalciferol. 1,25-Dihydroxycholecalciferol was not detected in fetal tissues, despite that ability of fetal kidney homogenates to hydroxylate 25-hydroxycholecalciferol in C-1.Kidney homogenates of newborn pups were found to possess marked activity of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol-24-hydroxylase, which was retained even in hypocalcemic pups born to pregnant rats that were fed a low-calcium diet.Injection of radiolabeled cholecalciferol to newborn pups resulted in the formation of 5/25-hydroxycholecalciferol and 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol. 1,25-Dihydroxycholecalciferol was not detected.Tissues thought of as target organs for vitamin D (in pregnant rats), namely, intestine, kidney and bone, were found to contain none or very little 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol.Mammary glands obtained from lactating rats were found to contain mainly the unchanged vitamin.  相似文献

Summary Multiple concurrent injections of MER, to give a total dose of 0.5 mg, at the site of palpable Rous sarcomas developing in outbred chickens following infection with the Rous sarcoma virus effected seemingly permanent regression of the neoplasms in 25 of 76 subjects. The purpose of this research was to investigate some physicochemical and solid-state properties of amoxicillin trihydrate (AMT) with different powder pH within the pharmacopoeia-specified range. AMT batches prepared using Dane salt method with the pH values from 4.39 to 4.97 were subjected to further characterization studies. Optical and scanning electron microscopy showed that different batches of AMT powders were similar in crystal habit, but the length of the crystals increased as the pH increased. Further solid-state investigations using powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) demonstrated the same PXRD pattern, but the intensity of the peaks raised by the powder pH, indicated increased crystallinity. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies further confirmed that as the powder pH increased, the crystallinity and, hence, thermal stability of AMT powders increased. Searching for the possible cause of the variations in the solid state properties, HPLC analysis showed that despite possessing the requirements of the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) for purity/impurity profile, there was a direct relationship between the increase of the powder pH and the purity of AMT, and also decrease in the impurity I (alpha-Hydroxyphenylglycine) concentration in AMT powder. We identify a highly specific mutation (jf18) in the Caenorhabditis elegans nuclear envelope protein matefin MTF-1/SUN-1 that provides direct evidence for active involvement of the nuclear envelope in homologous chromosome pairing in C. elegans meiosis. The reorganization of chromatin in early meiosis is disrupted in mtf-1/sun-1(jf18) gonads, concomitant with the absence of presynaptic homolog alignment. Synapsis is established precociously and nonhomologously. Wild-type leptotene/zygotene nuclei show patch-like aggregations of the ZYG-12 protein, which fail to develop in mtf-1/sun-1(jf18) mutants. These patches remarkably colocalize with a component of the cis-acting chromosomal pairing center (HIM-8) rather than the centrosome. Our data on this mtf-1/sun-1 allele challenge the previously postulated role of the centrosome/spindle organizing center in chromosome pairing, and clearly support a role for MTF-1/SUN-1 in meiotic chromosome reorganization and in homolog recognition, possibly by mediating local aggregation of the ZYG-12 protein in meiotic nuclei.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: Large-scale association studies, investigating the genetic determinants of a phenotype of interest, are producing increasing amounts of genomic variation data on human cohorts. A fundamental challenge in these studies is the detection of genotypic patterns that discriminate individuals exhibiting the phenotype under study from individuals that do not possess it. The difficulty stems from the large number of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) combinations that have to be tested. The discrimination problem becomes even more involved when additional high-throughput data, such as gene expression data, are available for the same cohort. RESULTS: We have developed a graph theoretic approach for identifying discriminating patterns (DPs) for a given phenotype in a genotyped population. The method is based on representing the SNP data as a bipartite graph of individuals and their SNP states, and identifying fully connected subgraphs of this graph that relate individuals enriched for a given phenotypic group. The method can handle additional data types such as expression profiles of the genotyped population. It is reminiscent of biclustering approaches with the crucial difference that its search process is guided by the phenotype under consideration in a supervised manner. We tested our approach in simulations and on real data. In simulations, our method was able to retrieve planted patterns with high success rate. We then applied our approach to a dataset of 72 breast cancer patients with available gene expression profiles, genotyped over 695 SNPs. We detected several DPs that were highly significant with respect to various clinical phenotypes, and investigated the groups of patients and the groups of genes they defined. We found the patient groups to be highly enriched for other phenotypes and to display expression coherency among their profiles. The gene groups displayed functional coherency and involved genes with known role in cancer, providing additional support to their involvement.
