Summary At the outset of this article I raised two questions. (1) Is the cultural homogeneity of the kibbitz reflected in its mental maps? (2) Are there differences between the rural and urban perceptions of environment? Two main conclusions can be drawn: (1) Despite a high degree of sociocultural homogeneity, two distinct conceptions of the term environment exist; the differences are in the scope of the area and in the number of elements recorded and are rooted in the age groups and in the personal range of activity of the interviewee. (2) The perception of elements in the rural environment does differ from that of the urban areas: cognition of the environment of the rural population is built around nodes and districts, while that of the urban population is built around paths and landmarks. The explanation of this difference is rooted in the different landscapes and in the individual's different personal activity within that landscape.  相似文献

Summary Incubation of intact mouse diaphragms with insulin in the absence of glucose resulted in a rapid inhibition of the subsequent cell-free phosphorylation of endogenous protein substrates in tissue extracts. The phosphorylation of added histone was inhibited to a lesser extent. The inhibition was observed both in the absence and in the presence of added cyclic 35 adenosine monophosphate. Acrylamide gel electrophoresis of phosphorylation products revealed a number of major phosphorylated polypeptides. The phosphorylation of several polypeptides was inhibited following short treatment with insulin. The unloaded heart is not stress-free. It is subjected to residual stress and strain. Their extent and influence on the global performance of the left ventricle and on local phenomena in the ventricular wall are studied by model simulation. The analysis focuses on the equatorial region of the ventricle, with an approximate thick-walled cylindrical geometry. The in vivo myocardium is considered to be incompressible, consisting of fibers embedded in a fluid matrix, with transmurally varying anisotropic microstructure in accordance with morphological characteristics.

The results show that residual strain is transmurally distributed with a pattern and magnitude which agree well with measurements. The calculated residual strains are within mean ± one standard deviation of the measured ones. Their magnitude was found to increase with increasing opening angle and with increasing wall thickness. The residual strain was found to have several effects on ventricular function: At volumes higher than the reference one it gives rise to more uniform transmural distributions of stress and intramyocardial pressure; it causes about 50% increase in the ventricular compliance at high volumes and doubles the suction of atrial blood at low volumes, thus facilitating the diastolic filling. In addition, residual strains cause bias of in vivo measured strains from their true values. This may significantly affect physiological interpretation of measured ventricular deformations.

In conclusion, the present structural analysis predicts that residual strain has favorable effect on left-ventricular diastolic performance, and gives rise to more uniform ventricular stress distribution.  相似文献

The feeding of a shipment of imported corn was associated with a severe reduction in growth and increased mortality in geese, and increased mortality in broilers. Pathological examinations revealed hepatopathy, visceral gout and mild nephropathy in geese, and in broilers an hepatopathy, which was often severe, and ascites. Samples of feed from affected geese farms were examined for up to 24 mycotoxins, and ochratoxin was found in 6 of 15 samples at levels up to 930 ng/g. The syndrome was experimentally reproduced by feeding geese and broilers suspect feeds with the natural ochratoxin contamination. It is believed that another, unidentified, mycotoxin was the major cause of the hepatotoxicity, and that ochratoxin served in this case as an indicator of a multi-mycotoxin involvement. The expression of four integral membrane glycoproteins was examined in detail utilizing monospecific antibodies during liver development. These included asialoglycoprotein receptor, a hepatocyte glycoprotein residing in the sinusoidal domain, and three bile canalicular glycoproteins, leucine aminopeptidase, dipeptidyl peptidase IV, and a Mr 110,000 glycoprotein denoted GP 110. It was observed that asialoglycoprotein receptor, GP 110, and dipeptidyl peptidase IV were present in low amounts in fetal liver and reached adult levels between 1 to 3 weeks. In contrast, leucine aminopeptidase was present in nearly adult amounts in 18-day-old fetal livers. These observations were qualitatively confirmed by indirect immunofluorescent staining of frozen thin liver sections obtained from fetal and adult rats. Further, in fetal livers it was found that leucine aminopeptidase was not localized to typical bile canalicular areas. Immunoprecipitation studies performed in the presence of proteolytic inhibitors using detergent-solubilized extracts of metabolically labeled liver minces revealed that GP 110 was present in low amounts as Mr 110,000 and Mr 105,000 polypeptides in 17-day fetal livers but by 21 days of gestation the larger polypeptide was the major synthesis product. Conversely, the apparent molecular weights of leucine aminopeptidase and dipeptidyl peptidase IV were not altered during development. Experiments determining relative rates of synthesis using excess amounts of antibodies showed that the concentrations of the three bile canalicular glycoproteins in liver during ontogeny reflect their rates of synthesis. These results underscore that plasma membrane constituents of the hepatocyte undergo dramatic changes in expression and localization as the liver changes its physiological role at birth.  相似文献

The common Mediterranean ruderal thistleSilybum marianum is associated with nutrient-rich sites. Its wind-dispersed achenes possess an oily food body, that is attractive to harvester-ants. Following removal of the oily body, the achenes are deposited in the refuse zone together with rich organic material and soil removed from the nest; while in the nest the achenes are partly protected from fires. The thistle grows successfully in the nutrient-enriched refuse zone and thus dominates patches in the grassland. Preadaptations to live in association with harvester-ants enableS. marianum to occur also on marking stations of male gazelle, on cattle dung deposits, and in synanthropic ruderal habitats.  相似文献

Summary Three synthetic peptides corresponding to parts of S4 of the first repeat of eel electroplax sodium channel were synthesized. The basic peptide was C 1 + which corresponds to amino acids 210–223 (eel channel numbering) and two subfractions: an external fraction, C 1ex + (amino acid 210–217); and an internal part, C 1in + (amino acid 218–221). Peptide C 1 + includes four of the charged amino acids of this domain; peptide C 1ex + includes three of the charged amino acids and is closer to the external membrane surface (according to channel models) than peptide C 1in + which includes the fourth charged amino acid alone.Antibodies generated in rabbits against these peptides were shown to be site specific. Using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique, we found that in rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells, the antibodies against C 1in + but not against C 1ex + had an effect on the gating parameters. They shifted the Na-channel inactivation curve towards hyperpolarization and decreased the slope of the Na-channel activation curve. These results demonstrate that during the conformational changes associated with channel gating, the fourth charged amino acid of S4 must be accessible to antibodies given to the external solution. The effect of external heat-load, exercise and dehydration on dynamic changes in plasma cortisol during the development of heatstroke was investigated. Thirty-three unanesthetized dogs were tested under two sets of climatic conditions: comfort conditions and hot-dry climatic conditions, half of them while exercising. Half of the dogs in each group were rehydrated. None of the dogs that were investigated at room temperature suffered heatstroke. Of the dogs exposed to high ambient temperature, all of the exercising, as well as five out of six non-hydrated dogs and one rehydrated non-exercising dog suffered heatstroke. Significant dehydration (6%–7% of body weight), occurred only under hgh ambient temperature. Plasma cortisol levels of all dogs that suffered heatstroke rose conspicuously for at least 5 h and returned to normal levels 24 h later. Cortisol levels of dogs who did not experience heatstroke remained within the normal range. Cortisol levels correlated with the severity of the stress leading to heatstroke. High and rising levels of cortisol, several hours after body temperature returns to normal, may support the diagnosis of heatstroke.  相似文献

The effect of light on the denitrifying characteristics of a nonphotosynthetic denitrifier, Pseudomonas sp. strain JR12, was examined. Already at low light intensities, nitrite accumulated as a result of light inhibition of nitrite but not of nitrate reduction rates. Exposure of this bacterium to light caused a photooxidation of cytochrome c, an intermediate electron carrier in its respiratory pathway. Photoinhibition of nitrite reduction was reversible, as nitrite reduction rates returned to preillumination levels when light-exposed cells were returned to dark conditions. Antimycin A reversed the inhibitory effect of light on nitrite reduction by preventing a reversed electron flow. Aerobic respiration by this bacterium was not affected by light.  相似文献
