The ability of Calabrian pine bark wastes (Pinus brutia Ten) for the removal of Fe(II) ions from aqueous solution at different concentrations and temperatures at a fixed pH was investigated. While the amounts of Fe(II) ions adsorbed onto the bark increased with increasing concentration, it increased slightly with increasing the temperature. Kinetics studies showed that adsorption process followed the first-order kinetic model as well as intra-particle diffusion kinetics. Adsorption isotherm followed both Langmuir and Freundlich models. And it was determined that the adsorption was favorable from a dimensionless factor, R(L). Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that the removal of Fe(II) by the bark was a physical process.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to gain insight into the factors that affect the permeation of volatiles through starch films. These films were obtained by casting gelatinized starch/water/glycerol mixtures. The films were dried and conditioned under different conditions (temperature and relative humidity) resulting in films that vary in the degree of starch crystallinity and glycerol and water content. The permeation of two model volatiles (carvone and diacetyl) at 20 degrees C and at 30, 60, or 90% relative humidity (RH) was analyzed gravimetrically. Further, the solubility of the two model compounds (under conditions where the permeation experiments were carried out) was determined. From the obtained permeation and solubility data, the diffusion coefficients of these compounds in the different starch films were calculated. The crystallinity in the starch films increased with increasing water content of the films during preparation. The water content of the resulting films in turn increased with increasing glycerol and when the films were exposed to a higher RH during drying or conditioning. For films with the same composition, the flux for diacetyl was greater than for carvone. The solubilities of diacetyl and carvone were slightly dependent on the properties of the films. It was found that with increasing starch crystallinity the diffusion coefficient for both compounds decreases, which is probably due to the impermeability of starch crystallites. Interestingly, in films with about the same extent of crystallinity, the diffusion can be described with the free volume model, with water and glycerol determining the amount of free volume.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe certain morphological characteristics of women soccer players and to examine aspects of training and performance. Twenty-two anthropometric sites were used in measurements of somatotype and body composition; flexibility, agility, anaerobic power, leg muscle power, and dynamic pulmonary functions were used as performance variables. Measurements were made on 17 professional athletes and 17 age-matched sedentary women who acted as controls. The women soccer players showed less fat content and less lean body mass than did the sedentary women. The mean somatotype for the soccer players was 3.07-3.55-2.43 and for the nonathletes was 3.57-3.35-2.90. Anaerobic power, leg muscle power, and agility in the athletes were higher than in the nonathletes, whereas no differences were found in flexibility and pulmonary functions (p > 0.05). The women soccer players showed more significantly mesomorphic, less endomorphic, least ectomorphic components and higher performance level than did the sedentary women.  相似文献

The last gene in the nuo operon of Escherichia coli, nuoN, encodes a membrane-bound subunit of Complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase). In this report, the gene for subunit N was disrupted by a 163 bp deletion in the chromosome, resulting in the loss of Complex I function, as measured by deamino-NADH oxidase activity. This activity could be recovered after transformation of the mutant strain by a plasmid that contains the previously identified nuoN gene and the upstream intergenic region between nuoM and nuoN. Mutagenesis of the first ATG downstream of nuoM led to a loss of function, indicating that this is the likely initiation codon for nuoN, and predicting a protein of 485 amino acids and 52 044 Da. Thirty site-specific mutations in nuoN at 19 different positions were constructed in a vector that expresses the full-length subunit N with both an octahistidine tag and an HA epitope tag at the carboxyl terminus. Highly conserved charged and aromatic residues were selected for mutagenesis, as well as a substitution that occurs as a secondary mutation in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). Membranes from the mutant strains were tested for production of subunit N by immunoblots and for NADH-linked activities. Mutants with substitutions at six different positions (K158, K217, H224, K247, Y300, and K395) had rates of deamino-NADH oxidase activity that were no more than 50% of that of the wild type and had reduced rates of proton translocation. These mutants also showed enhanced inhibition by decylubiquinone, indicating that subunit N interacts with quinones. The mutation associated with LHON, G391S, had little effect on these functions.  相似文献

Local skin necrosis after extravasation of doxorubicin hydrochloride (Adriamycin), a widely used chemotherapeutic agent, is a common problem in cancer patients. Even though several treatment options have been proposed for extravasation injury, there is still controversy regarding the management of such lesions. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of saline infiltration, vitamin C infiltration, suction technique, and early surgical excision as a treatment in a rat extravasation model. The authors planned their study in two stages. In stage 1, the lowest effective dose of doxorubicin at which a homogeneous skin necrosis was formed and the method of administration were investigated. Intradermal and subpannicular injections were made for six rats, using six different concentrations of doxorubicin (0.33, 0.5, 0.66, 1.0, 1.33, and 1.5 mg/ml). In stage 1, the intradermal injection produced homogeneous and uniform tissue necrosis. In stage 2, the efficacy of saline infiltration (group 1), vitamin C infiltration (group 2), suction (group 3), suction and saline washout (group 4), suction and vitamin C washout (group 5), and early surgical excision (group 6) was compared. The treatment options were applied 2 hours after doxorubicin injection. At the end of the seventh day, the presence and size of ulcers at the injection site were calculated. Fourteen days after injection, a histopathologic examination was performed for each treatment and control group. In groups 1 and 3, there was no statistically significant difference in the size of necrosis compared with the control groups. In groups 2, 4, and 5, the size of necrosis was smaller compared with the control groups, and this was statistically significant. Furthermore, in group 4 (suction and saline washout) and group 5 (suction and vitamin C washout), the calculated area of necrosis was smaller compared with other treatment groups, and this was statistically significant. The findings supported the assertion that suction and saline or vitamin C washout reduce necrotic tissue size in extravasation injury.  相似文献

In Escherichia coli the osmoprotective compound glycine betaine is produced from choline by two enzymes; choline dehydrogenase (CDH) oxidizes choline to betaine aldehyde and then further on to glycine betaine, while betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH) facilitates the conversion of betaine aldehyde to glycine betaine. To evaluate the importance of BADH, a BADH/CDH fusion enzyme was constructed and expressed in E. coli and in Nicotiana tabacum. The fusion enzyme displayed both enzyme activities, and a coupled reaction could be measured. The enzyme was characterized regarding molecular weight and the dependence of the enzyme activities on environmental factors (salt, pH, and poly(ethylene glycol) addition). At high choline concentrations, E. coli cells expressing BADH/CDH were able to grow to higher final densities and to accumulate more glycine betaine than cells expressing CDH only. The intracellular glycine betaine levels were almost 5-fold higher for BADH/CDH when product concentration was related to CDH activity. Also, after culturing the cells at high NaCl concentrations, more glycine betaine was accumulated. On medium containing 20 mM choline, transgenic tobacco plants expressing BADH/CDH grew considerably faster than vector-transformed control plants.  相似文献

Lactulose and lactitol, non-absorbable disaccharides, prevent bacterial translocation (BT) arising from the gut. In contrast, lack of food into the gut leads to coliform bacterial overgrowth and even if it does not cause BT, can induce the risk from other stimuli for BT. In this study, we tested whether lactulose and lactitol affected populations of coliform bacteria in the caecum during starvation in Sprague-Dawley rats. Three groups of rats were starved for 72 h and given oral 2 ml undiluted lactulose (670 mg/ml), 2 ml undiluted lactitol (666 mg/ml) or 2 ml physiological saline, respectively, once a day. The caecum and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) were removed for microbiological and histopathological analyses. The highest degree of coliform bacterial overgrowth, BT to MLNs and histopathological damage were observed in lactulose-treated rats, followed by the group treated with lactitol. As a result of this study, both drugs, especially lactulose augmented the proliferation and translocation tendency of coliform bacteria in the caecum during 72-h starvation in rats.  相似文献

This report reviews the way in which classical embryology is taught and interpreted at the Buca Faculty of Education, in Dokuz Eylul University (Turkey). This university is one of the leading teacher-education institutions in Turkey. My course is taught with appreciation of the fact that students are thinking ideologically rather than scientifically with regard to creationism and evolution in both cognitive and educational processes. However, this ideological orientation, along with lack of classroom time and material resources, hinders my goal of a student-centered education. Being flexible with regard to philosophical and metaphysical issues on which concepts of evolution and creationism are in conflict, is constructive for student development and represents the approach I endeavor to pursue.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of radiofrequency radiation emitted from cellular phones on the lipid composition, malondialdehyde concentration, p53 immune reactivity, sperm count, morphology, histological structure of testes, and on rectal temperature of rats exposed to microwave radiation emitted from cellular phones. Sixteen Spraque-Dawley rats were separated into two groups of eight, sham exposed (control) and experimental. The rats were confined in plexiglas cages specially designed for this study, and cellular phones were placed 0.5 cm under the cages. For the experimental group, cellular phones were activated 20 min per day (7 days a week) for 1 month. For the control group, the cellular phones were placed beneath the cages for 20 min a day, but the phones were turned off. Rectal temperatures were measured weekly. For 250 mW radiated power, the whole body average SAR (rms) is 0.52 W/kg and 1 g averaged peak SAR (rms) is 3.13 W/kg. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used for statistical comparisons of groups. No statistically significant alteration in any of the endpoints was noted. This study found no evidence suggesting an adverse effect of cell phone exposure on measures of testicular function or structure.  相似文献

In this study, rats were made to inhale cigarette smoke in a specifically prepared container for different periods. The lung tissue samples of the subjects were examined by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Malonaldehyde, one of the free oxygen radicals was determined in lungs and plasma. The catalase activity level of erythrocyte and arginase levels were determined. Three groups were formed. The rats in the Ist and IInd groups were made to inhale cigarette smoke for 30 and 60 minutes a day for a total period of 3 months. Control group, the rats in the IIIrd group (controls) were made to inhale clean air during the same periods. An increase in the number of macrophages was observed in the pulmonary tissue of the exposed groups. Especially in the group that inhaled the smoke for long periods, the number of macrophages and the inclusion bodies contained in them increased. These differences could easily be observed in TEM studies. In the light microscopy and SEM observations, it arouse attention that the alveolar macrophages occurred as sets and their activation increased. Depending on the length of the exposure to cigarette smoke, an increase in the number of macrophages was observed. Statistically significant increases were determined in the malonaldehyde levels of pulmonary tissue and plasma when compared to the control group. Besides significant increases were found in the catalase activity levels of erythrocytes in the experimental groups.  相似文献
