1. To reduce the risk of being eaten by predators, prey alter their morphology or behaviour. This response can be tuned to the current danger if chemical or other cues associated with predators inform the prey about the risks involved. 2. It is well known that various prey species discriminate between chemical cues from predators that fed on conspecific prey and those that fed on heterospecific prey, and react stronger to the first. It is therefore expected that generalist predators are more successful in capturing a given prey species when they are contaminated with chemical cues from another prey species instead of cues from the same prey species. 3. Here, a generalist predatory mite was studied that feeds on thrips larvae as well as on whitefly eggs and crawlers. Mites were marked with cues (i.e. body fluids) of one of these two prey species and were subsequently offered thrips larva. 4. Predators marked with thrips cues killed significantly fewer thrips than predators marked with whitefly cues, even though the predator's tendency to attack was the same. In addition, more thrips larvae sought refuge in the presence of a predatory mite marked with thrips cues instead of whitefly cues. 5. The simultaneous study of the temporal dynamics of foraging behaviour, diet and seed abundance is essential to assess the way in which resources affect the behaviour and ecology of harvester ants. Here, we evaluate how fluctuations in grass seed abundance during three consecutive growing seasons influenced the foraging behaviour and diet of the harvester ants Pogonomyrmex rastratus, P. mendozanus and P. inermis in the central Monte desert, Argentina. Seed abundance of the most consumed grasses varied greatly through ant activity season, and ants altered their foraging behaviour in response to those changes. Foragers spent more time travelling and searching for food, and their foraging trips took longer during the low seed availability season. Foraging distance was very similar among species and, contrary to our expectations, did not vary between seasons. Foraging success of P. rastratus and P. inermis increased during the high availability season. This matched the seasonal pattern of foraging activity, suggesting that colonies may detect seed abundance and regulate their foraging effort with the rate of forager success. Although grass seeds were the main item in the diet of the three species, P. mendozanus, and to a lesser extent P. rastratus, turned more generalist when grass seeds were scarce. In contrast, P. inermis showed a very narrow diet breadth, only harvesting grass seeds in both seasons. Our results indicate the relevance of seed availability on foraging behaviour of harvester ants, which should be taken into account when predicting and evaluating the effect of ants on seed resources as well as numerical responses of harvester ant populations to the temporal and spatial variations in grass seed abundance. 相似文献

Physical disorders are, compared to the general population, more prevalent
in people with severe mental illness (SMI). Although this excess morbidity
and mortality is largely due to modifiable lifestyle risk factors, the screening
and assessment of physical health aspects remains poor, even in developed
countries. Moreover, specific patient, provider, treatment and system factors
act as barriers to the recognition and to the management of physical diseases
in people with SMI. Psychiatrists can play a pivotal role in the improvement
of the physical health of these patients by expanding their task from clinical
psychiatric care to the monitoring and treatment of crucial physical parameters.
At a system level, actions are not easy to realize, especially for developing
countries. However, at an individual level, even simple and very basic monitoring
and treatment actions, undertaken by the treating clinician, can already improve
the problem of suboptimal medical care in this population. Adhering to monitoring
and treatment guidelines will result in a substantial enhancement of physical
health outcomes. Furthermore, psychiatrists can help educate and motivate
people with SMI to address their suboptimal lifestyle, including smoking,
unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. The adoption of the recommendations presented
in this paper across health care systems throughout the world will contribute
to a significant improvement in the medical and related psychiatric health

Despite the fact that certain prominent structures such as theeight comb-rows at first suggest an octomerous radial symmetryin ctenophores, close examination of their anatomy reveals ratherthe existence of two main planes, the sagittal and the transverse.Further, in certain forms in which one plane or the other hasbecome predominant, an apparent bilateral symmetry emerges. Relationships between anatomical and physiological symmetrywere looked for by studying the behavior of Beroe ovata andBeroe forskalii, both with regard to coordinated ciliary movementsbetween the comb-rows, and to the postures assumed during locomotion,balance, and rest in intact animals, and in animals from whichthe aboral organ had been removed. Swimming behavior is found to exhibit an octomerous functionalsymmetry. Bendings and vertical balance, however, show a tetramerousorganization. In the last case the unique properties of thestatocyst, with a structure characteristic of a regulator ofcybernetic patterns, the machines of which are the comb-rows,permit the most efficient integration of all the phenomena involvedin maintaining the vertical position. Extreme events such as heat waves are emerging as a key facet of climate change, but to date, experiments on the impacts on plants are scarce. Experimental simulation of heat waves requires knowledge of regional heat wave characteristics, as plant responses depend heavily on meteorological conditions. We analysed nine Western European meteorological datasets, and found that heat waves occurring during the growing season in this region encompass more sunshine (+ 69%), lower precipitation (?78%) and a larger vapour pressure deficit (VPD) (+ 111%) compared with normal conditions. Possible consequences for plant responses are discussed, with emphasis on the likely seasonal variation of heat wave impacts. We explain why infrared heating (which typically increases VPD) is an appropriate technique for heat wave simulation. Finally, we advocate experiments to take into account the smaller nighttime compared with daytime temperature increases observed during heat waves, and the precipitation deficits before and during heat waves. 相似文献

The amplification of complete mitochondrial genomes by long PCR (polymerase chain reaction) has been a major contribution to the large‐scale sequencing of arthropodan mitochondrial genomes. In this work, we designed six conserved long‐PCR primers to successfully recover the entire mitochondrial genome of the horn fly Haematobia irritans (Diptera: Muscidae) in two overlapping fragments. The conservation and versatility of these primers were tested for 17 other species from four major insect orders: Diptera (14), Coleoptera (1), Lepidoptera (1) and Hymenoptera (1). The amplification of complete mitochondrial genomes in orders other than Diptera suggested an even broader application of these primers, especially within the Hexapoda. 相似文献
