We evaluated the impact of light-scattering effects on spatial resolution in different shortwave infrared (SWIR) sub-regions by analyzing two SWIR emissive phantoms made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) composite covered with mice skin, or capillary tubes filled with Au NCs or IRDye 800CW at different depth in intralipids and finally, after administration of the Au NCs intravenously in mice. Our findings highlighted the benefit of working at the highest tested spectral range of the SWIR region with a 50% enhancement of spatial resolution measured in artificial model when moving from NIR-II (1000-1300 nm) to NIR-IIa (1300-1450 nm) region, and a 25% reduction of the scattering from the skin determined by point spread function analysis from the NIR-II to NIR-IIb region (1500-1700 nm). We also confirmed that a series of Monte Carlo restoration of images significantly improved the spatial resolution in vivo in mice in deep tissues both in the NIR-II and NIR-IIa spectral windows.  相似文献

An average cystic fibrosis (CF) carrier frequency of 1 in 25 in Europe is cited in numerous reports, although a great variability in estimated prevalences has been found in different European populations. The estimates of these frequencies were based on numbers of CF patients before identification of the gene in 1989. Here we report the results of a study to determine the carrier frequency of the ΔF508 mutation in The Netherlands by analyzing mouthwashes and matched blood samples from 11 654 blood donors all over the country. We analyzed possible relationships between a number of theoretically explanatory variables and the ΔF508 carrier frequency by means of univariate and multivariate logistic regression. These variables were: distance of the blood banks from the northeastern part of the country (distance); whether the blood donors knew that we were looking for a CF mutation; sex and age of the donor; and number of children of the donor (family size). We detected a ΔF508 carrier frequency of 1 in 42 (95% CI 1/37–1/47) in The Netherlands. If we assume that the relative frequency of the ΔF508 mutation among carriers and patients is comparable in The Netherlands, this gives an estimated overall CF carrier frequency of 1 in 32 (95% CI 1/28–1/36), significantly less than 1 in 25. The univariate logistic regression analysis of the effects of the explanatory variables on the carrier frequency revealed no significant relationships, except for an increase in carrier frequency with increasing distance from the northeastern region. In the multivariate analysis with all five independent variables, distance, age and family size were significantly related to the carrier frequency, but sex and CF information were not. There was a significant interaction between age and family size. In our final model, distance, age and family size were positively related to the carrier frequency, while the interaction of age with family size showed a negative relation. These results confirm that there is a gradient in gene frequency with low frequencies in the northeastern part of the country and high frequencies in the southern part. They also suggest a relation of age and family size with carrier frequency. This relation, however, is too complex to be explained by heterozygote advantage. Received: 10 May 1996  相似文献

This report summarizes the outcomes of an IndiSeas workshop aimed at using ecosystem indicators to evaluate the status of the world??s exploited marine ecosystems in support of an ecosystem approach to fisheries, and global policy drivers such as the 2020 targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Key issues covered relate to the selection and integration of multi-disciplinary indicators, including climate, biodiversity and human dimension indicators, and to the development of data- and model-based methods to test the performance of ecosystem indicators in providing support for fisheries management. To enhance the robustness of our cross-system comparison, unprecedented effort was put in gathering regional experts from developed and developing countries, working together on multi-institutional survey datasets, and using the most up-to-date ecosystem models.  相似文献

Reduction of oscillations in population size is of fundamental importance to both theoretical and applied ecology. Spatial variability in population rates among different habitat regions is known to be an important mechanism that inhibits oscillations in population size. In the current study we used an individual-based model to simulate a single population of animals whose individual members are sensitive to competition only within their vicinity (i.e., within their competition neighborhood, CN). Our model extends previous studies by exploring how local interactions reduce population oscillations in competitive systems of animals, rather than in systems of plants. Our simulations explored the effects of animal mobility and interaction range separately on population dynamics. In our model, a decrease in CN dimensions tended to reduce population oscillations at all tested animal movement speeds. Yet, movement speed affected animal distribution patterns; an increase in movement speed led to more random distributions. We also found that mean population size was affected more by CN dimensions at lower mobility levels than when it was high.  相似文献

Within affluent societies, people who grow up in deprived areas begin reproduction much earlier than their affluent peers, and they display a number of other behaviors adapted to an environment in which life will be short. The psychological mechanisms regulating life-history strategies may be sensitive to the age profile of the people encountered during everyday activities. We hypothesized that this age profile might differ between environments of different socioeconomic composition. We tested this hypothesis with a simple observational study comparing the estimated age distribution of people using the streets in an affluent and a socioeconomically deprived neighborhood which were closely matched in other ways. We were also able to use the UK census to compare the age profile of observed street users with the actual age profile of the community. We found that people over 60?years of age were strikingly less often observed on the street in the deprived than in the affluent neighborhood, whereas young adults were observed more often. These differences were not reflections of the different age profiles of people who lived there, but rather of differences in which residents use the streets. The way people use the streets varies with age in different ways in the affluent and the deprived neighborhoods. We argue that chronic exposure to a world where there are many visible young adults and few visible old ones may activate psychological mechanisms that produce fast life-history strategies.  相似文献

The content of sialic acid bound to the sinusoidal region of plasma membrane during the prereplicative phase after the intravenous injection of a solution containing triiodothyronine, amino acids, glucagon and heparin (T.A.G.H. solution) has been measured. The results obtained show that an important decrease in sialic acid content is produced as it occurs in the hepatic cells of hepatectomized animals. In order to know if sialidase activity is involved in the decrease of sialic acid content during liver regeneration, the activity of sinusoidal plasma membrane sialidases during the prereplicative phase after the partial hepatectomy has been studied. No modifications of sialidase activity were detected during this period of time indicating that this decrease in sialic acid content has to be produced by other mechanisms such as diminution in the synthesis of precursor molecules. On the other hand due to the importance of Ca2+-calmodulin complexes in the activation of the hepatic cell proliferation the possible implication of this complex on the loss of sialic acid, observing the effect of trifluoperazine (inhibitor of Ca2+-calmodulin complexes) during the prereplicative phase of liver regeneration has been studied. The results show a delay in the decrease of the amount of sugar studied from 10 to 12 hours compared to the results obtained with the hepatectomized rats that have not received trifluoperazine.  相似文献

With a dense N2-CH4 atmosphere rich in organics, both in gas and aerosol phases, and with the possible presence of hydrocarbons oceans on its surface, Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn, appears as a natural laboratory to study chemical evolution toward complex organic systems, in a planetary environment and over a long time scale. Thanks to many analogies with planet Earth, it provides a unique way to look at the various physical and chemical processes, and their couplings which may have been involved in terrestrial prebiotic chemistry. Indeed, analogies with the Earth have a limit since Titan's temperatures are much lower than on the Earth and since liquid water is totally absent. However, from that aspect, Titan also serves as a reference laboratory worth studying — indirectly — the role of liquid water in exobiology. The Cassini-Huygens mission currently developed by NASA and ESA will send an orbiter around Saturn and Titan and a probe in Titan's atmosphere. This mission which will be launched in 1997 for an expected arrival in 2004, offers a unique opportunity to study in detail extra-terrestrial, not life-controled, organic processes, and consequently it will have significant implications in the fields of exobiology and the origins of life.This paper is dedicated to the memory of Cyril PONNAMPERUMA who largely contributed to the development of the scientific fields of Chemical Evolution and Exobiology.  相似文献

Although lesbian women have a variety of ways to become mothers, an increasing number of lesbian couples attend fertility centres asking for donor insemination. The practice of inseminating lesbian couples remains a controversial topic within the reproductive medicine world. A review of the literature did not reveal harmful effects of lesbian motherhood on child development. Furthermore, this treatment is highly effective with an expected cumulative pregnancy rate of 60% after three intra-uterine inseminations with superovulation using clomifene citrate. The only objection to medically assisted procreation in these couples is therefore purely ethical. The extensive experience of the AZ-VUB Centre for Reproductive Medicine that played a pioneer role in this field, is illustrated in this article.  相似文献
