Introduction
Root-mediated changes in soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, termed rhizosphere priming effects (RPE), play crucial roles in the global carbon (C) cycle, but their mechanisms and field relevance remain ambiguous. We hypothesize that nitrogen (N) shortages may intensify SOM decomposition in the rhizosphere because of increase of fine roots and rhizodeposition.Methods
RPE and their dependence on N-fertilization were studied using a C3-to-C4 vegetation change. N-fertilized and unfertilized soil cores, with and without maize, were incubated in the field for 50 days. Soil CO2 efflux was measured, partitioned for SOM- and root-derived CO2, and RPE was calculated. Plant biomass, microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN), and enzyme activities (β-1,4-glucosidase; N-acetylglucosaminidase; L-leucine aminopeptidase) were analyzed.Results
Roots enhanced SOM mineralization by 35 % and 126 % with and without N, respectively. This was accompanied by higher specific root-derived CO2 in unfertilized soils. MBC, MBN and enzyme activities increased in planted soils, indicating microbial activation, causing positive RPE. N-fertilization had minor effects on MBC and MBN, but it reduced β-1,4-glucosidase and L-leucine aminopeptidase activities under maize through lower root-exudation. In contrast, N-acetylglucosaminidase activity increased with N-fertilization in planted and unplanted soils.Conclusions
This study showed the field relevance of RPE and confirmed that, despite higher root biomass, N availability reduces RPE by lowering root and microbial activity.22.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory marker, which at low-level elevations is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Although CRP has been extensively investigated in North American and European settings, few studies have measured CRP among non-Western groups. The present study used dried whole blood spot samples to examine high-sensitivity CRP concentrations among the Yakut (Sakha) of Siberia (85 females, 56 males; 18-58 years old). Our goals were: (1) to compare Yakut CRP concentrations with other populations; (2) to investigate sex differences; and (3) to explore anthropometric correlates of CRP. Results indicate that serum equivalent CRP concentrations are similar to those from industrializing nations, lower than US and European values, and greater than Japanese concentrations. Yakut men and women display similar CRP concentrations; however, CRP was significantly higher among men after adjustment for body fat, age, and smoking. The cardiovascular system operates under a wide scale of demands, ranging from conditions of rest to extreme stress. How the heart muscle matches rates of ATP production with utilization is an area of active investigation. ATP-sensitive potassium (K(ATP)) channels serve a critical role in the orchestration of myocardial energetic well-being. K(ATP) channel heteromultimers consist of inwardly-rectifying K(+) channel 6.2 and ATP-binding cassette sulfonylurea receptor 2A that translates local ATP/ADP levels, set by ATPases and phosphotransfer reactions, to the channel pore function. In cells in which the mobility of metabolites between intracellular microdomains is limited, coupling of phosphotransfer pathways with K(ATP) channels permits a high-fidelity transduction of nucleotide fluxes into changes in membrane excitability, matching energy demands with metabolic resources. This K(ATP) channel-dependent optimization of cardiac action potential duration preserves cellular energy balance at varying workloads. Mutations of K(ATP) channels result in disruption of the nucleotide signaling network and generate a stress-vulnerable phenotype with excessive susceptibility to injury, development of cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmia. Solving the mechanisms underlying the integration of K(ATP) channels into the cellular energy network will advance the understanding of endogenous cardioprotection and the development of strategies for the management of cardiovascular injury and disease progression. 相似文献

The molecule of photoreceptor Ca(2+)-binding protein recoverin contains four potential Ca(2+)-binding sites of the EF-hand type, but only two of them (the second and the third) can actually bind calcium ions. We studied the interaction of Ca2+ with recoverin and its mutant forms containing point amino acid substitutions at the working Ca(2+)-binding sites by measuring the intrinsic protein fluorescence and found that the substitution of Gln for Glu residues chelating Ca2+ in one (the second or the third) or simultaneously in both (the second and the third) Ca(2+)-binding sites changes the affinity of the protein to Ca2+ ions in different ways. The Gln for Glu121 substitution in the third site and the simultaneous Gln substitutions in the second (for Glu85) and in the third (for Glu121) sites result in the complete loss of the capability of recoverin for a strong binding of Ca(2+)-ions. On the other hand, the Gln for Glu85 substitution only in the second site moderately affects its affinity to the cation. Hence, we assumed that recoverin successively binds Ca(2+)-ions: the second site is filled with the cation only after the third site has been filled. The binding constants for the third and the second Ca(2+)-binding sites of recoverin determined by spectrofluorimetric titration are 3.7 x 10(6) and 3.1 x 10(5) M-1, respectively. 相似文献

The method of the cultivation of M .tuberculosis in cell subcultures was tested. Five consecutive passages of 2 M. tuberculosis strains were carried out with similar inoculation and cultivation conditions. Mycobacterial cells preserved their morphological characteristics in the course of all passages. Millimeter wave treatment (MMWT) is widely used in Eastern European countries, but is virtually unknown in Western medicine. Among reported MMWT effects is suppression of tumor growth. The main aim of the present "blind" and dosimetrically controlled experiments was to evaluate quantitatively the ability of MMWT to influence tumor growth and to assess whether endogenous opioids are involved. The murine experimental model of B16 F10 melanoma subcutaneous growth was used. MMWT characteristics were: frequency, 61.22 GHz; average incident power density, 13.3 x 10(-3) W/cm2; single exposure duration, 15 min; and exposure area, nose. Naloxone (1 mg/kg, intraperitoneally, 30 min prior to MMWT) was used as a nonspecific blocker of opioid receptors. Five daily MMW exposures, if applied starting at the fifth day following B16 melanoma cell injection, suppressed subcutaneous tumor growth. Pretreatment with naloxone completely abolished the MMWT-induced suppression of melanoma growth. The same course of 5 MMW treatments, if started on day 1 or day 10 following tumor inoculations, was ineffective. We concluded that MMWT has an anticancer therapeutic potential and that endogenous opioids are involved in MMWT-induced suppression of melanoma growth in mice. Polymorphism of neurons in the basic fields of the forebrain striatum of birds was described using specially developed classification of neurons in Nissl preparations. Birds with different degrees of development of elementary rational activity were studied: Corvus monedula, Columba livia, Coturnix coturnix, and Melopsittacus undulatus. According to the proposed method, the neurons were classified in 3 basic types and 2 additional, 6 subtypes and 26 classes. It was found that in the higher brain regions of Corvus monedula, birds with advanced rational activity, there are a greater variety and number of complex associative stellate cells than in birds with poorly developed rational activity (Columba livia and Coturnix coturnix). 相似文献
