Concept of separation of stages coupled with novel design of reciprocating jet bioreactor have been incorporated in this research for the development of high efficiency treatment system for contaminated wastewaters.Evaluation of pilot plant data reveals that a three stage reciprocating jet bioreactor system could be effectively employed for nitrification and denitrification of highly polluted wastewater obtained from Berlin wastewater treatment plant. Such a system with COD destruction stage (residence time 1–3 hours) followed by nitrification stage (residence time 3–4.5 hours) and denitrification stage (residence time 0.3 hours) gives COD destruction rate upto 58 kg COD/(m3 day), nitrification rate upto 3.2 NH 4 + -N/(m3 day) and denitrification rate upto 28 kg NO 3 -N/(m3 day) while providing COD, NH 4 + -N and NO 3 -N conversion of more than 90%.Nitrification and denitrification of wastewater at such a short residence time is possible mainly due to the employment of reciprocating jet bioreactor system.Paper presented at the Third Joint Schlesinger Seminar on Transport phenomena and processes in biological systems, Technion — Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel, May 8–9, 1990  相似文献

An optical averaging of rat liver ribosome small subunit images revealed seven strands with a mean diameter of about 50 Å. A tentative model of the 3D arrangement of the strands is suggested. An assumption is made that these strands are clusters of protein molecules arranged on the double-helical regions of RNA.  相似文献

In the present work a linear model for a pair of antogonistic muscles is analysed. Each constituent muscle in this model is identical to ones considered previously (Stein and Ouztöreli, 1976). Analytical properties of the antagonistic muscles and dynamics of the system are described and some numerical results are discussed. The natural modes of the system are determined by a fourth order polynomial, which most commonly has one pair of conjugate complex roots and two negative real roots. In a recent work (Ouztöreli, 1980) a mathematical model for studying the neural activities in a vertebrate retina has been investigated, where the basic network contains five interconnected neurons: a receptor cell, a bipolar cell, a horizontal cell, an amacrine cell, and a retinal ganglion cell. More recently, in (Ouztöreli and O'Mara, 1980) the basic network has been extended to a larger network containing twelve neurons. In both of these works, the performances of the basic and extended models were discussed under different structural and processing conditions with constant inputs by using the results of one of our earlier work (Ouztöreli, 1979). In the present paper we investigate by simulations the responses of the basic retinal network to piecewise constant and periodic inputs. Two types of slow excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) with different properties were found in neurons of the rabbit superior cervical sympathetic ganglion. In our group of neurons slow EPSPs increased during artificial hyperpolarization and decreased during depolarization of the membrane. The input resistance of the cells fell or remained unchanged during the development of slow EPSPs. In the second group of cells slow EPSPs increased during depolarization and decreased during hyperpolarization. The reversal potential of these responses, determined by extrapolation, was –78.9±3.6 mV. Depolarization responses to activation of muscarinic cholinergic receptors by acetylcholine or carbachol developed in 53% of neurons with an increase in input resistance and had a reversal potential of –83.2±6.7 mV. It is suggested that in cells of the first group the ionic mechanism of the slow EPSPs is similar to that of the fast EPSPs, whereas in cells of the second group its main component is a decrease in the potassium conductance of the membrane.A. The precipitation of lipid-protein complexes from the baker's yeast protein globulin fraction by polysaccharides (gum arabic and arabinogalactan) was investigated. Lipid-protein complexes were precipitated more readily with the polysaccharides under study than with other globulin fractions components. A method for the removal of lipids from the globulin fraction of baker's yeast by precipitation of the lipid-protein complexes with polysaccharides is suggested.  相似文献

A single-gene nuclear choline-requiring mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was studied. Choline as a growth supplement to synthetic media could be substituted by low concentrations of dimethylethanolamine, monomethylethanolamine or ethanolamine. DL-Serine also supported growth, but only at high concentrations: on a molar basis it was approximately one hundred times less effective than choline. When cultured in unsupplemented medium the mutant cells soon ceased to grow. The growth-arrested cells contained less than one fifth of the phosphatidylethanolamine present in wild-type cells and only traces of phosphatidylserine. The relative content of the two phospholipid species was raised by growing the mutant cells in the presence of choline of the other supplements but still remained lower than in wild-type cells. The mutant cells depleted of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine had greatly diminished ability to fuse with other cells in mating and their protoplasts showed increased resistance to hypotonic lysis. Respiration was not substantially affected by the deficit of the two phospholipid species in the mutant. In cell-free preparations, the affinity of the phosphatidylserine synthesizing system for serine was found to be almost two orders of magnitude lower in the mutant than in the wild-type. The impairment of phosphatidylserine synthesis accounts for growth requirement and the abnormal phospholipid composition of the mutant cells.  相似文献

13C-N.m.r. spectra of all possible 1,6:2,3- and 1,6:3,4-dianhydro-β-D-hexo-pyranoses and their O-acetyl and deoxy derivatives are presented. Relations between chemical shifts of certain carbon atoms and the structure of the dianhydrides are outlined, and their application in structural analysis is discussed. Inversion of configuration of the oxirane ring from the endo to the exo position is associated with typical upfield-shifts for oxirane-ring carbon atoms C-2 or C-4, respectively. Possible inter-relationships between 13C-chemical shifts and steric and polar interactions in the dianhydro derivatives are discussed.  相似文献
