In this study, we tested the hypothesis that elevated [CO2] shortens the cell cycle in meristems of Dactylis glomerata, more in a Portuguese population (38°53′N) than in a Swedish population (63°09′N). In the shoot meristem, the cell cycle shortened to about the same extent (~ 26%) in both populations exposed to the elevated [CO2] treatment. In the root meristem, the cell cycle shortened by 17% in the Portuguese and by 8% in the Swedish population. However, the proportion of rapidly cycling cells increased in the Portuguese much more than in the Swedish population in both meristems. In the root meristem, there was a 1.86-fold increase in the Portuguese compared with a 1.31-fold increase in the Swedish. In the shoot meristem, the increases were 1.5–3-fold for the Portuguese and 1.2-fold for the Swedish. The data are consistent in showing that a major response to the elevated [CO2] treatment was an increase in the proportion of cells that were cycling and that this was more marked for the Portuguese population. A more general response to the elevated [CO2] treatment was a shortening of the cell cycle regardless of population.  相似文献

Hyperbenthic harpacticoid samples from Japanese hydrothermal vents in the Okinawa Trough and cold seep sites in Sagami Bay were examined and resulted in the discovery of four new species belonging to three new genera of Aegisthidae (Copepoda: Harpacticoida). Females of Nudivorax todai gen. et sp. nov. possess a large area of flexible integument between the cephalosome and the first pedigerous somite which is suggestive of a gorging feeding strategy. Main diagnostic characters separating the new genus from other Aegisthidae are provided by the unusually short caudal rami, the complete lack of intcgumcntal surface lamellae, and the presence in the male of a linear array of pores along the rostral margin which appears to be sensory in function. Scabrantenna yooi gen. et sp. nov. displays several similarities with Aegisthus aculeatus Giesbrecht, 1891 but is highly distinctive in its male morphology which includes extremely atrophied mouthparts and a unique prehensile antenna. Jamstecia terazakii gen. et sp. nov. is only known from a single female caught in the Okinawa Trough. Jamstecia gen. nov. is most closely related to Andromastax Conroy-Dalton & Huys, 1999 but can be distinguished on the basis of the elongate antennules, the antennary morphology, the absence of lateral spinous processes on the cephalosome and swimming legs 2–4, and differences in the mandibular palp and armature of the maxilliped. Andromastax cephaloceratus sp. nov. differs from the type species A. muricatus Conroy-Dalton & Huys, 1998 primarily in the presence of long spinous processes on the cephalosome and the absence of the inner seta on the female P5.  相似文献

Three metabolic inhibitors, mycostatin, concanavalin A (Con A) and cytochalasin B (CB) were used to study the interactions between l-methyladenine (1-MA) and the starfish oocyte surface leading to germinal vesicle breakdown (GVB). Mycostatin and Con A had no obvious effects on GVB. CB did not inhibit, but did delay GVB. This delaying effect was interpreted as having multiple 1-MA reactive "sites" on the surface. The results also suggested that not all of them were needed to react with 1-MA to bring about GVB.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The life cycles of 2 strains of Allogromia laticollaris (CSH and TPA) raised on experimentally restricted diets have been studied. Cloned cultures of the strains differed in nutritional requirements for continuous reproduction. The TPA strain was more fecund. Both strains have a basically apogamic (asexual) life cycle; only occasionally were gamonts (sexually reproducing individuals) produced. They were autogamous (self-fertilizing) and fusion of the gametes took place within the parental test.
We found in CSH clones a regular alternation of vesicularly nucleated and compactly multinucleated diploid generations. The details of the life cycle of either strain are not known well enough to be able to construct life cycle diagrams more meaningful than that of Arnold. The 2 strains studied differ in cytologic and nuclear detail from each other and from the strain studied by Arnold.  相似文献

Seeds or fruits of 10 weed species were collected in each of 3 years and mixed with the top 7·5 cm of sterilised soil which was confined in cylinders sunk in the ground outdoors and cultivated three times yearly. The numbers of seedlings emerging were recorded for 5 yr and the numbers of viable seeds remaining then determined. Few, if any, seedlings of Atriplex, Chenopodium or Polygonum spp. emerged in the autumn of sowing; the main emergence was consistently in March–May (A. hastata, A. patula), April–May (P. lapathifolium, P. persicaria), April–June (C. polyspermum), May–June (C. rubrum) or June–August (C. hybridum). When sown before November, some seedlings of Rumex crispus, R. obtusifolius and R. sanguineus appeared immediately. Most emerged in April in subsequent years. Seedling emergence was usually greatest in the first year; thereafter, with all species, seedling numbers decreased approximately exponentially from year to year. The mean numbers of seeds found to be viable after 5 yr ranged from 2·5% (R. sanguineus) to 16·6% (C. rubrum) of those sown.  相似文献

An electron microscopic study of internal and surface-connectedmembrane systems of leg muscle of the crab shows that thereare three kinds of surface-connected membrane systems in additionto an intracellular sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). One is a systemof large infoldings of the sarcolemma referred to as clefts.These are longitudinally-oriented, flattened infoldings of boththe plasma membrane and the fibrous sheath of the fiber, andwere probably seen earlier with the light microscope. Extendinginto the fiber both from these clefts and from the free fibersurface are two systems of tubules of much smaller caliber,the Z tubules and the A tubules. The Z tubules are located,as their name indicates, near the Z lines of the myofibrils,and are thought to be attached to them mechanically. The A tubulesare found in pairs, near the ends of each A band, and are closelybound to the SR in two-part structures called dyads. Local-activationexperiments, like those done earlier by Huxley and Taylor, suggestthat the A tubules are involved in excitation-contraction coupling;no such experimental suggestion of function exists for the Ztubules.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle and sexuality of the green mussel Pernaviridis (L.) in Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, were investigatedfrom July 1982 to May 1984. Histological studies showed thatthe cyde could be divided into 4 stages occurring in a highlyseasonal pattern. The very low (<0.1%) occurrence of functionalhermaphrodites indicates that P. viridis is gonochoristic. Pastreports of protandric rhythmic hermaphroditism may have resultedfrom reliance on fluctuations in sex ratio and sex identificationby gonad colour. These criteria are, however, considered invalidfor P. viridis because differences exist between the developmentalpatterns of the male and female gonads and, further, colourof the female gonad at the early proliferation stage resemblesthe male. Temperature was found to correlate positively withgonad development and with the lower threshold at 24°C.Temperature was not, however, limiting at some sites in HongKong. A joint Principal Component Analysis-Stepwise multipleregression procedure suggested that hypertrophication mightinhibit gonadal development in Victoria Harbour (Received 2 November 1987; accepted 30 December 1987)  相似文献
