The stability of DPIP-Hill activity of membrane fragments fromblue-green algae was investigated in various suspension media.Two blue-green algae, Anabaena cylindrica and A. variabiliswere used. Activities for the DPIP-Hill reaction were stable in the twoalgal preparations only when preparations were suspended ina medium containing high concentrations of carbohydrates orPEG. Required concentrations of carbohydrates or PEG differedgready in die two preparations; 1.5 M sucrose or 20% PEG forA. cylindrica and 0.3 M sucrose or 6% PEG for A. variabiliswere minimal for maintaining full activity in 2 hr incubationat 0°C, respectively. Below these concentrations, activitiesdecreased rapidly. In both preparations, stabilizing effects,on a molar basis, varied in different kinds of solutes. However,a simple relation was found between the effects and water concentrationsof media. In A. cylindrica, a 50% decay in activity occurredin 2 hr incubation at 0°G in a medium with 43.8 M water,and, in A. variabilis, the water concentration was 53.4 M. In media free of carbohydrate or PEG, Mg++ ion had a moderatestabilizing ability. EDTA acted antagonistically to Mg++. Effectiveconcentrations were the same in two preparations. However, inthe medium containing carbohydrate or PEG, their actions wereinsignificant. Results suggest that the molecular organization in membranesnecessary for Hill reaction is easily destroyed under high waterconcentrations, and that added solutes stabilize the activityby reducing water concentrations. Sugar-free egg albumin solution was 'force fed' to female C.pipiens pallens Coquillett, by first stimulating their labella briefly with 1.0 M sucrose, so that they then took the protein meal into the crop. Abstract Flower-visiting insects, the distribution of pollen on an insect's body, and fruit and seed sets of Primula sieboldiiE. Morren were investigated in a maritime deciduous forest habitat of the Hidaka region in Hokkaido. Queens of Bombus diversus tersatus Smith (Hymenoptera: Apidae), Bombus schrencki albidopleuralis Skorikov, and Bombus deuteronymus deuteronymus Schulz were observed to visit the flowers of the species. Bumblebee claw marks were found on the flower petals of 68% of the flowering ramets of the species. Scanning-electronmicroscopy revealed that pin and thrum pollens of P. sieboldii were deposited in different positions along the proboscis of a B. diversus tersatus queen (n=38400 grains). On the glossa, all the observed pollen was of the pin type, while more than half of the pollen grains observed on the upper part of the proboscis, galea, stipes, and maxillary palpus were of the thrum type. In the field, high fruit and seed sets were recorded for both pin and thrum morphs, indicating the occurrence of sufficient legitimate pollination during the flowering season. In addition to the effectiveness of queen bumblebees as pollinators for P. sieboldii suggested in this study, phenological and morphological matches, i.e., early spring flowering during the queen bee emergence season and the similar lengths of the corolla tube and the bee proboscis, also support the inference that queen bumble bees play an important role in legitimate pollination of P. sieboldii.  相似文献

Early in the germination of peas, ascorbate Oxidase activity increased markedly in the root and epicotyl, but not in the cotyledons. The activity in the root was suppressed by the administration of 6-methylpurine, thiouracil, cyclohexi-mide, thioproline, and phenylthiourea. Although enzyme development was inhibited by phenylthiourea and thioproline, root elongation was not affected by these reagents. As germination progressed, the ascorbate oxidase activity in the extract of the seedling's root could be separated into at least 3 to 7 isoenzymes.  相似文献

Abstract To elucidate the effects of herbivory by chrysomelid beetles on Rumex japonicus, rosette leaves were clipped and the subsequent fruit production and root growth were observed. The increase of leaf biomass of some clipped plants was greater than that of control plants, although this varied among individual plants. The root growth of clipped plants was less than that of control plants. Fruit production increased with plant size, and there was no difference in fruit production between clipped and control plants. Reproductive allocation (fruit biomass, relative to fruit biomass plus root growth) increased with plant size; it was greater in clipped plants than in control ones. Based on these results, reproductive allocation strategy against herbivory was discussed.  相似文献
