BACKGROUND: Quality is central to understanding provider motivations to join and remain within a social franchising network. Quality also appears as a key issue from the client's perspective, and may influence why a client chooses to use a franchised provider over another type of provider. The dynamic relationships between providers of social franchising clinics and clients who use these services have not been thoroughly investigated in the context of Myanmar, which has an established social franchising network. This study examines client motivations to use a Sun Quality Health network provider and provider motivations to join and remain in the Sun Quality Health network. Taken together, these two aims provide an opportunity to explore the symbiotic relationship between client satisfaction and provider incentives to increase the utilization of reproductive health care services. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Results from a series of focus group discussions with clients of reproductive health services and franchised providers shows that women chose health services provided by franchised private sector general practitioners because of its perceived higher quality, associated with the availability of effective, affordable, drugs. A key finding of the study is associated with providers. Provider focus group discussions indicate that a principle determinate for joining and remaining in the Sun Quality Health Network was serving the poor.  相似文献

Variation in exposure to sex hormones during early development contributes to phenotypic plasticity in vertebrate offspring. As a proposed marker for prenatal sex hormone exposure and because of their association with various physiological and behavioral characteristics, digit ratio and/or digit length have received notable interest within the field of evolutionary ecology. However, the validity of digit measures as a proxy of prenatal sex hormone exposure is controversial and only few studies have provided direct evidence for the link between digit development and prenatal sex hormones. Here, we report morph- and sex-specific variation in digit ratio in wild painted dragon lizards (Ctenophorus pictus). Lizards expressing a yellow bib have significantly larger third-to-fourth toe ratios (3D:4D) than lizards without a bib. Males have significantly smaller 3D:4D than females. Furthermore, we show that experimental elevation of yolk testosterone significantly increases 3D:4D in hatchling painted dragon lizards, but has no influence on hatchling size. Our results provide direct and indirect evidence for the involvement of prenatal sex steroids in digit development and it is suggested that digit ratio may be used as a biomarker for prenatal steroid exposure in this reptilian species. As such, digit ratio may provide a useful tool to study temporal or spatial differences in the proximate hormonal mechanisms modulating physiological and behavioural phenotypes.  相似文献

对深圳马峦山地区华南紫萁占优势的植物群落进行研究,结果表明:华南紫萁群落中共有维管植物48科69属82种,种类组成具有明显的南亚热带性质;年龄结构显示群落的主要优势种属于稳定型种群,群落总体处于稳定状态;群落的频度指数规律为A>B<C>D>E,与RaunKiaer频度定律、海南岛山地雨林优势种群的频度规律等不相符合;华南紫萁种群树高和个体数百分比显示,种群高度0.3~0.7 m植株占比例较大,种群处于旺盛发展期;物种多样性指数为SP=16.42,SW=4.56,均匀度指数为E=0.33,E′=0.83,群落物种多样性指数和均匀度指数均较高,接近典型南亚热带常绿阔叶林顶极群落类型。本研究揭示了华南紫萁野外生存状态,为该种的保护和利用提供了基础资料。  相似文献

There is increasing evidence that reactive oxygen species (ROS), a group of unstable and highly reactive chemical molecules, play a key role in regulating and maintaining life-history trade-offs. Upregulation of ROS in association with immune activation is costly because it may result in an imbalance between pro- and antioxidants and, hence, oxidative damage. Previous research aimed at quantifying this cost has mostly focused on changes in the pro-/antioxidant balance subsequent to an immune response. Here, we test the hypothesis that systemic ROS may constrain immune activation. We show that systemic, pre-challenge superoxide (SO) levels are negatively related to the strength of the subsequent immune response towards the mitogen phytohaemagglutinin in male, but not female painted dragon lizards (Ctenophorus pictus). We therefore suggest that systemic SO constrains immune activation in painted dragon males. We speculate that this may be due to sex-specific selection pressures on immune investment.  相似文献

Alkylating agents chemically modify DNA and cause mutations that lead to cancer. In the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, resistance to the alkylating agent methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) is mediated in part by Dap1p (damage resistance protein 1). Dap1p is related to cytochrome b5, which activates cytochrome P450 proteins, elevating the metabolism of lipids and xenobiotic compounds. We have found that Dap1p, like cytochrome b5, binds to heme and that Dap1p targets the cytochrome P450 protein Erg11p/Cyp51p. Genetic analysis indicates that Erg11p acts downstream of Dap1p. Furthermore, Dap1p regulates the stability of Erg11p, and Erg11p is stabilized in dap1Delta cells by the addition of heme. Thus, Dap1p utilizes heme to stabilize Erg11p, which in turn regulates ergosterol synthesis and MMS resistance. Dap1p homologues have been identified in numerous eukaryotes, including mammals, suggesting that the Dap1p-cytochrome P450 protein pathway is broadly conserved in eukaryotic species.  相似文献

Condensed Y chromosomes in Rumex acetosa L. root-tip nuclei were studied using 5-azaC treatment and immunohistochemical detection of methylated histones. Although Y chromosomes were decondensed within root meristem in vivo, they became condensed and heteropycnotic in roots cultured in vitro. 5-azacytidine (5-azaC) treatment of cultured roots caused transitional dispersion of their Y chromosome bodies, but 7 days after removal of the drug from the culture medium, Y heterochromatin recondensed and again became visible. The response of Rumex sex chromatin to 5-azaC was compared with that of condensed segments of pericentromeric heterochromatin in Rhoeo spathacea (Sw.) Steam roots. It was shown that Rhoeo chromocentres, composed of AT-rich constitutive heterochromatin, did not undergo decondensation after 5-azaC treatment. The Y-bodies observed within male nuclei of R. acetosa were globally enriched with H3 histone, demethylated at lysine 4 and methylated at lysine 9. This is the first report of histone tail-modification in condensed sex chromatin in plants. Our results suggest that the interphase condensation of Y chromosomes in Rumex is facultative rather than constitutive. Furthermore, the observed response of Y-bodies to 5-azaC may result indirectly from demethylation and the subsequent altered expression of unknown genes controlling tissue-specific Y-inactivation as opposed to the global demethylation of Y-chromosome DNA.  相似文献

Short hairpin RNA (shRNA) synthesized from vector-based expression is as effective as short interfering RNA (siRNA) synthesized in vitro for suppressing the expression of their corresponding genes. Recently, three groups independently reported a new technology to construct an shRNA library from cDNA, providing great hope for genome-wide functional screens in many biological systems. In the present study, we report an alternative approach to generate shRNA from cDNA. A major improvement was to use a nicking enzyme to open up the double-stranded DNA so that the loop region remains single-stranded while the rest of the DNA fragment is double-stranded at an elevated temperature (e.g., 72 degrees C). The single-stranded DNA was then converted into double-stranded DNA by Taq DNA polymerase using the existing strand in the double-stranded region as a primer. Thus, the extended product carried a palindromic structure of 19 bp separated by a loop. Finally, the DNA fragment was cloned into a vector that carries an H1 promoter at the upstream region and ends with 5Ts, a terminator for the Pol III polymerase, at the downstream region. To prove the principle, we constructed shRNA from green fluorescent protein (GFP) cDNA and successfully suppressed GFP expression. Consequently, this simplified approach provides a better alternative to generate shRNA libraries from cDNA. Such shRNA libraries can be used to identify potential siRNA target sequences and study gene functions by a variety of selection methods.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the possible changes in serum leptin concentration caused by acute exercise and the effects of zinc deficiency on these changes. Forty male rats were divided into control-control, control-elercise, zinc-deficient-control, and zinc-deficient-exercise groups (10 rats in each). Control-exercise and zinc-deficient-exercise groups performed exercisse at 6 m/min speed on a rodent treadmill for 60 min or until exhaustion. All rats were decapitated 48h after the exercise, and blood samples were collected to determine serum leptin and zinc levels. Serum leptin levels in the zinc-deficient-control group were lower than in the control-control group. The mean exercise time of control-exercise group was significantly longer than the zinc-deficient-exercise group. We conclude that serum leptin levels significantly decrease both 48 h after strenuous exercise and in the zinc-deficient rats, and there is a further decrease in leptin levels when rats fed on a zinc-deficient diet performed exercise.  相似文献

As part of our efforts to identify potent HIV-1 protease inhibitors that are active against resistant viral strains, structural modification of the azacyclic urea (I) was undertaken by incorporating acyl groups as P1′ ligands. The extensive SAR study has yielded a series of N-acyl azacyclic ureas (II), which are highly potent against both wild-type and multiple PI-resistant viral strains.  相似文献
