For centuries, rocking has been used to promote sleep in babies or toddlers. Recent research suggested that relaxation could play a role in facilitating the transition from waking to sleep during rocking. Breathing techniques are often used to promote relaxation. However, studies investigating head motions and body rotations showed that vestibular stimulation might elicit a vestibulo-respiratory response, leading to an increase in respiration frequency. An increase in respiration frequency would not be considered to promote relaxation in the first place. On the other hand, a coordination of respiration to rhythmic vestibular stimulation has been observed. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of different movement frequencies and amplitudes on respiration frequency. Furthermore, we tested whether subjects adapt their respiration to movement frequencies below their spontaneous respiration frequency at rest, which could be beneficial for relaxation. Twenty-one healthy subjects (24–42 years, 12 males) were investigated using an actuated bed, moving along a lateral translation. Following movement frequencies were applied: +30%, +15%, -15%, and -30% of subjects’ rest respiration frequency during baseline (no movement). Furthermore, two different movement amplitudes were tested (Amplitudes: 15 cm, 7.5 cm; movement frequency: 0.3 Hz). In addition, five subjects (25–28 years, 2 males) were stimulated with their individual rest respiration frequency. Rocking movements along a lateral translation caused a vestibulo-respiratory adaptation leading to an increase in respiration frequency. The increase was independent of the applied movement frequencies or amplitudes but did not occur when stimulating with subjects’ rest respiration frequency. Furthermore, no synchronization of the respiration frequency to the movement frequency was observed. In particular, subjects did not lower their respiration frequency below their resting frequency. Hence, it was not feasible to influence respiration in a manner that might be considered beneficial for relaxation.  相似文献

Jumping spiders (Salticidae) are renowned for their exceptional vision, but this does not preclude use of other senses. Here we provide evidence that olfactory pheromones are widespread in the Spartaeinae and Lyssomaninae, two subfamilies regarded as basal clades within the Salticidae. Pheromone use by salticids was tested in a series of experiments: males were tested with the odour of conspecific females, heterospecific females, and conspecific males, and females were tested with the odour of conspecific males. With seven of the 29 species tested, we also tested males using the draglines of conspecific females (spider absent) as the odour source. Males of all species tested were attracted to the odour of conspecific females and to the odour of the draglines of conspecific females. There was no evidence of males responding to the odour of heterospecific females or conspecific males, or of females responding to the odour of conspecific males. These findings suggest that it is primarily males that respond to olfactory sex pheromones, consistent with the apparent trend within spiders of males more actively searching for females and females placing greater emphasis on mate‐choice decisions. Prior to the release of their cargoes into the vacuolar lumen, sorting endosomes mature into multivesicular bodies (MVBs) through the action of ENDOSOMAL COMPLEX REQUIRED FOR TRANSPORT (ESCRT) protein complexes. MVB-mediated sorting of high-affinity phosphate transporters (PHT1) to the vacuole limits their plasma membrane levels under phosphate-sufficient conditions, a process that allows plants to maintain phosphate homeostasis. Here, we describe ALIX, a cytosolic protein that associates with MVB by interacting with ESCRT-III subunit SNF7 and mediates PHT1;1 trafficking to the vacuole in Arabidopsis thaliana. We show that the partial loss-of-function mutant alix-1 displays reduced vacuolar degradation of PHT1;1. ALIX derivatives containing the alix-1 mutation showed reduced interaction with SNF7, providing a simple molecular explanation for impaired cargo trafficking in alix-1 mutants. In fact, the alix-1 mutation also hampered vacuolar sorting of the brassinosteroid receptor BRI1. We also show that alix-1 displays altered vacuole morphogenesis, implying a new role for ALIX proteins in vacuolar biogenesis, likely acting as part of ESCRT-III complexes. In line with a presumed broad target spectrum, the alix-1 mutation is pleiotropic, leading to reduced plant growth and late flowering, with stronger alix mutations being lethal, indicating that ALIX participates in diverse processes in plants essential for their life.  相似文献

Insulin secretion from the pancreatic β-cell is controlled by changes in membrane potential and intracellular Ca(2+). The contribution of intracellular Ca(2+) stores to this process is poorly understood. We have previously shown that β-cells of mice lacking one copy of the Annexin 7 gene (Anx7(+/-)) express reduced levels of IP(3) receptors and defects in IP(3)-dependent Ca(2+) signaling. To further elucidate the effect of the Anx7(+/-) mutation on signaling related to intracellular Ca(2+) stores in the β-cell, we measured the effects of Ca(2+) mobilizing agents on electrical activity, intracellular Ca(2+) and insulin secretion in control and mutant β-cells. We found that the muscarinic agonist carbachol and the ryanodine receptor agonists caffeine and 4-chloro-m-cresol had more potent depolarizing effects on Anx7(+/-) β-cells compared to controls. Accordingly, glucose-induced insulin secretion was augmented to a greater extent by caffeine in mutant islets. Surprisingly, ryanodine receptor-mediated Ca(2+) mobilization was not affected by the Anx7(+/-) mutation, suggesting that the mechanism underlying the observed differences in electrical and secretory responsiveness does not involve intracellular Ca(2+) stores. Our results provide evidence that both IP3 receptors and ryanodine receptors play important roles in regulating β-cell membrane potential and insulin secretion, and that the Anx7(+/-) mutation is associated with alterations in the signaling pathways related to these receptors.  相似文献

A mimicry system was investigated in which the models were ants (Formicidae) and both the mimics and the predators were jumping spiders (Salticidae). By using motionless lures in simultaneous‐presentation prey‐choice tests, how the predators respond specifically to the static appearance of ants and ant mimics was determined. These findings suggest a rarely considered adaptive trade‐off for Batesian mimics of ants. Mimicry may be advantageous when it deceives ant‐averse potential predators, but disadvantageous in encounters with ant‐eating specialists. Nine myrmecophagic (ant‐eating) species (from Africa, Asia, Australia and North America) and one araneophagic (spider‐eating) species (Portia fimbriata from Queensland) were tested with ants (five species), with myrmecomorphic (ant‐like) salticids (six species of Myrmarachne) and with non‐ant‐like prey (dipterans and ordinary salticids). The araneophagic salticid chose an ordinary salticid and chose flies significantly more often than ants. Portia fimbriata also chose the ordinary salticid and chose flies significantly more often than myrmecomorphic salticids. However, there was no significant difference in how P. fimbriata responded to ants and to myrmecomorphic salticids. The myrmecophagic salticids chose ants and chose myrmecomorphic salticids significantly more often than ordinary salticids and significantly more often than flies, but myrmecophagic salticids did not respond significantly differently to myrmecomorphic salticids and ants.  相似文献

Mating signals that increase attractiveness of males to femalescan also increase conspicuousness of the signaler to predatorsand parasites. We investigated the acoustic preference of speciesof blood-sucking flies of the genus Corethrella (Diptera: Corethrellidae),which eavesdrop on the sexual advertisement signals of túngarafrogs (Physalaemus pustulosus). Male frogs of this species facultativelyproduce 2 types of mating calls: simple (whines alone) and complex(whines and chucks). We tested the acoustic preference of theflies and their ability to locate their host when the frogsproduce simple or complex calls. The flies exhibited phonotaxisto both types of calls but were preferentially attracted tocomplex calls. We show that acoustic information alone is sufficientfor the flies' accurate localization of calling frogs. Complexcalls, however, were not approached at closer distance or withdecreased landing error (i.e., proportion of landings outsidethe target) than simple calls, suggesting that call structuredoes not influence localization performance. Female túngarafrogs and frog-eating bats (Trachops cirrhosus) also prefercomplex to simple túngara frog calls. Thus, intendedand unintended receivers with different ear morphologies exhibitthe same preference for a specific túngara frog calltype. This result is discussed in the context of the evolutionof call attractiveness in a communication network.  相似文献

A variety of food-grade organic substrates were evaluated to identify materials that could be used to support long-term anaerobic bioremediation processes in the subsurface. In this work, the rate and extent of biogas production was used as an indicator of the potential for substrate fermentation to H2 and acetate, the primary electron donors used in reductive dechlorination. The rate and extent of biogas (primarily CO2+ CH4) evolution varied widely between the different substrates. For many of the substrates, biogas generation declined to very low levels within 100 days of substrate addition. However, a few substrates including several vegetable oils and sucrose esters of fatty acid (SEFAs) did support biogas production for extended time periods. Column studies demonstrated that both soybean oil and a SEFA could support sulfate reduction, methanogenesis and reductive dechlorination of perchloroethene (PCE) to cis-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) for over 14 months. The slower degradation rate of the SEFAs could be used to control substrate degradation rate in the subsurface, increasing substrate lifetime and reducing the required reinjection frequency.  相似文献

In the unrestrained rat, the hyperphagic-like ingestion of food evoked by the sustained elevation of neuropeptide-Y (NPY) in the hypothalamus was correlated with the release and turnover of monoaminergic transmitters in this structure. A single guide tube was implanted stereotaxically in the perifornical region of the hypothalamus for localized push-pull perfusion of an artificial CSF vehicle or NPY1–36 in a concentration of 10, 50, or 100 ng/1.0 l. After the rat was fully satiated, a site reactive to NPY was perfused repeatedly at a rate of 20 l/min for 6.0 min with an interval of 6.0–12 min elapsing between each perfusion. Samples of perfusate were analyzed by HPLC with coulometric detection for DA, HVA, DOPAC, NE, MHPG, 5-HT, and 5-HIAA. Although control perfusions were without effect on feeding or monoamine activity, NPY evoked mean cumulative intakes of food of 14±2.4, 25.6±3.0 and 26.5±3.2 g in response to 10, 50, or 100 ng/l concentrations of NPY, respectively, over the 4.0–5.0 hr test interval. HPLC analyses showed that during feeding the release of both NE and DA was enhanced significantly. The turnover of both catecholamines likewise increased significantly as reflected by the elevated levels of MHPG, DOPAC and HVA. However, neither the basal efflux of 5-HT nor its turnover, as reflected by the output of 5-HIAA, was affected during feeding induced by NPY perfused in the hypothalamus. These results suggest that a sustained elevation of NPY in the hypothalamus causes a perturbation in the basal activity of NE and DA which are both implicated in the neuronal mechanism regulating normal eating behavior. Thus, these catecholamine neurotransmitters are envisaged to comprise an intermediary step in the functional role played by NPY in the hypothalamus in integrating the control of energy metabolism and caloric intake.  相似文献
