A strategy for high cell density culture of heterotrophic microalgae with inhibitory substrates

Substrate inhibition is one of the major problems preventing high cell densities of microalgae in heterotrophic culture, so the possibility of overcoming the problem by various culture techniques was examined. It was found that perfusion culture may be the most appropriate technique for high cell densities in heterotrophic culture using inhibitory substrates. An experimental example in which a hollow fibre cell recycle system (HFCRS) was employed to achieve high cell densities of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii on acetate under heterotrophic conditions of growth was demonstrated. The cell density in the HFCRS was much higher than that reported in the literature for this species.     

The Neural Basis of Responsibility Attribution in Decision-Making

Social responsibility links personal behavior with societal expectations and plays a key role in affecting an agent’s emotional state following a decision. However, the neural basis of responsibility attribution remains unclear. In two previous event-related brain potential (ERP) studies we found that personal responsibility modulated outcome evaluation in gambling tasks. Here we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study to identify particular brain regions that mediate responsibility attribution. In a context involving team cooperation, participants completed a task with their teammates and on each trial received feedback about team success and individual success sequentially. We found that brain activity differed between conditions involving team success vs. team failure. Further, different brain regions were associated with reinforcement of behavior by social praise vs. monetary reward. Specifically, right temporoparietal junction (RTPJ) was associated with social pride whereas dorsal striatum and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) were related to reinforcement of behaviors leading to personal gain. The present study provides evidence that the RTPJ is an important region for determining whether self-generated behaviors are deserving of praise in a social context.     

用薄层色谱分离提纯单半乳糖和双半乳糖双甘油酯

本文选择两种溶剂体系,用两次单向薄层层析,从小麦抗寒与不抗寒品系天然橡胶胶乳分离提纯出6种单半乳糖和双半乳糖双甘油酯。并比较了它们的疏水侧链的脂肪酸组成。小麦糖脂疏水侧链脂肪酸的不饱和指数远大于天然胶乳糖脂。抗寒品系胶乳糖脂疏水侧链脂肪酸不饱和指数大于不抗寒品系。双半乳糖双甘油酯疏水侧链脂肪酸不饱和指数均大于其单半乳糖糖脂。     

长滩果引种驯化研究

长滩果系罗汉果最佳品种。原产区分布于永福和临桂县交界400—600米山区,但不适应于低丘陵和平原地区,因而不能在低丘陵和平原地区推广。为了解决这个问题。采用了(1)选择湿润和半阴的生长环境;(2)采用适应性强的砧木;(3)促成栽培;(4)加强秋旱期的科学管理等措施并取得成功,试验结果表明长滩果产量和品质达到或略超过原产区水平。     

Velocity distribution on the membrane of a tank-treading red blood cell

The kinematics of an area-conserving tank-treading disk-shaped red blood cell membrane is studied using the stream function method suggested by Secomb and Skalak (Q. Jl Mech. appl. Math. 35, Pt 2, 233–247, 1982). Two simple area-conserving velocity fields are superimposed to satisfy the continuity condition at the curved edges of the disk. A differential equation for the trajectory of any material point of the membrane is derived. The requirement of synchrony of the cycle for all membrane points leads to an integral equation which determines a magnitude function. An approximate solution is made possible by assuming small trajectory deflections.     

云南呈贡梁王山现代花粉雨的研究

本文通过对云南呈贡梁王山5块表土分析,初步研究了主要植物花粉的百分含量与其植物覆盖率之间的数量关系,并用校正系数R值表示。按照R值的大小,分为两组:R>1属于超代表性,包括有松、桤木、马桑、蒿和部分蕨类植物;R<1属于低代表性,包括有油杉、栲和石栎、滇青冈、栎、铁仔。在分析松粉分布特征基础上,认为昆明地区西风急流对松粉的传播是主要因素。     

The SV40 TC-II(kappa B) enhanson binds ubiquitous and cell type specifically inducible nuclear proteins from lymphoid and non-lymphoid cell lines.

We have characterized the complexes resulting from the specific binding in vitro of proteins present in nuclear extracts of several lymphoid and non-lymphoid cell lines to the TC-I and TC-II sequences of the simian virus 40 (SV40) enhancer. No proteins could be detected, binding selectively to the TC-I sequence, but two proteins TC-IIA and TC-IIB were identified interacting specifically with both the TC-II/kappa B enhanson, 5'-GGAAAGTCCCC-3' (important for the activity of the SV40 enhancer in vivo), and with the related H-2Kb enhanson, 5'-TGGGGATTCCCCA-3'. The binding of these two proteins to mutated TC-II enhansons correlates with the effect of these mutations in vivo, suggesting that both proteins may be important for SV40 enhancer activity. The TC-IIA binding activity was present in nuclear extracts of mature lymphoid B cells and was increased in pre-B cell nuclear extracts by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cycloheximide treatment. Furthermore, complex formation between the TC-IIA protein and the TC-II enhanson was efficiently competed by the kappa B motif from the kappa chain enhancer, indicating that TC-IIA is the NF-kappa B factor or a closely related protein. However, in contrast to previous reports, a TC-IIA/NF-kappa B-like protein whose properties could not be distinguished from those of the TC-IIA protein present in lymphoid B cells, was found in nuclear extracts of several untreated non-lymphoid cell lines, notably of HeLa cells, but not of undifferentiated F9 embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells [F9(ND)]. The TC-IIA binding activity which was moderately increased in HeLa cell nuclear extracts by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) and/or cycloheximide treatment could be induced in nuclear extracts of F9(ND) cells by cycloheximide, but not by TPA. Moreover, the TC-IIA binding activity could be induced in cytosolic fractions from F9(ND) cells by treatment with deoxycholate, indicating that these cells contain an inhibitor protein similar to the previously described NF-kappa B inhibitor, I kappa B. The second TC-II enhanson binding protein, TC-IIB, which could be clearly distinguished from the TC-IIA/NF-kappa B-like protein, by a number of differential properties, resembles the previously described KBF1/H2TF1 protein as it binds with a higher affinity to the H-2Kb enhanson than to the TC-II/kappa B enhanson, and its pattern of methylation interference on the H-2Kb and TC-II/kappa B enhansons is identical to that reported for the KBF1/H2TF1 protein.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
