Objectives

Surfactant (SF) and partial liquid ventilation (PLV) improve gas exchange and lung mechanics in neonatal RDS. However, variations in the effects of SF and PLV with degree of lung immaturity have not been thoroughly explored.

Setting

Experimental Neonatal Respiratory Physiology Research Unit, Cruces University Hospital.

Design

Prospective, randomized study using sealed envelopes.

Subjects

36 preterm lambs were exposed (at 125 or 133-days of gestational age) by laparotomy and intubated. Catheters were placed in the jugular vein and carotid artery.

Interventions

All the lambs were assigned to one of three subgroups given: 20 mL/Kg perfluorocarbon and managed with partial liquid ventilation (PLV), surfactant (Curosurf®, 200 mg/kg) or (3) no pulmonary treatment (Controls) for 3 h.

Measurements and Main Results

Cardiovascular parameters, blood gases and pulmonary mechanics were measured. In 125-day gestation lambs, SF treatment partially improved gas exchange and lung mechanics, while PLV produced significant rapid improvements in these parameters. In 133-day lambs, treatments with SF or PLV achieved similarly good responses. Neither surfactant nor PLV significantly affected the cardiovascular parameters.

Conclusion

SF therapy response was more effective in the older gestational age group whereas the effectiveness of PLV therapy was not gestational age dependent.  相似文献

The protein family known as synucleins is composed of α-, β- and γ-synuclein. The most widely studied is the α-synuclein protein due to its participation in essential processes of the central nervous system. Neurotoxicity of this protein is related to the presence of multiplications (duplications and triplications) and point mutations in the gene sequence of the α-synuclein gene (SNCA), differential expression of its isoforms and variations in post-transductional modifications. Neurotoxicity is also related to cytoplasmic inclusions known as Lewy bodies (LBs) and Lewy neurites (LNs), which are also present in α-synucleinopathies. In general, the β-synuclein protein, codified by the SNCB gene, acts as a regulator of processes triggered by α-synuclein and its function is altered by variations in the gene sequence, while γ-synuclein, codified by the SNCG gene, seems to play a major role in certain tumoral processes.  相似文献

Osonachelus decorata nov. gen., nov. sp., is the first named chelonioid turtle from the Iberian Peninsula. This Eocene turtle was found in the marine sediments of the Vespella Marls Member (Vic-Manlleu Marls Formation, upper Bartonian) that occur in the Osona county (eastern Ebro Basin, Province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain). The area is rich in invertebrate, fish, and plant fossils but various vertebrates, including several chelonian taxa, have remained unpublished. This paper is the first dedicated to the fossil turtles of this area. Osonachelus nov. gen. is a large turtle with an impressive, massive skull revealing a specialized diet, a large and well-fenestrated shell (well ornamented dorsally and much lightened ventrally), and large paddles for high-sea locomotion. It is phylogenetically located among relatively advanced cheloniids, just basal to modern forms. Although apparent similarities in shell morphology exist with Allopleuron from the Maastrichtian of Holland, Osonachelus nov. gen. is distinct due to its masticatory apparatus, less usual among cheloniids and seemingly closer to that of the Lutetian Eochelone from Belgium. Based on the deeply concave and smooth lower jaw symphysis, its diet probably consisted of soft animals or plants rather than hard-food items. Therefore, it occupied a specialized ecological niche that is unique for the Eocene of the Iberian Peninsula.  相似文献

Although the Bothremydidae are the most abundant and diverse group of turtles in the Upper Cretaceous fauna of Europe, the record attributed to the genus Elochelys was, until now, quite scarce. However, the revision of the specimens previously attributed to this taxon and the analysis of new material from the Spanish record significantly increase our knowledge of these turtles. Evaluation of the morphological variability, affecting many characters that have been considered diagnostic until now and comparisons with other members of the node Bothremydini, allow us to amend the diagnosis of the genus Elochelys, recognising Elochelys perfecta as a valid single species and reassigning its other representative, “Elochelys” convenarum, to the new genus Iberoccitanemys.  相似文献

Albert F. de Lapparent (1905–1975), the scion of a family of famous French geologists, was a dinosaur palaeontologist. He explored many territories in Europe, Saharan Africa and Asia in search of fossils. The studies he undertook in Spain, which resulted in a dozen publications between 1955 and 1969, are an important part of his research on dinosaurs. Lapparent et al. discovered about thirty dinosaur localities, mostly of Cretaceous age, in several Spanish provinces, including Albacete, Castellón, Cuenca, Soria, Teruel and Valencia in the Iberian Range, and Lleida (or Lérida) in the Pyrenean region. In 1958, Lapparent published the discovery of dinosaur eggs in the Tremp Basin (Lleida), the first ones found in the Iberian Peninsula. His 1960 work on the dinosaurs of Galve (Teruel) was the first monograph on the subject published in Spain. In 1965, Lapparent was also the first to publish the discovery of dinosaur footprints in Spain, more specifically in the province of Valencia.  相似文献

Sirenian vertebrae and ribs have been recently discovered from two Middle Eocene localities of the Pamplona Basin, Navarre (western Pyrenees). These outcrops correspond to different lower Bartonian lithostratigraphic units: the lower part of the Pamplona Marl Formation (Uztarrotz site) and the upper part of the Ardanatz Sandstone (Ardanatz site). The former represents a deep and low-energy sea floor far away from a deltaic slope; the Ardanatz environment probably corresponds to a semi-closed deltaic bay periodically affected by catastrophic floods (i.e., fluvial hyperpycnal flows). The presence of epibiontic activity suggests that the bones were exposed for a while prior to the burial. The histological structures are well preserved except in the peripheral region, where tubular-like microstructures filled by pyrite and iron oxides probably correspond to microbial bioerosion. The major mineral component of the fossil bones is francolite (carbonate fluorapatite). In the Ardanatz samples there is evidence of secondary francolite due to the late replacement of original carbonate fluorapatite through internal fractures. The Ardanatz and Uztarrotz sirenian fossils do not show any evidence of reelaboration. They have similar sum of rare earth elements (REE) concentrations relative to the host rock, but comparatively lower than in other vertebrate fossil bones. This feature may be due to the dense compact structure of pachyosteosclerotic sirenian bones.  相似文献

Summary A simple protocol for garlic in vitro management is described. It comprises a single medium for all developmental stages and genotypes tested, and the use of immature bulbs as source of axillary buds. Although genetic variability exists among the different accessions tested, for both the multiplication rate and bulblet size, acceptable values of multiplication were reached for all the accessions, and values of bulb formation approached 100% in the shoots produced.  相似文献

The double-stranded DNA bacteriophages are good model systems to understand basic biological processes such as the macromolecular interactions that take place during the virus assembly and maturation, or the behavior of molecular motors that function during the DNA packaging process. Using cryoelectron microscopy and single-particle methodology, we have determined the structures of two phage T7 assemblies produced during its morphogenetic process, the DNA-free prohead and the mature virion. The first structure reveals a complex assembly in the interior of the capsid, which involves the scaffolding, and the core complex, which plays an important role in DNA packaging and is located in one of the phage vertices. The reconstruction of the mature virion reveals important changes in the shell, now much larger and thinner, the disappearance of the scaffolding structure, and important rearrangements of the core complex, which now protrudes the shell and interacts with the tail. Some of these changes must originate by the pressure exerted by the DNA in the interior of the head.  相似文献

Acartia spp. are the dominant copepod species in the Gironde estuary, seaward of the turbidity maximum area. Acartia bifilosa develop a large population in spring and early summer whereas Acartia tonsa appear in late summer. High values and high variability of chlorophyll a/suspended particulate matter ratio are found seaward of the turbidity maximum area. Feeding rates of A. bifilosa were measured by fluorometry. Phytoplankton ingestion was found to be highly variable, between 8 to 80% of copepod carbon body weight. Except for adult females, copepods were heavier in summer than in winter. PB ratios, estimated by the instantaneous growth rate method, varied from 0.03 d–1 to 0.14 d–1. The gut contents and P/B ratios of Acartia bifilosa were related to chl a/SPM ratio. From those data, and a few obtained for A. tonsa, it is concluded that only in summer months phytoplankton ingestion is enough to maintain secondary production.  相似文献
