To a large extent, the mutual affinities of the mammalian orders continue to puzzle systematists, even though comparative anatomy and amino acid sequencing offer a massive data base from which these relationships could potentially be adduced. In the present paper the consistency index--the number of character states less the number of characters in a data set, divided by the total number of changes in the character states on a cladogram--was used to examine the relative resolving powers of recently published morphological and molecular- sequence data. Consistency indices were calculated for previously published alpha crystallin A chain and myoglobin amino acid-sequence cladograms and for four original amino acid-sequence cladograms (alpha crystallin A, myoglobin, and alpha and beta hemoglobin); these were found to be comparable to the consistency indices of morphologically based cladograms. Qualitative comparisons between the morphologically based and molecularly based trees were also made; only moderate congruence between the two was observed. Moreover, there was a general lack of congruence between the cladograms specified by each of the four proteins. Amino acid-sequence and morphological data agreed on the placement of edentates as an early eutherian offshoot and on the grouping of hyracoids, proboscideans, and sirenians. Otherwise there was only limited congruence: morphology strongly supported the grouping of lagomorphs and rodents and the alliance of pholidotes and edentates, but sequence analyses did not. The placement of tubulidentates differed widely among proteins. Morphology indicated the close association of sirenians with proboscideans; proteins suggested a pairing of sirenians with hyracoids. Actinobacillus actinomycetemconitans OMZ 346 A and Haemophilus aphrophilus OMZ 384 A, isolated on a synthetic selective and differentiating agar, show the highly cohesive and wall adherent growth in liquid medium which is typical for all primary oral isolates of these species. From each of them a low cohesion variant, OMZ 346 F and OMZ 384 F, respectively, was obtained by selection for cells growing in suspension. Screening of Western blots of these four strains with several human sera revealed the loss of a 4000 Mr antigen in both F strains. Human antibodies bound to the 400 Mr band material on preparative Western blots of the A strains were cluted with 4M magnesium chloride. These antibodies showed no cross-reaction between the 4000 Mr material of the two closely related species.  相似文献

Enamel distribution on the upper and lower incisors ofTribosphenomys minutus (from Late Paleocene-Early Eocene of Inner Mongolia of China) is typically rodent-like, i.e., primarily confined to the anterior surface throughout these transversely compressed, evergrowing teeth. AlthoughTribosphenomys incisor enamel is differentiated into two layers, it does not possess Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB). The incisor and molar enamels are radial in type, a condition regarded as either an autapomorph or a primtive retention forTribosphenomys. Character polarities concerning enamel thickness, enamel layer number, HSB, enamel types, and functional and phylogenetic implications of the enamel structures are discussed. Overall, enamel microstructural evolution at high taxonomic levels within Glires displays considerably more homoplasy than generally appreciated. A phylogenetic definition of Rodentia is proposed.Tribosphenomys is the sister-group of a taxon here named Rodentia, and thus is not itself a member of the order, from a systematic viewpoint.  相似文献

The renal nerves contribute to hypertension in experimental models of the disease, and appear to play a role in human hypertension. Several lines of evidence indicate that both in spontaneously hypertensive rats and in deoxycorticosterone acetate--NaCl rats, the full development of hypertension is dependent on renal efferent nerves and their induction of excess sodium retention. Renal sensory (afferent nerve) feedback to the central nervous system does not contribute to either of these forms of hypertension. In contrast, renovascular hypertension in rats and aortic coarctation hypertension in dogs are mediated, at least in part, by overactivity of renal afferent nerves and a resultant increase in systemic sympathetic nervous system activity. These forms of hypertension are not associated with sodium retention, and selective sensory denervation of renal afferent nerves by dorsal rhizotomy and total renal denervation result in similar reductions in hypertension. Surprisingly, the renal nerves do not contribute to dietary NaCl exacerbated hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rat, dietary NaCl-induced hypertension in the Dahl NaCl-sensitive rat, or the chronic hypertensive and nephrotoxic effects of cyclosporine A therapy in the rat, despite the finding that in all three forms of hypertension, overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system is prominent. Clinical studies indicate that the renal afferent and efferent nerves contribute to hypertension of different etiologies. Together these data point to the complex role that the renal nerves likely play in human essential hypertension.  相似文献

The occurrence of sialic acids in the free-living nematode Panagrellus redivivus was studied by periodate oxidation/[3H]sodium borohydride reduction of about 10(7) nematodes. In parallel, the capability of sialic acid biosynthesis was examined by metabolic labeling of the same number of nematodes with N-[3H]acetylmannosamine. In both experiments, radioactivity was incorporated into the nematodes. Mild acid hydrolysis, however, did not release radioactively labeled sialic acids or derivatives as tested by radio thin-layer chromatography, suggesting that P. redivivus does not contain or synthesize sialic acids.  相似文献

Ruthenium red stained a capsule external to the exine of the Azotobacter cyst. The central body is therefore surrounded by three layers, the intine, the exine, and the capsule, all containing acid mucopolysaccharide. Vesicles that appear to originate from the contracting cell membrane of the central body may account for the lipid content of the intine. The exine is composed of laminated sheets that tend to fragment into hexagonal pieces.  相似文献
