A comprehensive antioxidative mechanism was found in the freshwater dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense Lemm. during the spring bloom in Lake Kinneret. Ascorbate was present throughout the bloom period and was responsible, together with catalase, for the elimination of photosynthetically produced H2O2. As glutathione concentrations and ascorbate regenerative enzymes were negligible during mid-spring, ascorbate was presumably biosynthesized during the photosynthetically active period. Antioxidative activity increased overall at the end of the spring in conjunction with elevated ambient stress conditions, for example high light. Under such circumstances, ascorbate was regenerated. Ascorbate levels doubled when cells were exposed to an increase in irradiance from 60 to 600 μmol photons·m?2·s?1, and on addition of H2O2, concentrations increased a further 20-fold. Significant antioxidative activity was also noted in the dark, although this was dependent on the presence of H2O2. Diurnal changes in antioxidants and their regenerative enzymes were observed. The activities of mono-dehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione reductase, and ascorbate concentrations showed ultraradian periodicity and were completely in phase throughout the day/night period. Dehydroascorbate reductase activity and glutathione concentrations were also in phase but showed aperiodic variation, as did ascorbate peroxidase activity. Superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were generally out of phase during the 24-h period but did show ultraradian periodicity. Lake samples entrained under constant light revealed an inate 12-h rhythm for catalase activity, during at least 36 h.  相似文献

In some poeciliid fishes, variation in male size is accompanied by differences in mating behavior. Large males are preferred by females and perform courtship displays followed by copulatory thrusts, whereas small males perform copulatory thrusts with few or no displays. This phenomenon has been described in only a few genera and little is known about mating behavior in other poeciliids. Although Phallichthys quadripunctatus males display size dimorphism that has a genetic component, mating behavior of this species has not been documented. We conducted experiments using socially experienced and socially naive males to characterize the mating behavior of this species and to evaluate potential size-dependent differences in behavior. Males were tested with postpartum (presumably receptive) and midcycle (presumably unreceptive) females in different social environments. Whereas neither size class of P. quadripunctatus males performed courtship displays or altered behavior based on female receptivity, large males performed several reproductive behaviors more frequently than small males. This trend was repeatable and occurred in all social environments examined. Some males also attempted to mate with other males, with small males showing a greater tendency to perform this behavior than large males. The manner in which differences in reproductive activity translate into differences in reproductive success must be examined before inferring sexual selection favoring large males in P. quadripunctatus.  相似文献

The nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita has been developed as a biological control agent for slugs and snails. Slugs avoid areas where P. hermaphrodita is present. We investigated whether behavioural avoidance of P. hermaphrodita is a common feature of slugs and snails by exposing eight species to P. hermaphrodita. We showed that slugs generally avoided P. hermaphrodita, whereas snails did not. We also showed that slugs specifically avoided the commercial strain and a natural isolate of P. hermaphrodita and were not deterred by other nematodes such as Steinernema kraussei or Turbatrix aceti. We also showed that slugs avoided the dauer stage of P. hermaphrodita and not mixed-stage cultures. Furthermore, slugs do not avoid dead P. hermaphrodita or exudates from live nematodes. Taken together, we have unravelled further factors that are essential for slugs to avoid P. hermaphrodita in soil, which could have important implications for the biological control of slugs and snails.  相似文献

Decreasing the agar concentration of a counting medium from the usual 1.5% resulted in larger colonies with less interference from gas in Clostridium botulinum 115B and C. sporogenes PA 3679. Optimal agar concentration was 0.65% for C. botulinum with 24-hr incubation and 0.50% for C. sporogenes with 48-hr incubation. Lower concentrations yielded growth too diffuse for counting. Motility was considered the explanation for increased colony size in softer agar. The greater the degree of motility, the greater would be the diffusibility expected, and thus the higher the agar concentration required to insure discrete colonies. For quantitating motility, evaluations were made by use of microscopic examination of liquid cultures and rate of diffusion in a semisolid medium. With both criteria, the degree of motility of C. botulinum 115B clearly exceeded that of C. sporogenes PA 3679. Small-colony variants of C. botulinum in 0.65% agar yielded only small colonies on subculture, with a corresponding decrease in degree of motility of the cells by both criteria. Colony size of the nonmotile C. perfringens ATCC 3624 was unaffected by lowered agar concentrations.  相似文献

Ochromonas danica Prings., a chrysomonad alga which demonstrates a high degree of nutritional versatility, is capable of feeding on the toxic blue-green alga Microcystis aeruginosa Kuetz. In this paper light microscopic, electron microscopic, and cytochemical examinations of endocytosis in O. danica are reported, with particular emphasis on the vicissitudes of endocytic and lysosomal activities during intra-cellular digestion. An interpretation of the function of organelles associated with endocytosis is presented.  相似文献

Caves offer a stable and protected environment from harsh and changing outside prevailing conditions. Hence, they represent an interesting habitat for studying life in extreme environments. Here, we report the presence of a member of the ancient eukaryote red algae Cyanidium group in a coastal cave of the hyperarid Atacama Desert. This microorganism was found to form a seemingly monospecific biofilm growing under extremely low photon flux levels. Our work suggests that this species, Cyanidium sp. Atacama, is a new member of a recently proposed novel monophyletic lineage of mesophilic “cave” Cyanidium sp., distinct from the remaining three other lineages which are all thermo-acidophilic. The cave described in this work may represent an evolutionary island for life in the midst of the Atacama Desert.  相似文献
