Although many tropical stream consumers have large effects on resource quantity and quality, little is known about the relative importance of consumption versus bioturbation. We quantified egestion rates of freshwater shrimps ( Atya spp. and Xiphocaris elongata ) and mayflies (Leptophlebiidae) in two forest streams within the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. Consumer body size was a strong predictor of egestion rates, with mass-specific egestion rates declining with body size and per-individual egestion rates increasing with body size. We used these egestion rates, together with published rates of epilithon removal by consumers and epilithon accrual by particle deposition and periphytic growth ( i.e. , with and without consumer access), to estimate the importance of consumption and bioturbation after storm events and during base-flow conditions. Our estimates suggest that direct consumption of epilithon can only account for a minor proportion (< 5%) of material removed following storm events, with most removal likely resulting from bioturbation. During base-flow conditions, we found that consumers (largely shrimps) may be capable of consuming a significant proportion of the material that would otherwise accrue on benthic substrata, but this result was limited to one high-elevation site. Our study suggests that bioturbation is the dominant process that redistributes and entrains fine particles after storm events, and that a variable fraction of deposited and accrued benthic material may be consumed during base-flow conditions. Our results underscore the importance of tropical stream animals in altering the benthic environment through both consumption and bioturbation, and suggest that consumer-mediated material cycling is likely to be context dependent.  相似文献

Fibroblast-mediated collagen gel contraction has been used as an in vitro model of tissue remodeling. Thrombin is one of the mediators present in the milieu of airway inflammation and may be involved in airway tissue remodeling. We have previously reported that thrombin stimulates fibroblast-mediated collagen gel contraction partially through the PAR1/PKCε signaling pathway [Q. Fang, X. Liu, S. Abe, T. Kobayashi, X.Q. Wang, T. Kohyama, M. Hashimoto, T. Wyatt, S.I. Rennard, Thrombin induces collagen gel contraction partially through PAR1 activation and PKC-ε, Eur. Respir. J. 24 (2004) 918-924]. Here, we further report that the delta-isoform of PKC (PKCδ) is also activated by thrombin and involved in the thrombin-mediated augmentation of collagen gel contraction. Thrombin (10 nM) significantly increased PKCδ activity (over 5-fold increase after 15-30 min stimulation) and stimulated phosphorylation of PKCδ. Rottlerin, a PKCδ inhibitor, completely inhibited activation of PKCδ and partially blocked collagen gel contraction stimulated by thrombin. Similarly, PKCδ-specific siRNA significantly inhibited PKCδ activation without affecting PKCε expression and activation. Furthermore, suppression of PKCδ by siRNA resulted in partial blockade of thrombin-augmented collagen gel contraction. These results suggest that thrombin contributes to the tissue remodeling in inflammatory airways and lung diseases at least partially through both PKCδ and PKCε signaling.  相似文献

Objective: To examine breakfast consumption in subjects maintaining a weight loss in the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR). Research Methods and Procedures: A cross-sectional study in which 2959 subjects in the NWCR completed demographic and weight history questionnaires as well as questions about their current breakfast consumption. All subjects had maintained a weight loss of at least 13.6 kg (30 lb) for at least 1 year; on average these subjects had lost 32 kg and kept it off for 6 years. Results: A large proportion of NWCR subjects (2313 or 78%) reported regularly eating breakfast every day of the week. Only 114 subjects (4%) reported never eating breakfast. There was no difference in reported energy intake between breakfast eaters and non-eaters, but breakfast eaters reported slightly more physical activity than non-breakfast eaters (p = 0.05). Discussion: Eating breakfast is a characteristic common to successful weight loss maintainers and may be a factor in their success.  相似文献

The covalent sequence specificity of a series of nitrogen mustard and imidazole-containing analogues of distamycin was determined using modified sequencing techniques. The analogues tether benzoic acid mustard (BAM) and possess either one, two or three imidazole units. Examination of the alkylation specificity revealed that BAM produced guanine-N7 lesions in a pattern similar to conventional nitrogen mustards. The monoimidazole-BAM conjugate also produced guanine-N7 alkylation in a similar pattern to BAM, but at a 100-fold lower dose. The diimidazole and triimidazole conjugates did not produce detectable guanine-N7 alkylation but only alkylated at selected sites in the minor groove. Unexpectedly, the alkylation specificity at equivalent doses was nearly identical to that found for the previously reported pyrrole-BAM conjugates. The consensus sequence, 5'-TTTTGPuwas strongly alkylated by the triimidazole conjugate in preference to other similar sites including three occurrences of 5'-TTTTAA. Footprinting studies were carried out to examine the non-covalent DNA binding interactions. These studies revealed that the tripyrrole- BAM conjugate bound non-covalently to the same AT-rich sites as distamycin. In contrast, whereas the Im3lexitropsin bound non-covalently to GC-rich sequences, the triimidazole-BAM conjugate did not detectably footprint to either GC- or AT-rich regions at equivalent doses. The results indicate that the alkylation event is not solely dictated by the non-covalent binding and might be influenced by a unique sequence dependent conformational feature of the consensus sequence 5'-TTTTGPu.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions of the arylmethane dyes Chromoxane pure blue BLD (C.I. No. 43825) and Chromoxane pure blue B (C.I. No. 43830) will stain beryllium oxide. In the presence of EDTA the staining of other metals is masked. As a specific stain for BeO, formol saline fixed paraffin sections are hydrated and stained for 1 hr with either 0.1 gm of pure blue BLD in 100 ml of pH 4.0 Na-acetate buffer or with 0.1 gm of pure blue B in 1 N NaOH adjusted to pH 9.0 with HCl. To mask interference from other metal ions, 9 gm of Na2-EDTA is added to 100 ml of the stain solution. BeO is stained blue, organic tissue components are either unstained or pink. Results of tests against other materials show that a high degree of specificity may be expected from these dyes. A 1% aqueous solution of neutral red may be used as a counterstain.  相似文献

Early remains of Helianthus annuus L. unearthed at the San Andrés site in the Gulf Coast region of Tabasco, Mexico, constitute the earliest record of domesticated sunflower. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) age determinations of a large domesticated seed and achene produced dates of 4130 ± 40 years before the present (B.P.) and 4085 ± 50 B.P., respectively. These discoveries challenge the longstanding hypothesis that sunflower was domesticated in eastern North America. Moreover, when considered with other recent discoveries on plant domestication, these data suggest a reconsideration of the idea that the eastern United States was an independent hearth for domestication.  相似文献

Six strains of branched blue-green algae were examined in a search for lines to an explanation for apparent noncompetitiveness. Classical taxonomic treatments were often inadequate for confident species determination; forms that were very differ their morphologically frequently “keyed” to the same species. Strain distinctions based on comparative morphological and physiological studies were inconclusive. With the exception of 1 species, there were no substantial differences in physiological rates. In addition to the branching habit, diversity of cellular form was found to be an outstanding group characteristic. Individual cells of developing trichomes became a spore-like and then divided to produce either cell clusters or lateral branches. The eventual separation of daughter cells by sheath materials may be analogous to spore formation in Nostocales and could be the factor which determines the nature of these organisms. The Stigonemataceae may not represent the pinnacle of blue-green algal development but may, instead, be a primitive and basic form linking coccoid and filamentous algae.  相似文献
