The relative abundance of calcareous nannofossil taxa in a sequence of samples collected from a continuous Upper Maastrichtian section in Alabama has been analyzed using statistical techniques. Results indicate that an increase of arbitrarily chosen long-ranging forms can be represented by a slowly fluctuating secular trend with a superimposed cyclical component. Provided that a number of reasonable assumptions are made, the dominant frequencies of the periodic component are within the order of magnitude of the accepted frequency of the Perihelion cycle or “Milenkovitch astronomical insolation curves” (Milenkovitch, 1938). 相似文献

The effect of incremental exercise to exhaustion on the change in pulmonary clearance rate (k) of aerosolized (99m)Tc-labeled diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid ((99m)Tc-DTPA) and the relationship between k and arterial PO(2) (Pa(O(2))) during heavy work were investigated. Ten male cyclists (age = 25 +/- 2 yr, height = 180.9 +/- 4.0 cm, mass = 80.1 +/- 9.5 kg, maximal O(2) uptake = 5. 25 +/- 0.35 l/min, mean +/- SD) completed a pulmonary clearance test shortly (39 +/- 8 min) after a maximal O(2) uptake test. Resting pulmonary clearance was completed >/=24 h before or after the exercise test. Arterial blood was sampled at rest and at 1-min intervals during exercise. Minimum Pa(O(2)) values and maximum alveolar-arterial PO(2) difference ranged from 73 to 92 Torr and from 30 to 55 Torr, respectively. No significant difference between resting k and postexercise k for the total lung (0.55 +/- 0.20 vs. 0. 57 +/- 0.17 %/min, P > 0.05) was observed. Pearson product-moment correlation indicated no significant linear relationship between change in k for the total lung and minimum Pa(O(2)) (r = -0.26, P > 0.05). These results indicate that, averaged over subjects, pulmonary clearance of (99m)Tc-DTPA after incremental maximal exercise to exhaustion in highly trained male cyclists is unchanged, although the sampling time may have eliminated a transient effect. Lack of a linear relationship between k and minimum Pa(O(2)) during exercise suggests that exercise-induced hypoxemia occurs despite maintenance of alveolar epithelial integrity. 相似文献

A novel method, single-molecule anisotropy imaging, has been employed to simultaneously study lateral and rotational diffusion of fluorescence-labeled lipids on supported phospholipid membranes. In a fluid membrane composed of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, in which the rotational diffusion time is on the order of the excited-state lifetime of the fluorophore rhodamine, a rotational diffusion constant, D(rot) = 7 x 10(7) rad(2)/s, was determined. The lateral diffusion constant, measured by direct analysis of single-molecule trajectories, was D(lat) = 3.5 x 10(-8) cm(2)/s. As predicted from the free-volume model for diffusion, the results exhibit a significantly enhanced mobility on the nanosecond time scale. For membranes of DPPC lipids in the L(beta) gel phase, the slow rotational mobility permitted the direct observation of the rotation of individual molecules characterized by D(rot) = 1.2 rad(2)/s. The latter data were evaluated by a mean square angular displacement analysis. Extinction was recognized as a scientific fact 200 years ago, although no adequate paradigm has emerged to explain the process. Prevailing theory has focused on ‘cause(s)’ of extinction but has neglected ‘effect’ and ‘mechanism’. These omissions preclude the formulation of a functional paradigm necessary for remedial action in response to the impending anthropogenic mediated, worldwide extinction crisis. The new paradigm is defined as the multi‐generational, attritional loss of reproductive fitness. Stabilizing selection continuously adapts species to specific ecosystems, which often results in highly evolved species prone to extinction when environments shift. Some species survive by tracking the declining palaeoclimates in which they presumably evolved, often becoming relicts prior to extinction. Compelling new evidence shows that even mass extinctions are largely a result of environmental change leading to widespread, attritional reproductive decline, rather than a result of instantaneous global catastrophes. 相似文献

There is currently renewed interest in assessing the feasibility of the sterile insect technique (SIT) to control African malaria vectors in designated areas. The SIT relies on the sterilization of males before mass release, with sterilization currently being achieved through the use of ionizing radiation. This paper reviews previous work on radiation sterilization of Anopheles mosquitoes. In general, the pupal stage was irradiated due to ease of handling compared to the adult stage. The dose-response curve between the induced sterility and log (dose) was shown to be sigmoid, and there was a marked species difference in radiation sensitivity. Mating competitiveness studies have generally been performed under laboratory conditions. The competitiveness of males irradiated at high doses was relatively poor, but with increasing ratios of sterile males, egg hatch could be lowered effectively. Males irradiated as pupae had a lower competitiveness compared to males irradiated as adults, but the use of partially-sterilizing doses has not been studied extensively. Methods to reduce somatic damage during the irradiation process as well as the use of other agents or techniques to induce sterility are discussed. It is concluded that the optimal radiation dose chosen for insects that are to be released during an SIT programme should ensure a balance between induced sterility of males and their field competitiveness, with competitiveness being determined under (semi-) field conditions. Self-contained 60Co research irradiators remain the most practical irradiators but these are likely to be replaced in the future by a new generation of high output X ray irradiators. 相似文献
