Spores of the dinoflagellate Chytriodinium are known to infest copepod eggs causing their lethality. Despite the potential to control the population of such an ecologically important host, knowledge about Chytriodinium parasites is limited: we know little about phylogeny, parasitism, abundance, or geographical distribution. We carried out genome sequence surveys on four manually isolated sporocytes from the same sporangium, which seemed to be attached to a copepod nauplius, to analyze the phylogenetic position of Chytriodinium based on SSU and concatenated SSU/LSU rRNA gene sequences, and also characterize two genes related to the plastidial heme pathway, hemL and hemY. The results suggest the presence of a cryptic plastid in Chytriodinium and a photosynthetic ancestral state of the parasitic Chytriodinium/Dissodinium clade. Finally, by mapping Tara Oceans V9 SSU amplicon data to the recovered SSU rRNA gene sequences from the sporocytes, we show that globally, Chytriodinium parasites are most abundant within the pico/nano‐ and mesoplankton of the surface ocean and almost absent within microplankton, a distribution indicating that they generally exist either as free‐living spores or host‐associated sporangia. 相似文献

The American lobster is a poikilotherm that inhabits a marine environment where temperature varies over a 25°C range and depends
on the winds, the tides and the seasons. To determine how cardiac performance depends on the water temperature to which the
lobsters are acclimated we measured lobster heart rates in vivo. The upper limit for cardiac function in lobsters acclimated
to 20°C is approximately 29°C, 5°C warmer than that measured in lobsters acclimated to 4°C. Warm acclimation also slows the
lobster heart rate within the temperature range from 4 to 12°C. Both effects are apparent after relatively short periods of
warm acclimation (3–14 days). However, warm acclimation impairs cardiac function at cold temperatures: following several hours
exposure to frigid (<5°C) temperatures heart rates become slow and arrhythmic in warm acclimated, but not cold acclimated,
lobsters. Thus, acclimation temperature determines the thermal limits for cardiac function at both extremes of the 25°C temperature
range lobsters inhabit in the wild. These observations suggest that regulation of cardiac thermal tolerance by the prevailing

The hierarchical competition model has been a useful tool in investigating the mechanisms of coexistence between competing species, and thus for understanding the foundations of biodiversity. Here we show that the geometric picture of community assemblage found by Nowak and May for the constant-fecundity version of this model can be extended to a whole family of tradeoffs between fecundity and mortality. In this picture, the proportion of the remaining space used by a species can be related to the amount of free space (in aspect space) behind the "competitive shadow" of the adjacent superior competitor, and in turn to the size of the competitive shadow cast by the species itself. We show that this geometric model is scale invariant in the rescaled aspect space and use this fact to investigate the limits to diversity and explore how communities assemble under this model. 相似文献

The natural habitats of most microbes are dynamic and include spatial gradients of growth substrates, electron acceptors, pH, salts, and inhibitory compounds. To mimic this diffusive aspect of nature, we developed an analytical diffusion gradient chamber (DGC) that can be used to separate, enrich for, isolate, and study the behavior of microorganisms. The chamber is a polycarbonate box containing an arena (5 by 5 by 2 cm) into which is cast a semisolid growth medium. Continuously replenished solute reservoirs positioned on each side of the arena but separated from it by a porous membrane enable the formation throughout the gel of multiple, intersecting gradients of solutes in two dimensions. With glucose as the solute, a gradient which spanned a 100-fold range in concentration was established across the arena in about 4 days. The shape of the glucose gradient was accurately predicted by a mathematical model based on Fickian diffusion. The growth and migratory behavior of Escherichia coli in response to imposed gradients of attractants (aspartate, alpha-methyl aspartate, and serine) and a repellent (valine) were examined. Cells responded in predictable ways to such gradients by forming distinctive growth and migration patterns in the DGC. This was true for wild-type E. coli as well as specific chemotaxis and motility mutants. The patterns yielded information about the threshold concentration of chemoeffectors needed to elicit a response as well as their saturating concentration. It was also evident that the metabolism of attractants significantly affected the gradients and, hence, the movement of cells. Finally, it was possible to separate E. coli and Pseudomonas fluorescens in the DGC on the basis of their differential responses to gradients of various chemoeffectors. 相似文献

Accurate estimation and forecasts of net biome CO2 exchange (NBE) are vital for understanding the role of terrestrial ecosystems in a changing climate. Prior efforts to improve NBE predictions have predominantly focused on increasing models' structural realism (and thus complexity), but parametric error and uncertainty are also key determinants of model skill. Here, we investigate how different parameterization assumptions propagate into NBE prediction errors across the globe, pitting the traditional plant functional type (PFT)-based approach against a novel top-down, machine learning-based “environmental filtering” (EF) approach. To do so, we simulate these contrasting methods for parameter assignment within a flexible model–data fusion framework of the terrestrial carbon cycle (CARDAMOM) at a global scale. In the PFT-based approach, model parameters from a small number of select locations are applied uniformly within regions sharing similar land cover characteristics. In the EF-based approach, a pixel's parameters are predicted based on underlying relationships with climate, soil, and canopy properties. To isolate the role of parametric from structural uncertainty in our analysis, we benchmark the resulting PFT-based and EF-based NBE predictions with estimates from CARDAMOM's Bayesian optimization approach (whereby “true” parameters consistent with a suite of data constraints are retrieved on a pixel-by-pixel basis). When considering the mean absolute error of NBE predictions across time, we find that the EF-based approach matches or outperforms the PFT-based approach at 55% of pixels—a narrow majority. However, NBE estimates from the EF-based approach are susceptible to compensation between errors in component flux predictions and predicted parameters can align poorly with the assumed “true” values. Overall, though, the EF-based approach is comparable to conventional approaches and merits further investigation to better understand and resolve these limitations. This work provides insight into the relationship between terrestrial biosphere model performance and parametric uncertainty, informing efforts to improve model parameterization via PFT-free and trait-based approaches. 相似文献

The genus Ceratocystis sensu stricto includes important fungal pathogens of
woody and herbaceous plants. This genus is distinguished from species in
Ceratocystis sensu lato by the presence of Chalara anamorphs. Ascospore
shape has been used extensively in delineating Ceratocystis taxa, which
show a large variety of ascospore shapes. Sequence analysis of one region
of he 18S ribosomal RNA subunit and two regions of the 28S ribosomal RNA
subunit showed that there was a majority of multiple substitutions at
nucleotide sites and that there was a low transition/transversion ratio, T
= 0.72. Both of these results suggest that these are well established, old
species. Ascospore morphology, for the most part, was not congruent with
the molecular phylogeny, and the use of morphological characters may be
misleading in the taxonomy of these species.

Microbial communities are commonly characterised through the metabarcoding of environmental DNA. This DNA originates from both viable (including dormant and active) and dead organisms, leading to recent efforts to distinguish between these states. In this study, we further these approaches by distinguishing not only between viable and dead cells but also between dormant and actively growing cells. This is achieved by sequencing both rRNA and rDNA, in conjunction with propidium monoazide cross-linked rDNA, to partition the active, dormant and relic fractions in environmental samples. We apply this method to characterise the diversity and assemblage structure of these fractions of microeukaryotes in intertidal sediments during a wet-dry-rewet incubation cycle. Our findings indicate that a significant proportion of microeukaryotic phylotypes detected in the total rDNA pools originate from dormant and relic microeukaryotes in the sediments, both in terms of richness (dormant, 13 ± 2%; relic, 47 ± 5%) and read abundance (dormant, 20 ± 7%; relic, 14 ± 5%). The richness and sequence proportion of dormant microeukaryotes notably increase during the transition from wet to dry conditions. Statistical analyses suggest that the dynamics of diversity and assemblage structure across different activity fractions are influenced by various environmental drivers. Sexual characters may reveal the quality of a potential mate, including the mate's level of infection with parasites. Females that prefer males with low levels of infection or no infection may benefit in several ways. Direct benefits may include avoidance of infection, acquistition of larger nuptial gifts or enhancement in fecundity due to differences in male fertility. Females may also benefit indirectly by producing offspring that are more resistant to infections. We measured female preference for odours produced by male grain beetles, Tenebrio molitor, that were either infected by a tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta, or uninfected. This parasite is not transmitted directly between conspecifics. Females were attracted to odours of all males, but they were less attracted to those from parasitized males. To the contrary, females were preferentially attracted to infected females. Males did not show any biased attraction to odours from infected and uninfected male beetles. Females that mated with highly infected males produced fewer offspring than females mated to uninfected males, indicating parasitic infection inflicts multiple costs to males.
