Purpose
Despite interest in an environmentally conscious decision between disposable and reusable cups, a comprehensive and current study for US consumers is not yet available. Guidance in favor of single-use cups rely on outdated or non-ISO-compliant results with limited uncertainty information. Such claims are insufficiently generalizable. This article delivers an updated comparative life cycle impact assessment of reusable ceramic cups and single-use expanded polystyrene cups.Methods
The ReCiPe midpoint model was selected. Scenario uncertainties are addressed by evaluating compliant standard dishwashing appliance models from 2004 to 2013 used in 26 US subregional utility grids. A utility snapshot from 2009 is applied with extension to recent shifts in generation from increased penetration of natural gas and renewable energy. Parameter uncertainty is quantified through statistical methods.Results
Where there is statistical difference, results almost entirely favor reusable cups in the USA. For climate change, 16 % of users have higher impact for ceramic cups washed in 2013 by minimally compliant dishwashers. Higher climate change impacts for 32 % of reusable cup users is indicated with 2004 average dishwashers, though using a cup twice between washes shifts the impact in favor of the reusable cup.Conclusions
Disposable cup scenarios do not account for film sleeves, lids, printing, and less conservative shipping weights and distances and therefore reflect a best case scenario. Impact for reusable cups is expected to decrease further as the electricity mix becomes less CO2-intensive with replacement of coal-fired generators by natural gas, wind, and solar and as less efficient dishwashers are replaced with new units compliant to current laws. 相似文献993.

Social and genetic factors can influence smoking behavior. Using olfactogustatory stimuli as the sensory cue for intravenous nicotine self‐administration (SA), we previously showed that social learning of nicotine contingent odor cue prevented rats from developing conditioned taste aversion and allowed them to instead establish stable nicotine SA. We hypothesized that genetic factors influenced socially acquired nicotine SA. A heterogeneous stock (HS; N/NIH) of outbred rats was trained to self‐administer nicotine using the social learning protocol. Both male and female HS rats acquired nicotine SA, but females self‐administered more nicotine than males. After extinction, the context previously paired with nicotine SA, in conjunction with socially transmitted drug cues, was sufficient to cause reinstatement of drug‐seeking behavior. Wide variation in both nicotine intake and reinstatement was observed. Using multiple regression analysis, we found that measures of social interaction were significant predictors of nicotine intake and reinstatement of drug seeking in both males and females. Furthermore, measures of depression were predictors of nicotine intake in both males and females, anxiety was a predictor only in males and response to novelty was a predictor only in females. In males, measures of both depression and anxiety predicted nicotine reinstatement. Together, these data supported the ideas that genetically determined propensities for emotional and social phenotypes are significant determinants for nicotine‐reinforced behavior, and that the HS rat is a suitable tool for dissecting genetic mechanisms that may underlie the interaction between social behavior, anxiety, depression and smoking . 相似文献

The canopy is host to a large percentage of the flora and fauna in tropical wet forests and is distinct from the forest floor in plant richness, soil type and microclimate. In this study, we examined the influence of tree species and season on soil nutrient cycling processes in canopy soils of four tree species common to Costa Rican wet forests. We also compared the canopy soils to the associated forest floor mineral soils. Both tree species and season had strong effects on canopy soil nutrients and processes. Canopy soils from trees with high litter lignin concentrations had higher net N-mineralization rates and higher dissolved inorganic N concentrations than those with low lignin concentrations. During the dry season, net N-immobilization occurred and dissolved organic and inorganic N and available P concentrations were significantly higher than during the wet season. Overall, canopy soils had higher N levels and higher fungi + bacteria richness than forest floor mineral soils. The differences in canopy soil properties observed among tree species indicates that these species have distinct N cycles that reflect differences in both soil origin and biological controls. 相似文献

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) can reduce human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) viremia to clinically undetectable levels. Despite this dramatic reduction, some virus is present in the blood. In addition, a long-lived latent reservoir for HIV-1 exists in resting memory CD4+ T cells. This reservoir is believed to be a source of the residual viremia and is the focus of eradication efforts. Here, we use two measures of population structure—analysis of molecular variance and the Slatkin-Maddison test—to demonstrate that the residual viremia is genetically distinct from proviruses in resting CD4+ T cells but that proviruses in resting and activated CD4+ T cells belong to a single population. Residual viremia is genetically distinct from proviruses in activated CD4+ T cells, monocytes, and unfractionated peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The finding that some of the residual viremia in patients on HAART stems from an unidentified cellular source other than CD4+ T cells has implications for eradication efforts.Successful treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) reduces free virus in the blood to levels undetectable by the most sensitive clinical assays (18, 36). However, HIV-1 persists as a latent provirus in resting, memory CD4+ T lymphocytes (6, 9, 12, 16, 48) and perhaps in other cell types (45, 52). The latent reservoir in resting CD4+ T cells represents a barrier to eradication because of its long half-life (15, 37, 40-42) and because specifically targeting and purging this reservoir is inherently difficult (8, 25, 27).In addition to the latent reservoir in resting CD4+ T cells, patients on HAART also have a low amount of free virus in the plasma, typically at levels below the limit of detection of current clinical assays (13, 19, 35, 37). Because free virus has a short half-life (20, 47), residual viremia is indicative of active virus production. The continued presence of free virus in the plasma of patients on HAART indicates either ongoing replication (10, 13, 17, 19), release of virus after reactivation of latently infected CD4+ T cells (22, 24, 31, 50), release from other cellular reservoirs (7, 45, 52), or some combination of these mechanisms. Finding the cellular source of residual viremia is important because it will identify the cells that are still capable of producing virus in patients on HAART, cells that must be targeted in any eradication effort.Detailed analysis of this residual viremia has been hindered by technical challenges involved in working with very low concentrations of virus (13, 19, 35). Recently, new insights into the nature of residual viremia have been obtained through intensive patient sampling and enhanced ultrasensitive sequencing methods (1). In a subset of patients, most of the residual viremia consisted of a small number of viral clones (1, 46) produced by a cell type severely underrepresented in the peripheral circulation (1). These unique viral clones, termed predominant plasma clones (PPCs), persist unchanged for extended periods of time (1). The persistence of PPCs indicates that in some patients there may be another major cellular source of residual viremia (1). However, PPCs were observed in a small group of patients who started HAART with very low CD4 counts, and it has been unclear whether the PPC phenomenon extends beyond this group of patients. More importantly, it has been unclear whether the residual viremia generally consists of distinct virus populations produced by different cell types.Since the HIV-1 infection in most patients is initially established by a single viral clone (23, 51), with subsequent diversification (29), the presence of genetically distinct populations of virus in a single individual can reflect entry of viruses into compartments where replication occurs with limited subsequent intercompartmental mixing (32). Sophisticated genetic tests can detect such population structure in a sample of viral sequences (4, 39, 49). Using two complementary tests of population structure (14, 43), we analyzed viral sequences from multiple sources within individual patients in order to determine whether a source other than circulating resting CD4+ T cells contributes to residual viremia and viral persistence. Our results have important clinical implications for understanding HIV-1 persistence and treatment failure and for improving eradication strategies, which are currently focusing only on the latent CD4+ T-cell reservoir. 相似文献

Regulation of wing muscle temperature is important for sustaining flight in many insects, and has been well studied in honeybees.
It has been much less well studied in wasps and has never been demonstrated in Polistes paper wasps. We measured thorax, head, and abdomen temperatures of inactive Polistes dominulus workers as they warmed after transfer from 8 to ~25°C ambient temperature, after removal from hibernacula, and after periods
of flight in a variable temperature room. Thorax temperature (T
th) of non-flying live wasps increased more rapidly than that of dead wasps, and T
th of some live wasps reached more than 2°C above ambient temperature (T
a), indicating endothermy. Wasps removed from hibernacula had body region temperatures significantly above ambient. The T
th of flying wasps was 2.5°C above ambient at T
a = 21°C, and at or even below ambient at T
a = 40°C. At 40°C head and abdomen temperatures were both more than 2°C below T

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a recently described member of the Paramyxoviridae family/Pneumovirinae subfamily and shares many common features with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), another member of the same subfamily. hMPV causes respiratory tract illnesses that, similar to human RSV, occur predominantly during the winter months and have symptoms that range from mild to severe cough, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. Like RSV, the hMPV virus can be subdivided into two genetic subgroups, A and B. With RSV, a single monoclonal antibody directed at the fusion (F) protein can prevent severe lower respiratory tract RSV infection. Because of the high level of sequence conservation of the F protein across all the hMPV subgroups, this protein is likely to be the preferred antigenic target for the generation of cross-subgroup neutralizing antibodies. Here we describe the generation of a panel of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies that bind to the hMPV F protein. A subset of these antibodies has the ability to neutralize prototypic strains of both the A and B hMPV subgroups in vitro. Two of these antibodies exhibited high-affinity binding to the F protein and were shown to protect hamsters against infection with hMPV. The data suggest that a monoclonal antibody could be used prophylactically to prevent lower respiratory tract disease caused by hMPV. 相似文献

Maternal glucocorticoids have been postulated to play an important role in prenatal programming for adult hypertension in the offspring. However, we have shown previously that offspring hypertension caused by maternal dexamethasone subcutaneous administration at 100 microg x kg(-1) x day(-1) can be accounted for by the corresponding reduction in food intake that these mothers experience. The present studies were designed to determine whether there is a lower dose of dexamethasone that does not reduce maternal food intake yet still causes hypertension in the adult offspring. Pregnant rats were treated with subcutaneous dexamethasone at 50 (D50) or 25 (D25) microg x kg(-1) x day(-1) on days 15-20 of pregnancy. An additional group was untreated or received vehicle injections (control). D25 and D50 dams reduced their food intake by 17% during and after treatment and gained 31% less weight than control over the course of gestation. In adulthood ( approximately 21 wk), chronically instrumented male offspring of D50 and D25 had normal blood pressures (D50: 131 +/- 2 mmHg and D25: 127 +/- 3 mmHg vs. 127 +/- 2 mmHg in control). Qualitatively similar results were found in female offspring. Thus neither dexamethasone per se at these doses nor the accompanying modest reductions in maternal food intake and weight gain have blood pressure programming effects. As far as has been tested, there does not appear to be a dose of dexamethasone that, given over this time period in the rat, programs offspring hypertension without reducing maternal food intake and weight gain.
