Introduction
There is growing evidence that interleukin 17 (IL-17) producing T cells are involved in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Previous studies showed that increased percentages of T-cell subsets expressing the costimulatory molecules CD80 and CD134 are associated with disease activity and renal involvement in SLE. Although ambient air was first shown to be carcinogenic in 1947 and mutagenic in 1975, no overarching review of the subsequent literature has been produced. Recently, Claxton et al. [L.D. Claxton, P.P. Matthews, S.H. Warren, The genotoxicity of ambient outdoor air, a review: Salmonella mutagenicity, Mutat. Res./Rev. Mutat. Res. 567 (2004) 347-399] reviewed the literature on the mutagenicity of urban air in the Salmonella mutagenicity assay. Here, we review the literature on the mutagenicity of urban air in other test systems and review the carcinogenicity of urban air in experimental systems. Urban air was carcinogenic in most of the reports involving rodents. Studies ascribed carcinogenic activity primarily to PAHs, nitroarenes, and other aromatic compounds. Atmospheric conditions, along with the levels and types of pollutants, contributed to the variations in carcinogenic and mutagenic activity of air from different metropolitan areas. The majority of the mutagenesis literature was in the Salmonella assay (50%), with plant systems accounting for most of the rest (31%). The present data give little support to the use of plant systems to compare air mutagenicity among multiple sites or studies. Studies in mice have shown that particulate air pollution causes germ-cell mutations. Air sheds contain similar types and classes of mutagens; however, the levels of these compounds vary considerably among air sheds. Combustion emissions were associated with much of the mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of urban air. Most studies focused on the particulate fraction; thus, additional work is needed on the volatile and semi-volatile fractions, metals, and atmospheric transformation. Smaller particles have greater percentages of extractable organic material and are more mutagenic than larger particles. Although hundreds of genotoxic compounds have been identified in ambient air, only a few (<25) are routinely monitored, emphasizing the value of coupling bioassay with chemistry in the monitoring of air for carcinogenic and mutagenic activities and compounds. 相似文献

Background
A recent study on expression and function of the ortholog of the Drosophila collier (col) gene in various arthropods including insects, crustaceans and chelicerates suggested a de novo function of col in the development of the appendage-less intercalary segment of insects. However, this assumption was made on the background of the now widely-accepted Pancrustacea hypothesis that hexapods represent an in-group of the crustaceans. Hymenopteran species with single-locus complimentary sex-determination (sl-CSD) face an additional cost of inbreeding because of a loss of diversity at the sex-determining locus. Laboratory studies of a range of Hymenoptera have found that a small percentage of diploid males produce viable diploid sperm, and that if these males mate, then the resultant females produce triploid offspring that are sterile. Here, we use microsatellite markers to determine the frequency of triploid individuals of Bombus muscorum and B. jonellus in a model island system. Triploids were found in populations of both species. Observed triploid frequencies of up to 8% were detected, and estimated total frequencies peaked at 20% with respect to normal diploid workers. For both species, triploid frequency was negatively correlated with surrogates of population size, providing direct evidence for inbreeding in small populations. Populations limited to <~15 km(2) of suitable habitat were particularly likely to harbour triploids. Estimated total triploid frequencies were higher in B. muscorum than in B. jonellus, perhaps due to the greater dispersal range of the latter species. Implications for the conservation of rare social hymenopterans are discussed. 相似文献
