The capitate is often considered the "keystone" of the carpus, not simply because of its central and prominent position in the wrist, but also because of its mechanical interactions with neighboring bones. The purpose of this study was to determine in vivo three-dimensional capitate kinematics. Twenty uninjured wrists were investigated using a recently developed, non-invasive markerless bone registration (MBR) technique. Surface contours of the capitate, third metacarpal and radius were extracted from computed tomography images of seven wrist positions and the three-dimensional motions of the capitate and third metacarpal were calculated with respect to the radius in wrist flexion-extension and radio-ulnar deviation. We found that in vivo capitate motion does not simply occur about a single pivot point like a universal joint, as demonstrated by non-intersecting rotation axes for different capitate motions. The distance between flexion and ulnar deviation axes was 3.9+/-2.0 mm, and the distance between extension and ulnar deviation axes was 3.9+/-1.4 mm. Furthermore, capitate axes for males tended to be located more distally than axes for females. However, we believe that this result is related to subject size and not to gender. We also found that there is minimal relative motion between the capitate and third metacarpal during these in vivo wrist motions. These findings demonstrate the complexity of capitate kinematics, as well as the different mechanisms through which wrist flexion, extension, radial deviation and ulnar deviation occur.  相似文献

The majority of angiosperms have a single annual bout of reproduction; species that flower continually throughout the year are rare. Ochradenus baccatus is a gynodioecious, desert shrub whose principal flowering period is associated with the winter rains, although large individuals also remain in flower during the hot, dry summer. The goal of this study was to examine the reproductive consequences of continual flowering in a large population of O. baccatus in Israel. Over the two years of this study, 60% of individuals flowered continuously. The number of fruit and seeds per fruit were greater in winter. Winter seeds were ~12% heavier than summer seeds and had significantly higher germination rates (80 vs. 60%, respectively). Although summer seeds were smaller and less likely to germinate, we propose that the benefit derived from their production lies in their ability to capitalize on the first winter rains. These early rain events provide a head start on establishment and growth in the hostile desert environment. Plants that delay reproduction until the onset of rains risk having their offspring face the dry conditions of spring and summer.  相似文献

Population genetic and biological distance studies of Late Woodland and Mississippian populations from west-central Illinois have provided insight into a number of prehistoric demographic processes at the regional level. However, a formal analysis of diachronic interregional gene flow has not been attempted within a population genetics framework. In this study, cranial measurements of 489 individuals from 13 skeletal samples across the central and lower Illinois valleys are analyzed to address two central issues. First, the potential impact of Cahokia's decline and associated demographic events on the population structure of west-central Illinois Mississippians is examined. Second, the Mississippian and Late Woodland interregional migration patterns are compared to determine if geographic and/or cultural boundaries affected local population structure. Following Relethford and Blangero ([1990] Hum Biol 62:5-25), R matrix methods are utilized to calculate observed and expected phenotypic variances, minimum genetic distances, and F(ST) values in order to detect patterns of differential external gene flow over time. The results indicate that Late Woodland peoples had a larger sphere of biological interaction than Mississippians. In the Mississippian period, culturally imposed barriers paralleled geographic boundaries between regions such that the geographic distribution of biological variation closely adheres to a classic isolation-by-distance model. Further, intraregional population movement was a more significant contributor to Mississippian population structure than interregional gene flow, even during periods of sociopolitical strife. Small-scale intraregional shuffling is consistent with other recent studies of prehistoric Mississippian biocultural and geographic landscapes in the southeast United States.  相似文献

Whiteflies accumulate the polyhydric alcohol, sorbitol, when exposed to temperatures greater than about 30 degrees C. Feeding experiments using artificial diets containing labeled sucrose showed that more of the label was incorporated into whitefly bodies and less was excreted in the honeydew when feeding was conducted at 41 compared with 25 degrees C. Analysis of the components of the honeydew showed that more of the excreted label was in glucose and fructose and less in trehalulose at 41 degrees C than at 25 degrees C. A similar effect of temperature on honeydew composition occurred for whiteflies feeding on cotton leaves. Measurement of the activities of glycolytic, pentose-phosphate and polyol pathway enzymes at 30 and 42 degrees C showed that NADPH-dependent ketose reductase/sorbitol dehydrogenase (NADPH-KR/SDH), sucrase, glucokinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activities were stimulated to a greater extent at 42 degrees C than trehalulose synthase and fructokinase. NAD(+)-sorbitol dehydrogenase (NAD(+)-SDH) activity was inhibited at 42 degrees C. We propose that high temperature alters metabolic activity in a way that increases the availability of fructose and stimulates pentose-phosphate pathway activity, providing both the substrate and coenzyme for sorbitol synthesis. High temperature also increases the activity of NADPH-KR/SDH, the enzyme in whiteflies that synthesizes sorbitol, but inhibits the activity of NAD(+)-SDH, the enzyme that degrades sorbitol.  相似文献

The genomes of the spirochaetes Borrelia burgdorferi and Treponema pallidum show strong strand-specific skews in nucleotide composition, with the leading strand in replication being richer in G and T than the lagging strand in both species. This mutation bias results in codon usage and amino acid composition patterns that are significantly different between genes encoded on the two strands, in both species. There are also substantial differences between the species, with T.pallidum having a much higher G+C content than B. burgdorferi. These changes in amino acid and codon compositions represent neutral sequence change that has been caused by strong strand- and species-specific mutation pressures. Genes that have been relocated between the leading and lagging strands since B. burgdorferi and T.pallidum diverged from a common ancestor now show codon and amino acid compositions typical of their current locations. There is no evidence that translational selection operates on codon usage in highly expressed genes in these species, and the primary influence on codon usage is whether a gene is transcribed in the same direction as replication, or opposite to it. The dnaA gene in both species has codon usage patterns distinctive of a lagging strand gene, indicating that the origin of replication lies downstream of this gene, possibly within dnaN. Our findings strongly suggest that gene-finding algorithms that ignore variability within the genome may be flawed.  相似文献

Correlations between protein structures and amino acid sequences are widely used for protein structure prediction. For example, secondary structure predictors generally use correlations between a secondary structure sequence and corresponding primary structure sequence, whereas threading algorithms and similar tertiary structure predictors typically incorporate interresidue contact potentials. To investigate the relative importance of these sequence-structure interactions, we measured the mutual information among the primary structure, secondary structure and side-chain surface exposure, both for adjacent residues along the amino acid sequence and for tertiary structure contacts between residues distantly separated along the backbone. We found that local interactions along the amino acid chain are far more important than non-local contacts and that correlations between proximate amino acids are essentially uninformative. This suggests that knowledge-based contact potentials may be less important for structure predication than is generally believed.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle from extremely obese individuals exhibits decreased lipid oxidation compared with muscle from lean controls. It is unknown whether this effect is observed in vivo or whether the phenotype is preserved after massive weight loss. The objective of this study was to compare free fatty acid (FFA) oxidation during rest and exercise in female subjects who were either lean [n = 7; body mass index (BMI) = 22.6 +/- 2.2 kg/m(2)] or extremely obese (n = 10; BMI = 40.8 +/- 5.4 kg/m(2)) or postgastric bypass patients who had lost >45 kg (weight reduced) (n = 6; BMI = 33.7 +/- 9.9 kg/m(2)) with the use of tracer ([(13)C]palmitate and [(14)C]acetate) methodology and indirect calorimetry. The lean group oxidized significantly more plasma FFA, as measured by percent fatty acid uptake oxidized, than the extremely obese or weight-reduced group during rest (66.6 +/- 14.9 vs. 41.5 +/- 16.4 vs. 39.9 +/- 15.3%) and exercise (86.3 +/- 11.9 vs. 56.3 +/- 22.1 vs. 57.3 +/- 20.3%, respectively). BMI significantly correlated with percent uptake oxidized during both rest (r = -0.455) and exercise (r = -0.459). In conclusion, extremely obese women and weight-reduced women both possess inherent defects in plasma FFA oxidation, which may play a role in massive weight gain and associated comorbidities.  相似文献
