The study presents the biomass and spatial distribution of Sardinella aurita in the Libyan, Maltese and southern Sicily waters, estimated during four acoustic surveys in summer 2008 and 2010. Strong differences in terms of both spatial distribution and total biomass between years and areas were found, with higher total biomass in 2010 than in 2008 in both southern and northern areas of the central Mediterranean. Habitat suitability and changes in the spatial dynamics of round sardinella among areas and years are then explored in relation to total biomass variation and environmental factors. The area of presence of S. aurita increased in the Maltese and Sicilian waters in 2010 with respect to 2008, while most of the total biomass observed in the two years occupied the same proportion of the continental shelf in Libyan waters. The link between environmental conditions and S. aurita area of presence and aggregation was investigated by means of generalized additive models (GAM). The application of GAM singled out the key role of depth and temperature in driving higher round sardinella aggregations, as they were able to explain in both years about the 48% of total deviance in the case of strictly positive values. Favourable habitat for round sardinella was found in waters shallower than 60 m depths, with a clear peak around 40 m depth. Favourable temperature values were above 22°C for presence/absence case and above 24°C when GAM was applied on strictly positive values. Overall S. aurita biomass and distribution were discussed in the light of the classical models proposed to describe the fish spatial dynamics in relation to an increase in total biomass.  相似文献

The European earwig, Forficula auricularia, is a cosmopolitan insect endemic to Europe, West Asia and North Africa, which has invaded many temperate regions of the world including Australia and New Zealand. F. auricularia has been shown to be a complex of morphologically identical, reproductively isolated lineages that possess two distinct clades of mitochondrial DNA. Entomological collection data, historical literature and further field collections were used to develop a greater understanding of Australian F. auricularia’s invasion biology and its current distribution. Genetic analysis of F. auricularia collected from Australia and New Zealand using two mitochondrial genes (COI and a fragment overlapping parts of the COI -COII genes) was also undertaken. To identify the possible source populations of the Australasian invasion these sequences were compared to those from 16 locations within Britain and continental Europe. All Australasian populations were shown to be of the clade B lineage. Tasmanian and New Zealand populations consist of a single subclade comprised of only 4 and 1 haplotypes respectively. The Australian mainland populations also contained a second subclade consisting of up to 11 haplotypes indicating that multiple introductions possibly occurred on the Australian mainland. Comparison of mitochondrial genomes from Australasian and European populations showed the Australian mainland subclade to be most closely related to Portuguese haplotypes, and the Tasmanian and New Zealand clade closely related to those in Brittany, France. No European haplotypes perfectly matched the Australasian sequences. Therefore, the original source populations are still to be identified with harbours on the Iberian Peninsula’s western coast and those on the English Channel likely candidate areas.  相似文献

A correlation between polyomavirus-induced oncogenesis and viral persistence on the one hand and/or prolonged genome replication potential on the other was established with respect to their respective organ distributions. Prolonged replication potential is defined as the capacity of a genome to replicate in a given organ from the time of infection up to the onset of oncogenesis. This conclusion was derived following intraperitoneal infection of BALB/c mice with wild-type strain A2. Viral genomes were used as parameters of persistence and replication and were detected by Southern blotting and PCR analysis. The major tumor target organs (mammary gland, skin, and bone), which have not been previously analyzed for persistence, were compared with other, non-tumor-prone organs (kidney, liver, lung, spleen, and salivary gland). A progressive loss of viral genomes was observed in all tissues as a function of time postinfection; however, genomes were shown to persist through 20 weeks postinfection in the mammary glands, skin, and bones to an extent similar to that in the previously described kidneys (D. J. McCance, J. Virol. 39:958-962, 1981; W. P. Rowe, J. W. Hartley, J. D. Estes, and R. J. Huebner, Natl. Cancer Inst. Monogr. 4:189-209, 1960). Thus, tumors arise among organs that sustain a persistent infection, but not all such organs develop tumors (e.g., the kidney). The capacity of organs to support de novo replication at various ages, including the age reached when the first tumors are detected, was also determined using a 3-day infection period for ages between 0 and 7 weeks. For all organs tested, a higher level of genomes was observed in organs of mice infected as neonates than in those infected after the age of 3 weeks. However, marked organ-specific differences were seen in the degree and timing of loss of replication. In particular, viral genome replication, although reduced, was maintained in the mammary glands, skin, and bones of adult animals, in contrast to the kidneys. We conclude that organ-specific oncogenesis correlates with two organ-specific parameters: persistence of viral genomes and prolonged viral genome replication potential. This may reflect a requirement for continued viral genome replication and/or gene expression for tumorigenesis. In turn, these parameters may be linked to the tissue-specific continued capacity for cellular division.  相似文献

Current phylogenetic tree reconstruction methods assume that there is a single underlying tree topology for all sites along the sequence. The presence of mosaic sequences due to recombination violates this assumption and will cause phylogenetic methods to give misleading results due to the imposition of a single tree topology on all sites. The detection of mosaic sequences caused by recombination is therefore an important first step in phylogenetic analysis. A graphical method for the detection of recombination, based on the least squares method of phylogenetic estimation, is presented here. This method locates putative recombination breakpoints by moving a window along the sequence. The performance of the method is assessed by simulation and by its application to a real data set.   相似文献

We used the repetitive character of transposable elements to isolate a non-LTR retrotransposon in Drosophila subobscura. bilbo, as we have called it, has homology to TRIM and LOA elements. Sequence analysis showed a 5' untranslated region (UTR), an open reading frame (ORF) with no RNA-binding domains, a downstream ORF that had structural homology to that of the I factor, and, finally, a 3' UTR which ended in several 5-nt repeats. The results of our phylogenetic and structural analyses shed light on the evolution of Drosophila non-LTR retrotransposons and support the hypothesis that an ancestor of these elements was structurally complex.   相似文献

The Okavango Delta depends on water quantity and quality to sustain its ecosystem services. Whereas many studies have been carried out on its hydrology, few have been done on water quality in the delta. Water pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were monitored at 10 sites along the Okavango–Boro–Thamalakane–Lake Ngami system almost fortnightly from June 2008 to June 2010. Water quality in the delta was generally good, despite high evapotranspiration rates which would normally produce very saline waters. Electrical conductivity and water temperature increased with distance from Mohembo to Lake Ngami, the former most likely due to evapoconcentration. In contrast, pH, DO, turbidity and TSS decreased with distance from Mohembo to Boro at the lower end of the seasonal floodplain, before increasing again to Lake Ngami. Dissolved oxygen and TSS most likely declined due to biological uptake and particle sedimentation, respectively. Strong and significant relationships were observed between TSS and turbidity and between DOC and EC, indicating that turbidity and EC could be useful proxies for routine estimations of TSS and DOC, respectively, in the delta.  相似文献

The suitability of using macroinvertebrates as bioindicators of stream water quality was tested in the Mkondoa River in an agricultural area at Kilosa, using the rapid bioassessment protocol. The family biotic index (FBI) showed marked variation in water quality along the stream from values ranging from 4.1 to 5.0 in the upstream reaches, indicating good water quality, 5.3 to 5.5 in the mid-reaches and 6.0 to 6.5 in the lower reaches. The water quality index (WQI) indicated that water quality was fair (77 ± 0.98) in the upstream reach of the Mkondoa, marginal (55 ± 0.86) in the midstream reach and poor (33 ± 0.45) in the downstream reach. There were significant relationships between biological oxygen demand and dissolved oxygen and the occurrence of specific taxa, mainly Chironomus and Caenis. Significant changes in macroinvertebrate abundance were mostly related to changes in water quality. As in other parts of the world, macroinvertebrate communities proved to be good biological indicators of water quality and they should be used as bioindicators in long-term monitoring of this river.  相似文献

In den letzten Jahren bemühte sich die systematische Forschung verstärkt, die oft sehr schematisch begrenzten Einheiten der Flechten mit modernen Methoden unter Berücksichtigung möglichst vieler Merkmale zu überprüfen und neu zu gliedern, Ökologische Merkmale wurden aber bei der Definition supraspezifischer taxonomischer Einheiten bei Flechten bisher kaum herangezogen. Eine Analyse der revidierten und neu gefaßten Taxa, z. B. innerhalb der Familie Lecideaceae, zeigt aber, daß diese Einheiten oft deutliche Parallelen und Schwerpunkte im ökologischen Bereich besitzen und sich somit ökologische Merkmale als zusätzliches Kriterium bei der Begründung von natürlichen Verwandtschaftsgruppen verwenden lassen. Andererseits kann eine stark abweichende Ökologie als Hinweis auf eine mögliche taxonomische Sonderstellung gelten (Beispiel: Ausgliederung von T. caradocensis als einziger Holzbewohner der Gattung Toninia aus diesem Genus), d. h., möglicherweise künstliche Taxa können für taxonomische Zwecke auf ökologisch und soziologisch auffallende Zäsuren hin untersucht werden. Derartige Querverbindungen zwischen Systematik und Ökologie finden sich besonders auf Gattungsniveau, lassen sich aber öfter auch in Familien hinein verfolgen. Somit können Fragen der Flechtentaxonomie niederer und mittlerer Kategorien durch Einbeziehung ökologischer Kriterien besser behandelt werden, als dies bei nur morphologischtypologischer Arbeitsweise der Fall ist. Um eine ökologische Affinität oder Zäsur zwischen Flechtentaxa aufzuzeigen, ist eine genauere Definition ihrer Ökologie nicht unbedingt notwendig. Eine ökologische Ähnlichkeit kann mit Hilfe pflanzensoziologischer Methoden nachgewiesen werden. Die Fruchtbarkeit der ökologisch-synökologischen Frageweise für die Flechtensystematik und die Bedeutung ökologischer Differenzierungen für die Evolution der Flechten werden diskutiert. In the present paper, various types of band-broadening effects in free-flow electrophoresis were investigated. They resulted from the velocity profiles of the liquid curtain and electroosmosis, temperature gradient, thermal diffusion and sample inlet geometry. An analytical free-flow electrophoresis apparatus permitted easy observation of these parameters. The experiments showed that the influence of the temperature gradient was negligible, whereas the effect of the velocity profiles on band broadening was higher than theoretically expected. In preparative work this is of utmost importance, since overlap of bands is not desirable. In this case, the zeta potential of the walls can be adjusted to that of the material to be separated, resulting in a considerable reduction of band broadening. Various approaches are indicated. Further attention was given to the influence of the relaxation effect on the separation. Conditions are shown where particles are separated either according to their surface charge density or to their size. The practical relevance of the results is discussed.  相似文献

When spinach leaf tissue was subjected to evaporative dehydration, photosynthetic capacity at very high (5%) CO2 concentration and saturating irradiance (300 W·m-2), decreased in parallel to the relative water content (RWC). A 50% inhibition was observed at 60–40% RWC. In order to examine whether the inhibition was caused by increased solute concentrations in chloroplasts or cytoplasm, an artificial stroma medium (ASM) was set up containing all major osmotically relevant solutes measured in isolated intact spinach chloroplasts. Subsequently, the response of enzyme activities to normal and to increased concentrations of ASM was examined. Inhibition of enzymes by a concerted increase of all solutes was well correlated to the in-vivo response of photosynthesis to dehydration (60% inhibition at double-strength ASM). Inhibitory solutes were mainly divalent inorganic anions, such as sulfate and phosphate. Inhibition of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase by these ions as studied in more detail. Inhibition of the enzyme by sulfate and phosphate was competitive with respect to ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate, but not with respect to CO2. The KI for sulfate was 2.1 mmol·l-1 and for phosphate 0.57 mmol·l-1. Sugars and amino acids at the concentrations found in spinach chloroplasts did not prevent inhibition of enzymes by anions.
