The objective is to evaluate thermal comfort in the rural highlands of Peru and determine if thermal conditions influence the risk of respiratory infections. The probit regression model is used for this, with the unit of analysis being adults over 60 years of age. The information source is the data from the National Household Survey and the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru. In addition, it was possible to monitor the temperature and the interior relative humidity of 4 types of bedrooms with a thermo-hygrometer and compared it with the desired thermal comfort index criterion. The results show that if the air temperature drops on average by one degree (1° C) in the area of residence, the probability of risk of respiratory infections in older adults increases by 0.18, although the relative humidity and the wind speed were not statistically significant at 1% significance level. Finally, the 4 types of bedrooms evaluated lacked the desired thermal comfort and increased the risk of acquiring respiratory infections. 相似文献

Homocysteine (Hcy) is a by-product of methionine metabolism. An imbalance of Hcy in the body may lead to hyperhomocysteinemia, a condition with elevated Hcy concentration in blood that may be one of the risk factors responsible for the development of several vascular diseases (thromboembolism, atherosclerosis, stroke, vascular diseases and dementia). Radix Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), a well-known Chinese medicinal herb that can activate and improve blood microcirculation, is noticeable for its beneficial effect in treating cardiovascular diseases. The present study is to demonstrate the protective effect of Danshen extract against the homocysteine-induced adverse effect on human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC). Homocysteine (5 mM) not only decreased the cell viability but also caused the disruption of capillary-like structure formation in vitro. The protective effect of Danshen aqueous extract and its active compounds on endothelial cell function were demonstrated through an in vitro tube formation assay, which mimics the new blood vessel formation. To identify the active components in the aqueous extract of Danshen, the content was characterized by instrumental analysis using high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (DAD) and electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). Interestingly, Danshen extract and its pure compounds showed different effectiveness in protecting HUVEC against Hcy-induced injury according to the following descending order: Danshen aqueous extract, 3-(3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)-2-hydroxy-propionic acid (Danshensu), protocatechuic acid, catechin and protocatechualdehyde. Alpha-thalassemia is a common hereditary anemia due to decreased or absent synthesis of alpha-globin chains. The most common causes of alpha-thalassemia are deletions that remove one or both functional alpha-globin genes, with a small proportion of cases involving nondeletional mutations of the alpha2- or alpha1-globin genes. Herein, we describe a single-tube multiplex amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) assay for rapid detection of six of the most common and severe nondeletional alpha-thalassemia mutations.
