An account is given of the Psocoptera collected on Curtis Island in February 1971. Of the nine species found, two are new and are described as Peripsocus melaleucae sp. n. and Spilopsocus masseyi sp. n.     

A mutation (Pro-30 to Leu) in CYP21 represents a potential nonclassic steroid 21-hydroxylase deficiency allele

The mild nonclassic form of steroid 21-hydroxylase deficiency is one of the most common autosomal recessive disorders in humans, occurring in almost 1% of caucasians and about 3% of Ashkenazi Jews. Many patients with this disorder carry a Val-281----Leu missense mutation in the CYP21 gene. This and most other mutations causing 21-hydroxylase deficiency are normally present in the CYP21P pseudogene and have presumably been transferred to CYP21 by gene conversion. To identify other potential nonclassic alleles, we used recombinant vaccinia virus to express two mutant enzymes carrying the mutations Pro-30----Leu (normally present in CYP21P) and Ser-268----Thr (considered a normal polymorphism of CYP21). Whereas the activity of the protein carrying the Ser----Thr mutation was indeed indistinguishable from the wild type, the enzyme with the Pro----Leu substitution had 60% of wild-type activity for 17-hydroxyprogesterone and about 30% of normal activity for progesterone when assayed in intact cells. When kinetic analysis of the latter mutant enzyme was performed in cellular lysates, the first order rate constants (maximum velocity/dissociation constant) for both substrates were reduced 10- to 20-fold compared with those for the wild-type enzyme. Pro-30 is conserved in many microsomal P450 enzymes and may be important for proper orientation of the enzyme with respect to the aminoterminal transmembrane segment. The Pro----Leu mutation was present in 5 of 18 patients with nonclassic 21-hydroxylase deficiency, suggesting that this mutation indeed acts as a nonclassic deficiency allele.     

Pollen—embryogenesis and chromosomal variability in anther culture of Brassica hirta Moench （Sinapis alba L）

The anther cultures of Brassica hirta underwent pollenembryogenesis and callusing,which showed a wide range of chromosome numbers varying from 9 (n=12) to a highly polyploid.For embryogenesis,pretreatment of floral buds in 0.4 M sucrose solution for 72 hrs at 4℃ was superior to freshly cultured anthers.Culture temperature of 30℃ for 14 days before maintenance of cultures at 25℃ was significantly beneficial for embryo yield in comparison to cultures continuously incubated at 25℃.Dark treatment during culture was more effective for pollen-embryo yield.     

Regional distribution and pH sensitivity ofAzospirillum associated with wheat roots in Eastern Australia

In a survey ofAzospirillum spp. on the roots and associated soil of wheat grown in eastern Australia, azospirilla were isolated from approximately 40% of samples from areas of soil pH between 5.0 and 6.6. However, azospirilla isolates were rare in soil between pH 4.5 and 5.0 and absent below pH 4.5. Of 25 independent isolates, 17 wereA. brasiliense and eight wereA. lipoferum. No selection forA. brasiliense Nir^– strains by wheat roots was observed. Only one of six endorhizosphere isolates wereA. brasiliense Nir^–, compared with three of nine from unsterilized roots plus associated soil, and three of eight from soil. With a medium buffered with 0.05 M malate and 0.05 M phosphate, it was found that allAzospirillum isolates had a lower minimum pH for growth when supplied with fixed nitrogen than when grown under nitrogen-fixing conditions. Strains isolated from soils had a minimum pH for growth that was less than the pH of the soil from which they were isolated. However, a significant proportion of strains isolated from roots had a minimum pH for growth that was higher than the pH of the associated soil suggesting that the wheat roots provided an ecological niche protecting against soil acidity.     

G protein-coupled receptor-induced Akt activity in cellular proliferation and apoptosis

Akt (also known as protein kinase B) plays an integral role in many intracellular signaling pathways activated by a diverse array of extracellular signals that target several different classes of membrane-bound receptors. Akt plays a particularly prominent part in signaling networks that result in the modulation of cellular proliferation, apoptosis and survival. Thus, the overexpression of Akt subtypes has been measured in a number of cancer types, and dominant-negative forms of Akt can trigger apoptosis and reduce the survival of cancer cells. G protein-coupled receptors act as cell-surface detectors for a diverse spectrum of biological signals and are able to activate or inhibit Akt via several direct and indirect means. In this review, we shall document how G protein-coupled receptors are able to control Akt activity and examine the resulting biochemical and physiological changes, with particular emphasis on cellular proliferation, apoptosis and survival.     

Ecological processes: A key element in strategies for nature conservation

Summary A common approach to nature conservation is to identify and protect natural ‘assets’ such as ecosystems and threatened species. While such actions are essential, protection of assets will not be effective unless the ecological processes that sustain them are maintained. Here, we consider the role of ecological processes and the complementary perspective for conservation arising from an emphasis on process. Many kinds of ecological processes sustain biodiversity: including climatic processes, primary productivity, hydrological processes, formation of biophysical habitats, interactions between species, movements of organisms and natural disturbance regimes. Anthropogenic threats to conservation exert their influence by modifying or disrupting these processes. Such threats extend across tenures, they frequently occur offsite, they commonly induce non‐linear responses, changes may be irreversible and the full consequences may not be experienced for lengthy periods. While many managers acknowledge these considerations in principle, there is much scope for greater recognition of ecological processes in nature conservation and greater emphasis on long time‐frames and large spatial scales in conservation planning. Practical measures that promote ecological processes include: monitoring to determine the trajectory and rate of processes; incorporating surrogates for processes in conservation and restoration projects; specific interventions to manipulate and restore processes; and planning for the ecological future before options are foreclosed. The long‐term conservation of biodiversity and the well‐being of human society depend upon both the protection of natural assets and maintaining the integrity of the ecological processes that sustain them.     

Female waist-to-hip ratio,body mass index and sexual attractiveness in China

Men and women at Northwest University (n=751), Xi'an, China were asked to judge the attractiveness of photographs of female patients who had undergone micrograft surgery to reduce their waist-to-hip ratios (WHR). Micrograft surgery involves harvesting adipose tissue from the waist and reshaping the buttocks to produce a low WHR and an 'hourglass' female figure. This gynoid distribution of female body fat has been shown to correlate with measures of fertility and health. Significantly larger numbers of subjects, of both sexes, chose post-operative photographs, with lower WHRs, as more attractive than pre-operative photographs of the same women. Some patients had gained, and some had lost weight, post-operatively, with resultant changes in body mass index (BMI). However, these changes in BMI were not related to judgments of attractiveness. These results show that the hourglass female figure is rated as attractive in China, and that WHR, rather than BMI, plays a crucial role in such attractiveness judgments.
