Objective:

Asian studies have reported on an association of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection with insulin resistance (IR) in normal‐weight subjects. Whether such an association likewise exists in European subjects with severe obesity was questioned.

Design and Methods:

To address this question, 370 severely obese patients from our database were identified, who had undergone a gastroscopy with a histological examination of gastric mucosal biopsies and a concurrent assessment metabolic blood parameters as a standard examination before bariatric surgery.

Results:

Seventy‐five (20.3%) of the subjects displayed a histologically proven Hp infection (Hp+). Sex distribution, age, and body mass index of Hp+ subjects did not differ from that of the subjects with no Hp infection (Hp–; all P > 0.293), but Hp+ subjects were significantly smaller (P = 0.006). Fasting glucose, insulin, high‐sensitive C reactive protein, and alanine aminotransferase levels as well as calculated indices of IR (i.e., HOMA‐IR, QUICKI) did not differ between Hp+ and Hp– subjects (all P > 0.42). However, Hp+ subjects showed significantly higher triglyceride levels and a higher total chloesterol‐to‐HDL ratio but lower sex‐hormone binding globulin (SHGB) levels than Hp– subjects (all P ≤ 0.05).

Conclusion:

While our results obtained in European severely obese patients do not provide evidence for an enhanced IR state associated with gastric Hp infection, they suggest that the presence of the bacterium in gastric biopsies is associated with an adverse lipid profile and reduced SHGB levels.  相似文献

Biogeochemical and microbiological processes in the upper sediment layers of tidal flats were analysed in many investigations, while deeper zones remained largely unexplored. Therefore, denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of 16S rRNA gene fragments along the depth profile of up to 5.5 m-long sediment cores was performed in comparison with lithological and geochemical parameters. The investigation revealed that different compartments of the sediment columns were characterized by specific microbial communities. These compartments were analysed by sequencing of 113 DGGE bands. The upper layers down to 160-200 cm were dominated by gamma- and delta-Proteobacteria representing more than 60% of the total number of phylotypes. Underneath, a striking shift in community composition was observed, as the Proteobacteria were replaced by Chloroflexi with more than 60% of all sequences. As sulfate was still available as an electron acceptor in these layers, the abundance of Chloroflexi might be promoted by the electron donor or the quality of the carbon source. The dominance of this group, previously known as green non-sulfur bacteria, indicates the presence of a typical deep-biosphere microbial community in relatively young subsurface sediments. Thus, tidal flats might offer a convenient possibility to study and understand certain aspects of the deep biosphere in general.  相似文献

1. The steady-state oxidation of ferrocytochrome c by dioxygen catalyzed by cytochrome c oxidase, is inhibited non-competitively towards cytochrome c by methanethiol, ethanethiol, 1-propanethiol and 1-butanethiol with Ki values of 4.5, 91, 200 and 330 μM, respectively.2. The inhibition constant Ki of ethanethiol is found to be constant between pH 5 and 8, which suggests that only the neutral form of the thiol inhibits the enzyme.3. The absorption spectrum of oxidized cytochrome c oxidase in the Soret region shows rapid absorbance changes upon addition of ethanethiol to the enzyme. This process is followed by a very slow reduction of the enzyme. The fast reaction, which represents a binding reaction of ethanethiol to cytochrome c oxidase, has a k1 of 33 M?1 · s?1 and dissociation constant Kd of 3.9 mM.4. Ethanethiol induces fast spectral changes in the absorption spectrum of cytochrome c, which are followed by a very slow reduction of the heme. The rate constant for the fast ethanethiol reaction representing a bimolecular binding step is 50 M?1 · s?1 and the dissociation constant is about 2 mM. Addition of up to 25 mM ethanethiol to ferrocytochrome c does not cause spectral changes.5. EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) spectra of cytochrome c oxidase, incubated with methanethiol or ethanethiol in the presence of cytochrome c and ascorbate, show the formation of low-spin cytochrome a3-mercaptide compounds with g values of 2.39, 2.23, 1.93 and of 2.43, 2.24, 1.91, respectively.  相似文献

Pharmaceutical tablets made of modified high-amylose starch have a hydrophilic polymer matrix into which water can penetrate with time to form a hydrogel. Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging was used to study the water penetration and the swelling of the matrix of these tablets. The tablets immersed in water were imaged at different time intervals on a 300 MHz NMR spectrometer. Radial images show clearly the swelling of the tablets and the water concentration profile. The rate constants for water diffusion and the tablet swelling were extracted from the experimental data. The water diffusion process was found to follow case II kinetics at 25 degrees C. NMR imaging also provided spin density profiles of the water penetrating inside the tablets.  相似文献

The investigations of a series of 281 cryoprecipitates produced from blood stored at 10 degrees C for 12-18 hours resulted in equal values as compared with those preparations from a control group of 53 preparations which had been prepared from blood maximally stored for 4 hours. Thus, international experiences could be confirmed. An improvement in the quality of erythrocyte concentrates simultaneously produced can be regarded as an additional advantage with respect to the formation of microaggregates during the time the stored blood can be made use of.  相似文献
