Existing computational models of structurefrom-motion — the appearance of three-dimensional motion generated by moving two-dimensional patterns — are all based on variations of optical flow or feature point correspondence within the interior of single objects. Three separate phenomena provide strong evidence that in human vision, structure-from-motion is significantly affected by surface boundary cues. In the first, a rotating cylinder is seen, though no variation in optical flow exists across the apparent cylinder. In the second, the shape of the bounding contour of a moving pattern dominates the actual differential motion within the pattern. In the third, the appearance of independently moving objects changes significantly when the boundary between them becomes indistinct. We describe a simple computational model sufficient to account for these effects. The model is based on qualitative constraints relating possible object motions to patterns of flow, together with an understanding of the patterns of flow that can be discriminated in practice.  相似文献

Two experiments examined self-adaptation within and cross-adaptationbetween two structurally different substances with almost identicalbitter chocolate odors, trimethyl pyrazine (TMP) and 2-propionyl-3-methylfuran (PMF). The first experiment charted psychophysical functionsfor odor intensity under steady-state self- and cross-adaptationwith adapting concentrations matched in perceived intensityat two different levels. Participants breathed an adapting concentrationcontinuously for 2 min and then rated test concentrations everyminute during momentary respites from the adapting stimulus.Both self-adaptation and cross-adaptation weakened the intensityof low test concentrations proportionally more than higher onesand thereby steepened the psychophysical functions. Adaptingstimuli at matched levels caused equivalent self-adaptation(i.e. altered the functions equivalently) and equivalent, thoughweaker, cross-adaptation (i.e. exhibited symmetry of cross-adaptation).The second experiment examined whether cross-adaptation to TMPand PMF would prove relatively specific. At a matched perceivedintensity of adapting stimulus, adaptation to TPM and PMF againproduced equal amounts of self-adaptation and of cross-adaptationto each other, though not on three other test stimuli: anethole,ethyl butyrate and 2,3 pentanedione. Both TMP and PMF showedsome generality as cross-adapting stimuli, with PMF showinga bit more than TMP. The present protocols and others discussedherein offer opportunities to consider functional criteria forthe relatedness of similar-smelling substances.  相似文献

Summary Genes for the major storage protein of potato, patatin, have been mapped genetically and physically in both the potato and tomato genomes. In potato, all patatin genes detected by the cDNA clone pGM01 map to a single locus at the end of the long arm of chromosome 8. By means of pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) it was possible further to delimit this locus, containing 10–15 copies of the gene, to a maximum size of 1.4 million base pairs. Hybridizations with class-specific clones suggest that the locus is at least partially divided into domains containing the two major types of patatin genes, class I and II. In tomato, patatin-homologous sequences were found to reside at the orthologous locus at the end of chromosome 8. The approximately three copies in tomato were localized by PFGE to a single fragment of 300 kilobases. Whereas the class II-specific 5 promoter sequences reside in tomato at the same locus as the coding sequences, the single class I-specific copy of the 5 promoter sequences was localized on chromosome 3 with no coding sequence attached to it. A clone from this chromosome 3 locus of tomato was isolated and by restriction fragment length polymorphism mapping it could be further shown that a similar class I-specific sequence also exists on chromosome 3 of potato. As in tomato, this copy on chromosome 3 is not linked to a coding sequence for patatin. The results are discussed with respect to genome evolution and PFGE analysis of complex gene families.  相似文献

Flooding the roots of greenhouse-grown muskmelon (Cucumis meloL. cv. Noy Yizreel) plants for 4 days reduced sucrose accumulation36% in the inner mesocarp and 88% in the outer mesocarp of developingfruit. Concentration of the translocated sugars raffinose andstachyose were also lower in fruit on flooded plants than inthose from nonflooded plants. In contrast, fruit hexose concentrationwas similar in both flooded and nonflooded plants. There wasno alteration in activities of enzymes associated with sucrosemetabolism in the fruit which could explain the decreased sucroseconcentration. Four days of root flooding caused no reductionin leaf carbon exchange rate or assimilate export rate, indicatingthat the reduction in fruit sucrose accumulation was not dueto source limitation. Root respiration, measured as CO2 evolution,was approximately 30% lower in anaerobic roots than in aerobicroots. When viewed as carbohydrate consumed, a doubling of glycolyticactivity occurred in the anaerobic root mass. Increased demandfor carbohydrates by anaerobic roots may lead to a reductionin translocated carbohydrates available for sucrose biosynthesisin the developing fruit. Small-scale spatial heterogeneity of soil organic matter (SOM) associated with patterns of plant cover can strongly influence population and ecosystem dynamics in dry regions but is not well characterized for semiarid grasslands. We evaluated differences in plant and soil N and C between soil from under individual grass plants and from small openings in shortgrass steppe. In samples from 0 to 5 cm depth, root biomass, root N, total and mineralizable soil N, total and respirable organic C, C:N ratio, fraction of organic C respired, and ratio of respiration to N mineralization were significantly greater for soil under plants than soil from openings. These differences, which were consistent for two sites with contrasting soil textures, indicate strong differentiation of surface soil at the scale of individual plants, with relative enrichment of soil under plants in total and active SOM. Between-microsite differences were substantial relative to previously reported differences associated with landscape position and grazing intensity in shortgrass steppe. We conclude that microscale heterogeneity in shortgrass steppe deserves attention in investigation of controls on ecosystem and population processes and when sampling to estimate properties at plot or site scales.  相似文献

We have found and characterized an antigen associated with crystal-containing cells in the stomium and connective tissue of the anthers of Nicotiana tabacum L. (tobacco). The antigen, defined by the monoclonal antibody NtF-8B1, localizes to subcellular regions surrounding the crystals. At the light-microscope level, the antigen is detectable just after the first appearance of crystals in the connective tissue of the anther, and at approximately the same time as the appearance of crystals in the stomium. The antigen is not detectable on a Western blot, and gave inconclusive results on a test of periodate sensitivity. It is not the crystals themselves, nor is the presence of the crystals required for antibody recognition. The antigen is sensitive to heat and protease treatment, indicating that it is a protein. The antigen is not tightly membrane-bound, in spite of its localization closely surrounding the crystals. The experimental literature has dealt intensively with the cortical contribution to epilepsy. Possibly because of the direction of technological advance, much less attention has been paid to the role of other structures. A model which emphasizes the role of some of those non-cortical structures, specifically that of thalamocortical modulation of cortical excitability, is developed. Some aspects of the petit mal seizure, a seizure type considered by some investigators to involve thalamocortical mechanisms, are predicted by the model. Although the thalamocortical mechanisms under study are not the only mechanism underlying seizures, a full understanding of the phenomenology of epilepsy needs to take into account the role of subcortical modification of cortical activities in addition to other mechanisms. Gloor has described two types of epileptogenesis: type I characteristic of non-convulsive seizure and type II characteristic of convulsions. There is disagreement as to whether or not the two mechanisms represent qualitatively different phenomena. Utilizing the thalamocortical model, it can be shown that the two types of epileptogenesis are qualitatively different. Furthermore, the thalamocortical model leads to a possible explanation of clinically different profiles of antipileptic efficacy of medications.  相似文献
