The role of top-down forces in host choice evolution of phytophagous arthropods is the subject of a vividly animated debate. Empirical evidence for the evolutionary role of top-down forces comes from studies showing that phytophagous arthropods prefer hosts that entail enemy-free space. The aim of this paper is to draw the attention of plant–arthropod researchers to the potentially, temporally variable nature of third trophic level effects. We show that this aspect is largely neglected in studies on enemy-free space, despite the fact that relative enemy impact varies seasonally among plants in at least some studies. We conclude that rigorous testing of the enemy-free space hypothesis can only be performed when within and between season variation in higher trophic level effects is taken into account.  相似文献

Syrticola mediterraneus n. sp. belonging to the family Cylindropsyllidae Sars (sensu Lang, 1948) is described from the Bay of Calvi (Corsica). The species is closely related to (?) Notopontia galapagoensis Mielke, 1982 and Syrticola flandricus Willems & Claeys, 1982. The former species is now transferred to the genus Syrticola as Syrticola galapagoensis n. comb.  相似文献

Summary The accumulation of mansonones E and F was investigated in Ulmus americana L. seedlings 5 weeks after inoculation with three aggressive and three non-aggressive isolates of Ophiostoma ulmi (Buism.) Nannf. The three non-aggressive isolates stimulated significantly more mansonone E and F accumulation than the three aggressive isolates of O. ulmi. Mansonone induction also varied within both the aggressive and the non-aggressive groups. Aggressive and non-aggressive isolates were recovered in equal frequencies from the inoculation wounds, whereas the aggressive isolates were recovered more frequently than the non-aggressive isolates 15 cm and 25 cm up the seedlings' stem. Vascular browning in the outer xylem of the seedlings correlated with mansonone E and F accumulation. Mansonone accumulation in U. americana seedlings is therefore associated with vascular browning and a reduction in fungal spread.  相似文献

Earthworms are supposed to play an important role in the dynamics of the soil seed bank, however, experimental evidence and quantitative data are scarce To evaluate the impact of the earthworm species Lumbricus terrains L on the vertical transport of seeds in the soil, laboratory experiments have been earned out Moreover, the worm casts produced and their seed content have been quantified in two chalk grassland sites during one year
The experiment on seed transport has been earned out in cylinders with controlled numbers of worms and seeds at different depths in stenlized soil Seeds used in this experiment proved to be eaten by the earthworms in preceding palatability tests A significant translocation of the seeds in the cylinders with earthworms was recorded after an eight-week period In spring earthworm activity was mainly found m the upper soil layers in the cylinders, whereas in summer the activity was spread over a larger vertical distance The amount of worm casts collected on permanently marked plots in two different chalk grasslands was very high a minimal quantity of c 750 g nr2 of worm casts were produced yearly The number of germinative seeds brought to the soil surface by worm casts was at least 60-100 nr2 each year This means that earthworm activity has a substantial impact on the soil seed bank dynamics and hence on the possibility of plant recruitment in this species-nch ecosystem  相似文献

Butanal is one of the odorous compounds produced in the animal-rendering and food-processing industries and also in sewage-treatment plants. It shows the necessity for complementing such plants with systems for off-gas treatment. Biofiltration using simple packing material was tested for the removal of butanal. Excellent results were obtained when the filters operated at optimal humidity and were supplemented with inorganic nutrients. Without nutrients, butyric acid was detected in the effluent gas, which may explain the lower efficiency of filters without nutrients. Under optimal conditions an elimination of around 90 g·m–3·h–1 was reached.  相似文献
