The effects of substrate analogs and energy inhibitors on glucose uptake and phosphorylation by Clostridium beijerinckii provide evidence for the operation of two uptake systems: a previously characterized phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent phosphotransferase system (PTS) and a non-PTS system probably energized by the transmembrane proton gradient. In both wild-type C. beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 and the butanol-hyperproducing mutant BA101, PTS activity declined at the end of exponential growth, while glucokinase activity increased in the later stages of fermentation. The non-PTS uptake system, together with enhanced glucokinase activity, may provide an explanation for the ability of the mutant to utilize glucose more effectively during fermentation despite the fact that it is partially defective in PTS activity. 相似文献

Extracts prepared from cultures of Bacillus subtilis, grown on maltose as the sole carbon source, lacked maltose phosphotransferase system activity. There was, however, evidence for a maltose phosphorylase activity, and such extracts also possessed both glucokinase and glucose phosphotransferase system activities. Maltose was accumulated by whole cells of B. subtilis by an energy-dependent mechanism. This uptake was sensitive to the effects of uncouplers, suggesting a role for the proton-motive force in maltose transport. Accumulation of maltose was inhibited in the presence of glucose, and there was no accumulation of maltose by a strain carrying the ptsI6 null-mutation. A strain carrying the temperature-sensitive ptsI1 mutation accumulated maltose normally at 37 degrees C but, in contrast to the wild-type, was devoid of maltose transport activity at 47 degrees C. The results indicate a role for the phosphotransferase system in the regulation of maltose transport activity in this organism. 相似文献

We mapped coloured snow during the summers of 1995 and 1996 at about 60 localities in the coastal region of northwest Spitsbergen.
The colour was mainly induced by snow algae (Chlamydomonas spp. and Chloromonas spp.). In the late summer of 1996, snow algal fields of several hundred meters in size were observed along the west and north
coasts. They had no preferred geographical orientation. We studied the abundance of primary pigments and secondary carotenoids
from different developmental stages of the snow algae of Chlamydomonas spp. under natural conditions. Extensive accumulation of astaxanthin and its esters accompanied the transition from green
biflagellated cells to orange spores, hypnozygotes and dark-red cysts. The photoprotective effect of the secondary carotenoids
is enhanced by concentration in cytoplasmic lipid droplets around the nucleus and chloroplast. The nutrient content of melt-water
and snow algae had no direct correlation with the content of secondary carotenoids. Relatively high Fe, Ca, P, K and Al contents
of snow algae were found, suggesting a good supply of these mineral elements.

Background
The statistical modeling of biomedical corpora could yield integrated, coarse-to-fine views of biological phenomena that complement discoveries made from analysis of molecular sequence and profiling data. Here, the potential of such modeling is demonstrated by examining the 5,225 free-text items in the Caenorhabditis Genetic Center (CGC) Bibliography using techniques from statistical information retrieval. Items in the CGC biomedical text corpus were modeled using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model.
