Human activities affect even the most remote and best preserved places on Earth. One of those places is Dalhousie Springs, Witjira National Park, in the arid centre of Australia. In 2003 we resurveyed the fish communities in springs to document changes since an earlier survey in 1991. Over the 12 years there were 18 population extirpations and only two colonizations, so total occurrences of five native species in 30 springs decreased from 83 to 67 populations. One species, the endemic Dalhousie goby, Chlamydogobius gloveri , accounted for 12 of the 18 population extirpations. Each fish species tended to persist in springs larger than some threshold size. Extirpations were related to spring size, with smaller springs more readily loosing populations, and to major habitat changes, which included large increases in the tropical reed Phragmites and concomitant decreases in open water, disturbed habitats, and dissolved oxygen. Extirpations of fish populations can be attributed primarily to habitat changes associated with reduced disturbance and herbivory as a result of the removal of feral livestock. These changes highlight the keystone impacts of large mammals on habitats and biotas of desert springs, and should be considered in management practices and policy decisions.  相似文献

Recognition of the significance of the boundary between ecological systems, often referred to as the ecotone, has a long history in the ecological sciences and in zoonotic disease research. More recent research in landscape ecology has produced an expanded view of ecotones and elaboration of their characteristics and functions in ecosystems. Parallel research on emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) and the causes of increased rates of pathogen transmission, spread, and adaptation suggests a correspondence between ecotonal processes and the ecological and evolutionary processes responsible for zoonotic and vector-borne emerging infections. A review of the literature suggests that ecotones play a role in a number of the most important EIDs. Yet these are the only diseases for which specific landscape ecological information exists in the literature or disease reports. However, the similar disease ecologies of these with about half of the approximately 130 zoonotic EIDs suggests ecotones, particularly their anthropogenic origination or modification, may be generally associated with ecotones and the global trend of increasing EIDs.  相似文献

A new experimental technique for measuring generalized three-dimensional motion of vertebral bodies during cyclic loading in vitro is presented. The system consists of an orthogonal array of three lasers mounted rigidly to one vertebra, and a set of three mutually orthogonal charge-coupled devices mounted rigidly to an adjacent vertebra. Each laser strikes a corresponding charge-coupled device screen. The mathematical model of the system is reduced to a linear set of equations with consequent matrix algebra allowing fast real-time data reduction during cyclic movements of the spine. The range and accuracy of the system is well suited for studying thoracolumbar motion segments. Distinct advantages of the system include miniaturization of the components, the elimination of the need for mechanical linkages between the bodies, and a high degree of accuracy which is not dependent on viewing volume as found in photogrammetric systems. More generally, the spectrum of potential applications of systems of this type to the real-time measurement of the relative motion of two bodies is extremely broad.  相似文献

Wolfe (1986, Psychol. Rev. 93, 269-282) proposed a model of human binocular vision based on the assumption of two functionally distinct classes of binocular neuron. These neurons may be regarded as logical AND and OR gates. In the present paper we assess the evidence relevant to this assumption. We find that while both types of binocular neuron have been described in the cortex of cat and monkey, there is no indication that they form functionally separate populations. Critical analysis of the psychophysical evidence for AND and OR channels in human vision suggests that much of the data presented in favor of an AND channel is subject to alternative interpretations. We conclude that the available data are not consistent with the existence of separate channels as proposed by Wolfe.  相似文献

Suppose it is desired to determine whether there is an association between any pair of p random variables. A common approach is to test H0 : R = I, where R is the usual population correlation matrix. A closely related approach is to test H0 : Rpb = I, where Rpb is the matrix of percentage bend correlations. In so far as type I errors are a concern, at a minimum any test of H0 should have a type I error probability close to the nominal level when all pairs of random variables are independent. Currently, the Gupta-Rathie method is relatively successful at controlling the probability of a type I error when testing H0: R = I, but as illustrated in this paper, it can fail when sampling from nonnormal distributions. The main goal in this paper is to describe a new test of H0: Rpb = I that continues to give reasonable control over the probability of a type I error in the situations where the Gupta-Rathie method fails. Even under normality, the new method has advantages when the sample size is small relative to p. Moreover, when there is dependence, but all correlations are equal to zero, the new method continues to give good control over the probability of a type I error while the Gupta-Rathie method does not. The paper also reports simulation results on a bootstrap confidence interval for the percentage bend correlation.  相似文献

The calpains are a superfamily of proteases with extensive relevance to human health and welfare. Vast research attention is given to the vertebrate ‘classical’ subfamily, making it surprising that the evolutionary origins, distribution and relationships of these genes is poorly characterized. Consequently, there exists uncertainty about the conservation of gene family structure, function and expression that has been principally defined from work with mammals. Here, more than 200 vertebrate classical calpains were incorporated in phylogenetic analyses spanning an unprecedented range of taxa, including jawless and cartilaginous fish. We demonstrate that the common vertebrate ancestor had at least six classical calpains, including a single gene that gave rise to CAPN11, 1, 2 and 8 in the early jawed fish lineage, plus CAPN3, 9, 12, 13 and a novel calpain gene, hereafter named CAPN17. We reveal that while all vertebrate classical calpains have been subject to persistent purifying selection during evolution, the degree and nature of selective pressure has often been lineage-dependent. The tissue expression of the complete classic calpain family was assessed in representative teleost fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. This highlighted systematic divergence in expression across vertebrate taxa, with most classic calpain genes from fish and amphibians having more extensive tissue distribution than in amniotes. Our data suggest that classical calpain functions have frequently diverged during vertebrate evolution and challenge the ongoing value of the established system of classifying calpains by expression.  相似文献
