Microbial growth associated with granular activated carbon in a pilot water treatment facility

The microbial dynamics associated with granular activated carbon (GAC) in a pilot water treatment plant were investigated over a period of 16 months. Microbial populations were monitored in the influent and effluent waters and on the GAC particles by means of total plate counts and ATP assays. Microbial populations between the influent and effluent waters of the GAC columns generally increased, indicating microbial growth. The dominant genera of microorganisms isolated from interstitial waters and GAC particles were Achromobacter, Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, Alcaligenes, Bacillus, Chromobacterium, Corynebacterium, Micrococcus, Microcyclus, Paracoccus, and Pseudomonas. Coliform bacteria were found in small numbers in the effluents from some of the GAC columns in the later months of the study. Oxidation of influent waters with ozone and maintenance of aerobic conditions on the GAC columns failed to appreciably enhance the microbial growth on GAC.     

Expression of acidic fibroblast growth factor mRNA in the developing and adult rat brain.

We have localized acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) mRNA in the developing and adult rat brain using in situ hybridization histochemistry. Prenatally, hybridization to aFGF mRNA was observed throughout the brain, with the strongest signal associated with cells of the developing cortical plate. Postnatally, labeling was localized to specific neuronal populations. In the hippocampus, labeling of the pyramidal cell layer and dentate granule cells was observed and became progressively more intense with maturation. Labeling was also observed in both the external and internal granule cell layers of the developing cerebellum. Pyramidal cells of the neocortex as well as neurons of the substantia nigra and locus ceruleus also express aFGF. This pattern persists into adulthood, although the intensity of the labeling is significantly reduced in the adult brain. These patterns of hybridization correlate with specific developmental events and suggest that aFGF plays a significant role in both central nervous system development and neuronal viability in the adult brain.

Three bag experiments were performed in Cheat Lake, West Virginia, an acid lake, to determine whether a blue-green alga,Anabaena, could be introduced coupled with a pH change to neutrality and nutrient addition.     

A general approach to carbocyclic sugar analogs: preparation of a carbocyclic analog of beta-D-fructofuranose

The development and execution of the first examples of a new and general approach to carbocyclic analogs of carbohydrates ("pseudo-sugars") is presented. Complete experimental details for the preparation of the carbocyclic analog of beta-D-fructofuranose 6-phosphate are described for the first time. In the conclusion, the success of the synthetic strategy is analyzed and an approach to retrosynthetic analysis based on "unitive synthons" is offered for consideration.     

Is exercise good for high blood pressure?

Ten men with uncomplicated essential hypertension (mean standing blood pressure 165/109 mm Hg) and 10 normal controls matched for age and weight were studied for the hypotensive potential of moderate exercise. Tests were conducted on a treadmill set to induce a steady heart rate of 120 beats/min and performed over five 10-minute periods separated by three minutes'' rest and finishing with 30 minutes'' sitting quietly in a chair.During exercise the mean systolic pressures were identical in the hypertensive patients and controls (175±SEM 5 mm Hg), the controls therefore sustaining an appreciably greater increase in pressure. During the 30-minute rest period after the tests both the control and hypertensive groups showed a significant and sustained fall in absolute systolic pressures as compared with pre-exercise values (p <0·001), the mean percentage reductions being 22% and 25% respectively.If a fall in blood pressure after exercise is maintained for four to 10 hours, then a “good walk” twice a day might be reasonable treatment for mild hypertension. Studies are continuing to determine the amount of exercise needed and the duration for which the reduction in blood pressure is maintained.     

The araC regulatory gene mRNA contains a leader sequence

Summary An estimation of the size of the araC gene in Escherichia coli B/r was made by sub-cloning restriction fragments of the araC-containing hybrid plasmid pTB1 into the plasmid pBR322. Plasmids which contained a functional araC gene were identified by genetic complementation tests. DNA sequence analysis of the promoter-proximal region of the araC gene revealed that araC mRNA contains a 150 nucleotide leader.
