Continuous ethanol fermentations were performed in duplicate for 60 days withZymomonas mobilis ATCC 331821 orSaccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 24859 in packed-bed reactors with polypropylene or plastic composite-supports. The plastic composite-supports used contained polypropylene (75%) with ground soybean-hulls (20%) and zein (5%) forZ. mobilis, or with ground soybean-hulls (20%) and soybean flour (5%) forS. cerevisiae. Maximum ethanol productivities of 536 gL–1 h–1 (39% yield) and 499 gL–1 h–1 (37% yield) were obtained withZ. mobilis on polypropylene and plastic composite-supports of soybean hull-zein, respectively. ForZ. mobilis, and optimal yield of 50% was observed at a 1.92h–1 dilution rate for soybean hull-zein plastic composite-supports with a productivity of 96gL–1h–1, whereas with polypropylene-supports the yield was 32% and the productivity was 60gL–1h–1. With aS. cerevisiae fermentation, the ethanol production was less, with a maximum productivity of 76gL–1h–1 on the plastic composite-support at a 2.88h–1 dilution rate with a 45% yield. Polypropylene-support bioreactors were discontinued due to reactor plugging by the cell mass accumulation. Support shape (3-mm chips) was responsible for bioreactor plugging due to extensive biofilm development on the plastic composite-supports. With suspensionculture continuous fermentations in continuously-stirred benchtop fermentors, maximum productivities of 5gL–1h–1 were obtained with a yield of 24 and 26% withS. cerevisiae andZ. mobilis, respectively. Cell washout in suspensionculture continuous fermentations was observed at a 1.0h–1 dilution rate. Therefore, for continuous ethanol fermentations, biofilm reactors out-performed suspension-culture reactors, with 15 to 100-fold higher productivities (gL–1h–1) and with higher percentage yields forS. cerevisiae andZ. mobilis, respectively. BackgroundChikungunya is an arbovirus, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which emerged in the Americas in 2013 and spread rapidly to almost every country on this continent. In Brazil, where the first cases were detected in 2014, it currently has reached all regions of this country and more than 900,000 cases were reported. The clinical spectrum of chikungunya ranges from an acute self-limiting form to disabling chronic forms. The purpose of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of chikungunya infection in a large Brazilian city and investigate the association between viral circulation and living condition.Methodology/principal findingsWe conducted a population-based ecological study in selected Sentinel Areas (SA) through household interviews and a serologic survey in 2016/2017. The sample was of 1,981 individuals randomly selected. The CHIKV seroprevalence was 22.1% (17.1 IgG, 2.3 IgM, and 1.4 IgG and IgM) and varied between SA from 2.0% to 70.5%. The seroprevalence was significantly lower in SA with high living conditions compared to SA with low living condition. There was a positive association between CHIKV seroprevalence and population density (r = 0.2389; p = 0.02033).Conclusions/significanceThe seroprevalence in this city was 2.6 times lower than the 57% observed in a study conducted in the epicentre of the CHIKV epidemic of this same urban centre. So, the herd immunity in this general population, after four years of circulation of this agent is relatively low. It indicates that CHIKV transmission may persist in that city, either in endemic form or in the form of a new epidemic, because the vector infestation is persistent. Besides, the significantly lower seroprevalences in SA of higher Living Condition suggest that beyond the surveillance of the disease, vector control and specific actions of basic sanitation, the reduction of the incidence of this infection also depends on the improvement of the general living conditions of the population. 相似文献

Diurnal variation in the dopamine level of rat brain areas: effect of sodium phenobarbital 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The levels of dopamine in the caudate nucleus, cerebellum, cortex and midbrain were determined every three hours in control rats nd in rats pretreated with sodium phenobarbital over a twenty-four hour period. All animals were adapted for a minimum period of three weeks to an environmental room equipped with a programmed 12 hour dark — 12 hour light illumination cycle. The level of dopamine was highest during the dark phase and lowest during the light phase of the photoperiod in all the brain areas studied. Sodium phenobarbital pretreatment increased dopamine level in all the brain areas studied at most times, particularly during the dark phase and enhanced the circadian rhythmicity of dopamine levels in the cortex, cerebellum and midbrain. 相似文献

Many bacteria exhibit multicellular behaviour, with individuals within a colony coordinating their actions for communal benefit. One example of complex multicellular phenotypes is myxobacterial fruiting body formation, where thousands of cells aggregate into large three-dimensional structures, within which sporulation occurs. Here we describe a novel theoretical model, which uses Monte Carlo dynamics to simulate and explain multicellular development. The model captures multiple behaviours observed during fruiting, including the spontaneous formation of aggregation centres and the formation and dissolution of fruiting bodies. We show that a small number of physical properties in the model is sufficient to explain the most frequently documented population-level behaviours observed during development in Myxococcus xanthus. 相似文献
