New Zealand fur seals are one of many pinniped species that survived the commercial sealing of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in dangerously low numbers. After the enforcement of a series of protection measures in the early twentieth century, New Zealand fur seals began to recover from the brink of extinction. We examined the New Zealand fur seal populations of Banks Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand using the mitochondrial DNA control region. We identified a panmictic population structure around Banks Peninsula. The most abundant haplotype in the area showed a slight significant aggregated structure. The Horseshoe Bay colony showed the least number of shared haplotypes with other colonies, suggesting a different origin of re-colonisation of this specific colony. The effective population size of the New Zealand fur seal population at Banks Peninsula was estimated at approximately 2500 individuals. The exponential population growth rate parameter for the area was 35, which corresponds to an expanding population. In general, samples from adjacent colonies shared 4.4 haplotypes while samples collected from colonies separated by between five and eight bays shared 1.9 haplotypes. The genetic data support the spill-over dynamics of colony expansion already suggested for this species. Approximate Bayesian computations analysis suggests re-colonisation of the area from two main clades identified across New Zealand with a most likely admixture coefficient of 0.41 to form the Banks Peninsula population. Approximate Bayesian computations analysis estimated a founder population size of approximately 372 breeding individuals for the area, which then rapidly increased in size with successive waves of external recruitment. The population of fur seals in the area is probably in the late phase of maturity in the colony expansion dynamic.  相似文献

Understanding the local and regional patterns of species distributions has been a major goal of ecological and evolutionary research. The notion that these patterns can be understood through simple quantitative rules is attractive, but while numerous scaling laws exist (e.g., metabolic, fractals), we are aware of no studies that have placed individual traits and community structure together within a genetics based scaling framework. We document the potential for a genetic basis to the scaling of ecological communities, largely based upon our long-term studies of poplars (Populus spp.). The genetic structure and diversity of these foundation species affects riparian ecosystems and determines a much larger community of dependent organisms. Three examples illustrate these ideas. First, there is a strong genetic basis to phytochemistry and tree architecture (both above- and belowground), which can affect diverse organisms and ecosystem processes. Second, empirical studies in the wild show that the local patterns of genetics based community structure scale up to western North America. At multiple spatial scales the arthropod community phenotype is related to the genetic distance among plants that these arthropods depend upon for survival. Third, we suggest that the familiar species-area curve, in which species richness is a function of area, is also a function of genetic diversity. We find that arthropod species richness is closely correlated with the genetic marker diversity and trait variance suggesting a genetic component to these curves. Finally, we discuss how genetic variation can interact with environmental variation to affect community attributes across geographic scales along with conservation implications.  相似文献

Using two genetic approaches and seven different plant systems, we present findings from a meta-analysis examining the strength of the effects of plant genetic introgression and genotypic diversity across individual, community and ecosystem levels with the goal of synthesizing the patterns to date. We found that (i) the strength of plant genetic effects can be quite high; however, the overall strength of genetic effects on most response variables declined as the levels of organization increased. (ii) Plant genetic effects varied such that introgression had a greater impact on individual phenotypes than extended effects on arthropods or microbes/fungi. By contrast, the greatest effects of genotypic diversity were on arthropods. (iii) Plant genetic effects were greater on above-ground versus below-ground processes, but there was no difference between terrestrial and aquatic environments. (iv) The strength of the effects of intraspecific genotypic diversity tended to be weaker than interspecific genetic introgression. (v) Although genetic effects generally decline across levels of organization, in some cases they do not, suggesting that specific organisms and/or processes may respond more than others to underlying genetic variation. Because patterns in the overall impacts of introgression and genotypic diversity were generally consistent across diverse study systems and consistent with theoretical expectations, these results provide generality for understanding the extended consequences of plant genetic variation across levels of organization, with evolutionary implications.  相似文献

In this study, the relationship between the concentration of extra-heavy crude petroleum in a clayey material and the toxicity, field capacity, temperature, and growth of a tropical forage grass (Brachiara humidicola) was determined empirically. For this type of petroleum the acute toxicity (Microtox®) was slight (CE50 = 63200 - 76400 mg/kg) even at high hydrocarbon concentrations (29279 mg/kg). Nonetheless, serious impacts were encountered in terms of an increase in soil temperature (+ 1.3 °C), reduction in field capacity (-10.7%) and reduction in aerial biomass (-97%). The relationship between hydrocarbon concentration and biomass resulted in a typical dose-response curve (r = 0.99), where a concentration of 2626 mg/kg of hydrocarbons corresponds to a maintenance of 90% biomass. Furthermore, during the duration of this study (one year) the biodegradation was proportional to the pasture biomass production (r = 0.997) indicating a synergistic relationship between the petroleum biodegrading microorganisms in the rhizosphere and the pasture.  相似文献

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades play important roles in disease resistance in model plant species such as Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). However, the importance of MAPK signaling pathways in the disease resistance of crops is still largely uninvestigated. To better understand the role of MAPK signaling pathways in disease resistance in soybean (Glycine max), 13, nine, and 10 genes encoding distinct MAPKs, MAPKKs, and MAPKKKs, respectively, were silenced using virus-induced gene silencing mediated by Bean pod mottle virus. Among the plants silenced for various MAPKs, MAPKKs, and MAPKKKs, those in which GmMAPK4 homologs (GmMPK4s) were silenced displayed strong phenotypes including stunted stature and spontaneous cell death on the leaves and stems, the characteristic hallmarks of activated defense responses. Microarray analysis showed that genes involved in defense responses, such as those in salicylic acid (SA) signaling pathways, were significantly up-regulated in GmMPK4-silenced plants, whereas genes involved in growth and development, such as those in auxin signaling pathways and in cell cycle and proliferation, were significantly down-regulated. As expected, SA and hydrogen peroxide accumulation was significantly increased in GmMPK4-silenced plants. Accordingly, GmMPK4-silenced plants were more resistant to downy mildew and Soybean mosaic virus compared with vector control plants. Using bimolecular fluorescence complementation analysis and in vitro kinase assays, we determined that GmMKK1 and GmMKK2 might function upstream of GmMPK4. Taken together, our results indicate that GmMPK4s negatively regulate SA accumulation and defense response but positively regulate plant growth and development, and their functions are conserved across plant species.  相似文献

The stimulus for the release of 72-kDa heat shock protein (HSP72) during exercise in humans is currently unclear. Recent evidence in an animal model is suggestive of an involvement of catecholamines. The present study, therefore, investigated the effect of caffeine supplementation, a known stimulator of sympathetic activity, on the extracellular (e)HSP72 response to prolonged exercise. Ten healthy male endurance-trained cyclists were recruited (age: 21 +/- 1 yr, maximum O(2) uptake 61.1 +/- 1.7 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1), mean +/- SE). Each subject was randomly assigned to ingest either 6 mg/kg body mass of caffeine (Caff) or placebo (Pla) 60 min before one of two 90-min bouts of cycling at 74 +/- 1% maximum O(2) uptake. Trials were performed at least 7 days apart in a counterbalanced design. Venous blood samples were collected by venepuncture at pretreatment, preexercise, postexercise, and 1 h postexercise. Serum caffeine and plasma catecholamines were determined using a spectrophotometric assay and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. Plasma HSP72 and cortisol were determined by ELISA. Serum caffeine concentrations were significantly increased throughout Caff, while no increases were detected in Pla. Caffeine supplementation and exercise was associated with a greater eHSP72 response than exercise alone (postexercise Caff 8.6 +/- 1.3 ng/ml; Pla 5.9 +/- 0.9 ng/ml). This greater eHSP72 response was associated with a greater epinephrine response to exercise in Caff. There was a significant increase in norepinephrine and cortisol, with no intertrial differences. The present data suggest that, in humans, catecholamines may be an important mediator of the exercise-induced increase in eHSP72 concentration.  相似文献

Interactions among shoots within plant modules could allow gall-insects to acquire resources from other plant parts near the feeding sites. As a result, nearby plant parts may act as a functional resource, or extended resource base. We tested for functional interconections between galls and adjacent ungalled shoots in Adelges cooleyi Gil. (Homoptera: Adelgidae) on Picea engelmanni, Engelmann spruce. Observations of gall and surrounding shoot weights showed that gall weights were twice normal shoot weights, but that surrounding shoot weights were unaffected. Reducing photosynthate availability by covering galls or surrounding shoots with opaque cloth suggested that functional interconnections exist among them; covering galls reduced surrounding current-year ungalled shoot weight, and covering surrounding shoots reduced their weight even further, but neither covering treatment affected gall or gall-insect weight. These patterns suggest that surrounding shoots constitute an extended and flexibly utilized resource base for adelgid galls. Resources made available via functional interconnections appeared to be equally available throughout adelgid galls. No differences were found in gall-insect performance in parts of the gall closer to connections with surrounding shoots compared to more distantly-located gall-insects. Further studies are required to examine patterns of resource movement among unmanipulated galls and shoots. Functional resources may be common features of plant/gall-insect interactions, potentially playing an important role in gall-insect reproductive success and habitat selection.  相似文献
