Since 1929 various surgical procedures have been devised to revascularize the ischemic heart to provide it with blood from extracoronary sources. A comparative study has been carried out in 80 mongrel dogs over a two-year period to evaluate the relative merits of cardio-omentopexy, left atrial pulmonary artery anastomosis and the Ivalon sponge operation. The Ivalon sponge procedure proved to be most effective in relieving artificially produced myocardial ischemia. The procedure has subsequently been carried out in two patients with crippling angina pectoris, and a complete relief of symptoms has been achieved in both.  相似文献

 Skeletal δ13C levels in symbiotic reef corals are believed to be predominantly influenced by metabolic fractionation. Therefore, environmental variables influencing coral metabolism should also affect skeletal δ13C levels. To test this hypothesis, we measured the effects of light (which drives photosynthesis) and relative zooplankton levels (heterotrophy) on skeletal δ13C values in the corals Pavona clavus and P. gigantea at two depths (1 m and 7 m). For both species, decreases in light or increases in zooplankton resulted in significant decreases in skeletal δ13C levels. A significant decrease in δ13C values with depth was observed in Pavona gigantea only. Thus, light and zooplankton directly affect coral skeletal δ13C values, supporting the hypothesis that metabolic fractionation significantly contributes to skeletal δ13C levels. Simultaneous decreases in both light and zooplankton resulted in decreases in skeletal δ13C values, reflecting decreases in light. In Pavona clavus, intra-annual variation in skeletal δ13C values over one year correlated with seasonal changes in irradiance. Further study is needed to resolve how skeletal δ13C values vary at intermediate levels of irradiance and zooplankton, and in other coral species. Accepted: 14 July 1998  相似文献

Older adults are more variable than young adults on tasks that demand the simultaneous control of more than one effector, and the difference between age groups may be related to their different capacity of coordinating the force output of the involved effectors. The goal of this study was to determine whether age-associated differences in motor output variability during tasks involving the simultaneous dorsiflexion of two feet can be partially explained by differences in coordination and possibly attenuated by physical training. Ten young and 22 old adults (10 trained and 12 untrained old adults) volunteered to participate in the study. Trained older adults had experience in a high-intensity mixed modality training (MMT) regime for a minimum of 1?year. Volunteers performed successive trials of a constant force task and a goal-directed task, with and without visual feedback. Within- and between-trial variability were calculated and coordination was quantified using the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) approach (i.e., co-variation of the force outputs of both feet were used to quantify a motor synergy index). The distribution of mitochondria is sensitive to physiological stresses and changes in metabolic demands. Consequently, it is important to carefully define the conditions facilitating live imaging of mitochondrial transport in dissected animal preparations. In this study, we examined Schneider's and the haemolymph-like solutions HL3 and HL6 for their suitability to image mitochondrial transport in motor axons of dissected Drosophila melanogaster larvae. Overall, mitochondrial transport kinetics in larval motor axons appeared similar among all three solutions. Unexpectedly, HL3 solution selectively increased the length of mitochondria in the context of the net-direction of transport. We also found that mitochondrial transport is sensitive to the extracellular Ca(2+) but not glutamate concentration. High concentrations of extracellular glutamate affected only the ratio between motile and stationary mitochondria. Our study offers a valuable overview of mitochondrial transport kinetics in larval motor axons of Drosophila under various conditions, guiding future studies genetically dissecting mechanisms of mitochondrial transport.  相似文献

Neotropical populations of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella L. have seasonal cycles of growth and decrease, and moth migration plays a fundamental role in generating such population dynamics. Since the oscillation of these populations is predictable, photoperiod might operate as a signal that triggers the migratory behaviour of the insect. Migration in insects is usually preceded by reproductive diapause, a photoperiodic response that can be characterised by morphological, physiological and behavioural alterations that permit to discriminate between migratory and non-migratory forms. In this study, I tested whether the pre-imaginal and reproductive development of P. xylostella from Minas Gerais (Brazil) is affected by artificial day-lengths that are equivalent to the periods of natural population growth or decrease. No evidence of photoperiodic response was found for the insect reared in laboratory on five different constant photoperiods, from 8h to 16h of light per day. There was no significant variation in survival and duration of egg, larva, and pupa stages or in pupal weight, adult size (forewing length), fecundity, and longevity. Although some species have geographically distinct photoperiodic responses, previous assumptions that cosmopolitan P. xylostella responds to photoperiod in temperate regions was questioned. Migratory and population seasonality among neotropical populations of P. xylostella certainly occurs independently of the photoperiodic announcement of seasonal changes in habitat quality.  相似文献

Heparan sulfate (HS) proteoglycans modulate the biological activity of a number of growth factors in development, homeostasis, and cancer. Specific modifications of HS chains by HS biosynthetic enzymes have been implicated in growth factor signaling in multiple aspects of organogenesis. Although the role of HS 6-O-sulfotransferases has been described in processes such as trachea formation in Drosophila and vasculogenesis in zebrafish, little is known about how HS 6-O-sulfotransferases (Hs6st1-3 in mice) influence mouse development. To address this issue, we generated a conditionally mutant Hs6st1 mouse line and then generated mice with systemic inactivation of Hs6st1. Hs6st1-null pups were viable and grossly normal at birth. The lack of obvious abnormalities in lung, liver, and kidney, which express high levels of Hs6st1 during development, suggests that at least during embryonic life, the loss of Hs6st1 function may be compensated for by mechanisms involving other HS modifying enzymes. During early adulthood, however, Hs6st1-null mice failed to thrive and exhibited growth retardation, body weight loss, enlargement of airspaces in the lung and, in some cases, lethality. Our results suggest a potentially critical role for HS 6-O sulfation by Hs6st1 in postnatal processes.  相似文献

Snakes of the opisthoglyphous genus Philodryas are widespread in South America and cause most bites by colubrids in this region. In this study, we examined the neurotoxic and myotoxic effects of venom from Philodryas patagoniensis in biventer cervicis and phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparations and we compared the biochemical activities of venoms from P. patagoniensis and Philodryas olfersii. Philodryas patagoniensis venom (40 microg/mL) had no effect on mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparations but caused time-dependent neuromuscular blockade of chick biventer cervicis preparations. This blockade was not reversed by washing. The highest concentration of venom tested (40 microg/mL) significantly reduced (p<0.05) the contractures to exogenous acetylcholine (55 microM and 110 microM) and K(+) (13.4 mM) after 120 min; lower concentrations of venom had no consistent or significant effect on these responses. Venom caused a concentration- and time-dependent release of creatine kinase (CK) from biventer cervicis preparations. Histological analysis showed contracted muscle fibers at low venom concentrations and myonecrosis at high concentrations. Philodryas venoms had low esterase and phospholipase A(2) but high proteolytic activities compared to the pitviper Bothrops jararaca. SDS-PAGE showed that the Philodryas venoms had similar electrophoretic profiles, with most proteins having a molecular mass of 25-80 kDa. Both of the Philodryas venoms cross-reacted with bothropic antivenom in ELISA, indicating the presence of proteins immunologically related to Bothrops venoms. RP-HPLC of P. patagoniensis venom yielded four major peaks, each of which contained several proteins, as shown by SDS-PAGE. These results indicate that P. patagoniensis venom has neurotoxic and myotoxic components that may contribute to the effects of envenoming by this species.  相似文献
