An experiment was performed during the grazing seasons of 1998, 1999 and 2000 to study the influence of the antiparasitic drug ivermectin and the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans on cattle dung disintegration. The faeces originated from groups of animals that were part of a separate grazing experiment where different control strategies for nematode parasite infections were investigated. Each group consisted of 10 first-season grazing cattle that were either untreated, treated with the ivermectin sustained-release bolus, or fed chlamydospores of D. flagrans. Faeces were collected monthly on 4 occasions and out of pooled faeces from each group, 4 artificial 1 kg dung pats were prepared and deposited on nylon mesh on an enclosed pasture and protected from birds. The position of the new set of pats was repeated throughout the 3 years of the study. Each year, the dung pats were weighed 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks after deposition and immediately afterwards replaced to their initial positions.

Results showed that there was no difference in faecal pat disintegration between groups. However, the time-lag between deposition and complete disintegration of the faeces varied significantly between deposition occasions. Dung pats disappeared within 2 weeks (visual observation) when subjected to heavy rainfall early after deposition, whereas an extended dry period coincided with faeces still remaining 12 months after deposition.

Extensive research has examined the effects of social isolation in neonatal and adult animal populations, but few studies have examined the effect of social isolation in early adulthood. Animals reaching reproductive age often experience extensive social changes as they leave their natal site, and a social stressor like isolation may uniquely affect this age group. Furthermore, adolescence is a time when sex differences in behavior become more pronounced. As such, the effects of social stressors are likely to vary by sex. In this study, we used noninvasive methods to evaluate stress responses to social change in male and female subadult chickens (Gallus gallus). Half of the birds experienced regular sessions of social isolation over the course of 2 wk, while the other half were never isolated. Subsequently, all of the animals were exposed to a suite of three novel probes, including an open‐field test. We monitored the birds’ behavioral (head movements) and physiological (fecal glucocorticoid metabolites, FGM) response to the tests. Our results indicate that, for subadult chickens, the effect of social isolation is sex dependent: Male FGM and behavioral responses did not change with subsequent experiences, in contrast to females. Females also exhibited more social reinstatement behavior compared to males. Our results are consistent with the expectations of differences between the sexes based on changes in the social environment due to sex‐biased dispersal patterns. For both sexes, the FGM and behavioral responses varied independently, which highlights the necessity for multiple measures of stress in animal populations.  相似文献

The histology of the paracloacal 'musk' glands of adult American alligators ( Alligator mississippiensis ) is described. The gland is a single secretory sac with a single duct and a central lumen partially occluded by a central, cylindrical conglomerate of cells and secretion product. The capsule of the gland consists of an outer layer of smooth muscle and an inner layer of connective tissue containing collagen and elastin fibres. Septa carrying blood vessels radiate from the connective tissue layer of the capsule to the border of the central conglomerate. Parenchymal cells containing lipid droplets enlarge from the periphery to the centre of the gland. Secretions formed by degeneration of cells in the central cylinder are concentrated near the secretory duct. Histochemical tests indicate lipids but not mucopolysaccharides in the glandular exudate.  相似文献

The elygium is a darkly pigmented projection over the pupil of the tadpoles of certain species that live mostly at high altitudes. It has been suggested that this structure shades the retina, protecting it from high UV levels. In post‐metamorphic individuals, the elygium is replaced by a structure known as an umbraculum. Confusion arose in the past from the inconsistent use of terminology when referring to these two structures. While they may serve the same function, these structures differ fundamentally in structure and origin. Our investigation of the ultrastructure of the eye in Amietia vertebralis tadpoles, using electron and light microscopy, revealed that the elygium consists of an accumulation of melanophores situated within the inner cornea, whereas the umbraculum is a dorsal extension of the iris pigment epithelium, analogous to the ventral pupillary nodule, which is present in most frog species. In A. vertebralis, the umbraculum starts to develop on the iris of older tadpoles (Gosner [ 1960 ] stage 37 Herpetologica 16:183–190), medial to the overlying elygium. A smaller, ventral elygium is also present in this species and is similar in structure to the dorsal elygium. The development of the elygium over a six‐month period is also described. J. The felid-specific urinary odour compound 3-mercapto-3-methylbutanol and its precursors have been found in several felid species in captivity, but its presence in wild felids has not previously been investigated. We analysed the naturally deposited scent marks from three species of wild, free-ranging big cats in Northern Botswana and found 3-mercapto-3-methylbutanol in four samples of leopard urine (N = 13), but not in lion urine (N = 15) or cheetah urine (N = 6). Individual variation in the presence of the tomcat compound in samples from big cats in the wild may reconcile conflicting results from captive cats.  相似文献

Background  

Amino acid repeat-containing proteins have a broad range of functions and their identification is of relevance to many experimental biologists. In human-infective protozoan parasites (such as the Kinetoplastid and Plasmodium species), they are implicated in immune evasion and have been shown to influence virulence and pathogenicity. RepSeq is a new database of amino acid repeat-containing proteins found in lower eukaryotic pathogens. The RepSeq database is accessed via a web-based application which also provides links to related online tools and databases for further analyses.  相似文献
