Acid-soluble nucleotides of pinto bean leaves at different stages of development

Acid-soluble nucleotides of unifoliate leaves of Pinto bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were determined at young, mature, and senescent stages of development. At least 25 components could be distinguished on the basis of inorganic phosphorus determinations and 37 or more fractions on the basis of ³²P labeling, with adenosine di- and triphosphates accounting for 60% of the total moles of nucleotide. The total nucleotide P and inorganic P, on a fresh weight basis, decreased about 44% between each stage of leaf development, but decrements in the levels of individual nucleotides varied from this over-all pattern.     

Microbiological and Pharmacological Behavior of 7-Chlorolincomycin

Replacement of the 7-(R) hydroxyl group of lincomycin by a 7-chloro-substituent produced a compound with greater in vitro activity than the parent. Laboratory studies of this compound showed it to be highly active against all of the following strains of gram-positive organisms examined, including penicillinase- and nonpenicillinase-producing staphylococci, Diplococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus viridans and Streptococcus pyogenes. The enterococci, as well as all the gram-negative organisms tested, with the exception of some strains of Haemophilus, were uniformly insensitive to this agent. The activity of 7-chlorolincomycin was not affected by serum or inoculum size. Resistance developed in a slow stepwise pattern. Peak levels of approximately 2 mug/ml were achieved in the serum of volunteers after ingestion of 150 mg either in the fasting state or after a meal. No untoward effects were noted. The antibiotic appears to be of potential value in the treatment of infections due to gram-positive organisms, with the exception of enterococcus.     

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Emphysema—Is Exercise Beneficial?

Following a six-week program of training in a series of exercises, a significant number of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema showed decided improvement in functional activity. Subjective improvement also was noted and kept the patient motivation high.Preliminary observations indicated that the improvement could be maintained long after the end of the training period.
