Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint not only prevents mouth opening and chewing, but also affects the growth and position of the mandible. This produces progressive facial distortion with devastating psychosocial effects compounding the already difficult problem of not being able to open the mouth. Over the past 6 years, 18 patients in Canada and Taiwan were treated by excision of a large block of bone at the ankylosis and repositioning of the jaw, with the addition of osteotomies as necessary to produce a symmetrical face with good occlusion. Bilateral cases were treated at one operation in a similar way. The temporomandibular joint and absent ramus were constructed with a costochondral graft taken from the opposite chest. Some patients were treated with intermaxillary fixation for 8 weeks, while others had no fixation, but there was no difference in the effectiveness of correction of the ankylosis. 相似文献

Summary The induction of yeast cell aggregates in a column reactor was initiated by packing yeast cell paste of Saccharomyces uvarum into the column, and then YMP broth was fed into the column from the bottom at a linear flow rate of 2.5 cm/h. Thereafter, yeast cells aggregated in the column within 48 h without a supply of oxygen. When this yeast aggregate column reactor was used for continuous ethanol production, a final ethanol concentration of 10.8% (w/v) was obtained from 23% (w/v) of glucose in a YMP broth with a dilution rate of 0.05 h-1, and 4.9% (w/v) was obtained from 10% (w/v) of glucose with a dilution rate of 0.6 h-1. The theoretical yield was above 97% in both cases. The ethanol production rates were 13 g1 h-1 l-1 and 90 g1 h-1 l-1 for producing 10.8% (w/v) and 4.9% (w/v) of ethanol respectively. Summary An on-line respiratory quotient control system has been developed for the continuous cultivation of baker's yeast. This system is based on moving identification of the microbial dynamics. The optimal dilution rate that was selected as the control variable was determined by minimizing a performance index. Without resorting to complicated microbial analysis, a simple and practical moving model is obtained by continually updating the input and output data. The experimental results indicate the satisfactory controllability of the present system and the possible extention of the proposed method to other bioprocesses. 相似文献

Theoretical computations are performed on the comparative A-T versus G-C binding selectivities of two DNA intercalating molecules recently synthesized by Wilson et al. These are derivatives of phenanthrene and anthracene with side chains containing an hydroxy group bound to its C alpha carbon and a cationic amino group bound to its C beta carbon. We have optimized the binding energies of these phenanthrene and anthracene derivatives (1 and 2, respectively) to the double-stranded tetramers d(ATAT)2 and d(GCGC)2, the intercalation occurring in the central pyrimidine (3'-5') purine sequence. The sum of the intercalator-oligonucleotide intermolecular interaction energy plus the conformational energy variation of the intercalator upon binding were computed by the SIBFA procedures, which use empirical formulas based on ab initio SCF computations. Both compounds are found to bind more favourably to the AT sequence than to the GC one. Moreover, the affinity of 1 for the AT oligomer is computed to be larger than that of 2, whereas conversely that of 2 is larger than that of 1 for the GC oligomer. The AT versus GC binding selectivity of 1 is significantly larger than that of 2. These results are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings of Wilson et al. However, contrary to the suggestion of these authors the alpha-hydroxy group of the side chain of the intercalators does not seem to play a decisive role in determining the A-T specificity. 相似文献

Feeding a basal diet free of vitamins E and C to weanling male rats for 8 months resulted in biochemical changes characteristic of vitamin E deficiency. These included increased liver thiobarbituric acid values; decreased blood GSH levels, plasma vitamin E levels, and glutathione peroxidase activities; and increased activities of plasma pyruvate kinase, glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase, creatine kinase, lactic dehydrogenase, and malic dehydrogenase. Tube-feeding vitamin C for 21 days resulted in partial reversal effects on the above parameters except activities of glutathione peroxidase, lactic dehydrogenase, and malic dehydrogenase. The results suggest that vitamin C may spare in part the metabolism of vitamin E through its antioxidant property. 相似文献

A chemically defined medium (CC-494) was used to study the nutritional requirements of three spiroplasmas representing three distinct serogroups: flower spiroplasmas [Spiroplasma floricola and FS (SR-3)] and honeybee spiroplasma [HBS (AS-576)]. Glucose, fructose, and mannose were utilized by all three spiroplasmas. In addition, the honeybee spiroplasma could ferment trehalose, FS (SR-3) could ferment sucrose, and S. floricola could ferment trehalose, sucrose, and raffinose. The three spiroplasmas varied greatly in their requirements of amino acids for growth. S. floricola was the only strain that utilized arginine. HBS (AS-576) required at least one purine and one pyrimidine base (either free base or ribonucleoside) for growth, while both flower spiroplasmas grew with only one base in the medium. Oleic acid, cholesterol, and bovine serum albumin were essential to all three spiroplasmas. Palmitic acid, which was nonessential, promoted growth significantly. 相似文献

Sequence homology was found by computer analysis between potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTV) RNA and U3B snRNA of Novikoff hepatoma cells. This homology is colinear in arrangement, extends in length to 81% of the entire U3B snRNA molecule and is involved in the PSTV molecule unique sites which, if depicted in terms of the secondary structure of the circular PSTV molecule, reveal a conspicuous regularity in their location. Preparation and performance of immobilized yeast cells in columns containing no inert carrier 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Schizosaccharomyces pombe was cultivated in a medium of glucose (10 g/L) malt extract (3 g/L), yeast extract (3 g/L), and bactopeptone (5 g/L) to form flocs. More than 95% of the cell population were flocculated. Variation in glucose concentration (from 10 to 100 g/L) did not affect flocculation. Yeast extract helped induce flocculation. Application of the immobilized yeast for the continuous production of ethanol was tested in a column reactor. Soft yeast flocs (50-200 mesh) underwent morphological changes to heavy particles (0.1-0.3 cm diameter) after continuously being fed with fresh substrates in the column. Productivity as high as 87 g EtOH L(-1) h(-1) was obtained when a 150 g/L glucose medium was fed. The performance of this yeast reactor was stable over a two-month period. The ethanol yield was 97% of the theoretical maximum based upon glucose consumed. 相似文献

There is a linear relationship between the PaCO2 and blood hydrogen ion concentration in normal dogs, but for theoretical reasons to be discussed, we questioned whether this relationship would apply in animals with metabolic acidosis or alkalosis. To study this in more detail, animals were divided into three groups: normal, metabolically acidotic, and metabolically alkalotic. Following anesthesia and bilateral ureteral ligation, dogs were intubated and ventilated to produce acute steady state PaCO2 values corresponding to the range observed during disease states. Changes in the volume and electrolyte composition of the gastrointestinal fluid and urine as well as the concentration and distribution of lactate were evaluated in all experiments. We observed the previously described linear relationship between the PaCO2 and blood hydrogen ion concentration in normal dogs, but the slope of the regression line differed significantly from those of dogs with metabolic acidosis and metabolic alkalosis. On the other hand, there was a consistent relationship between the ratio of the PaCO2 values, but not the absolute PaCO2, and the change in the plasma bicarbonate concentration over a wide range of PaCO2 values in all groups of dogs.
