The phylogenetic relationships among Primates (human), Artiodactyla (cow), Cetacea (whale), Carnivora (seal), and Rodentia (mouse and rat) were estimated from the inferred amino acid sequences of the mitochondrial genomes using Marsupialia (opossum), Aves (chicken), and Amphibia (Xenopus) as an outgroup. The overall evidence of the maximum likelihood analysis suggests that Rodentia is an outgroup to the other four eutherian orders and that Cetacea and Artiodactyla form a clade with Carnivora as a sister taxon irrespective of the assumed model for amino acid substitutions. Although there remains an uncertainty concerning the relation among Artiodactyla, Cetacea, and Carnivora, the existence of a clade formed by these three orders and the outgroup status of Rodentia to the other eutherian orders seems to be firmly established. However, analyses of individual genes do not necessarily conform to this conclusion, and some of the genes reject the putatively correct tree with nearly 5% significance. Although this discrepancy can be due to convergent or parallel evolution in the specific genes, it was pointed out that, even without a particular reason, such a discrepancy can occur in 5% of the cases if the branching among the orders in question occurred within a short period. Due to uncertainty about the assumed model underlying the phylogenetic inference, this can occur even more frequently. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and nutrient-uptake characteristics of Fe-deficiency resistant and susceptible subclover (Trifolium subterraneum L., T. yanninicum Katzn. and Morley, T. brachcalycinum Katzn. and Morley) cultivars on a calcareous soil. Ten subclover cultivars showing varying susceptibilities to Fe-deficiency chlorosis (Karridale, Nangeela, Geraldton, Mt. Barker, Woogenellup, Larisa, Trikkala, Rosedale, Koala and Clare) were grown on a low-Fe, calcareous soil (Petrocalcic Paleustoll) under moist (18% water content, 85% of water holding capacity) and water-saturated conditions using a Cone-tainer® culture system. Chlorosis and its correlation with growth traits and mineral nutrition of the 10 cultivars were examined. The Fe-deficiency susceptibilities of the 10 cultivars decreased in the above order under the moist condition, but in slightly different order under the saturated condition. Shoot and root dry weights, total dry weight, and root-to-shoot ratio were each negatively correlated with chlorosis under both soil-moisture conditions, as was total shoot content of P, Ca, Fe, Mn and Zn. Shoot P and Fe concentrations were each positively correlated with chlorosis under the moist soil condition. Iron and Cu utilization efficiencies (biomass per unit weight of nutrient) in the shoot were each negatively correlated with chlorosis under the moist soil condition. These results suggest that there may be several characteristics of Fe-deficiency chlorosis resistance in subclovers, such as a more effective soil-Fe mobilizing mechanism(s), more balanced nutrition, lower required Fe concentration in the shoot, higher shoot-Fe utilization efficiency, and higher root/shoot ratio under Fe-deficiency stress conditions. 相似文献

The gene encoding a Verotoxin 2 variant, VTvp1, was mutated by oligonucleotide-directed site-specific mutagenesis. Among 6 mutant toxins encoded by the mutated genes, E167Q-R170L (glutamic acid at position 167 and arginine at position 170 from N-terminus of the A subunit were replaced by glutamine and leucine, respectively) was found to have markedly decreased activities; inhibition of protein synthesis, Vero cell cytotoxicity and mouse lethality of the purified E167Q-R170L were 1/1,900, 1/125,000 and 1/2,000, respectively, of those of the purified wild-type VT2vp1. Since the antigenic property of the E167Q-R170L was demonstrated to be similar to that of the wild-type VT2vp1 by Ouchterlony double gel diffusion test and by neutralization test of Vero cell cytotoxicity of the VT2vp1, a possibility to use the mutant VT2vp1, E167Q-R170L, as a toxoid is discussed. 相似文献

作者对现有的气体交换法的叶室作了改进。从实验上检验了作者根据电学类比分析和模拟检验得到的结论:在已有的气体交换测定装置中,空气流速不变,叶片的边界层导度也固定不变,所得到的结论用于边界层导度变化的情形时,会造成比较大的误差。现加一障碍物使得流过叶片的风速减小,从而改变叶片的边界层导度。通过测量在不同边界层导度下同一叶片的光强曲线可以考察不同边界层导度下的气孔导度、光合速率、蒸腾速率以及它们之间的相互关系。实验结果与作者以前的电学类比分析和模拟得到的结论是基本一致的 相似文献

Graur et al.'s (1991) hypothesis that the guinea pig-like rodents have an
evolutionary origin within mammals that is separate from that of other
rodents (the rodent-polyphyly hypothesis) was reexamined by the
maximum-likelihood method for protein phylogeny, as well as by the
maximum-parsimony and neighbor-joining methods. The overall evidence does
not support Graur et al.'s hypothesis, which radically contradicts the
traditional view of rodent monophyly. This work demonstrates that we must
be careful in choosing a proper method for phylogenetic inference and that
an argument based on a small data set (with respect to the length of the
sequence and especially the number of species) may be unstable.
