Nitrogen fixation in coniferous bark litter

Summary Non-symbiotic heterotrophic N₂ fixation in coniferous bark litter was investigated with the acetylene reduction assay under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The litter studied was composed essentially of bark, of pH 5 and a C/N ratio of 101; the ratio of available C to available N, which governs N₂ fixation, was considerably higher. The rate of N₂ fixation was estimated as 2.5–4.4 g N. g^–1 dry wt. day^–1. Nitrogenase activity was still evident after seven months of incubation under aerobic conditions. The N₂-ase activity was O₂ dependent: under anaerobic conditions no N₂-ase activity was found unless a fermentable C source was added. The importance of N₂ fixation in N-poor litter for the maintenance of soil fertility is emphasized.     

Thermography as a predictive tool for laser treatment of port-wine stains

The argon laser, which has been proven both useful and safe for port-wine stain therapy, interacts with the hemoglobin of the vessels. In a percentage of cases, this treatment is still inefficient, and there is a lack of correlation between these bad results and clinical or histologic criteria. Thermography, which explores the vascularization of the port-wine stain, leads us to consider port-wine stains from a physical point of view. This very simple test shows no correlation with the clinical parameters of port-wine stain but is closely related to the results obtained with laser therapy. It seems to be a good criterion to estimate the argon laser treatment prognosis.     

The regulatory chain in the p36-kd substrate complex of viral tyrosine-specific protein kinases is related in sequence to the S-100 protein of glial cells.

The major cytoplasmic target of various tyrosine-specific protein kinases is a 36-kd protein (p36). This protein can exist as a monomer or as a complex with a small subunit which seems to have a regulatory function. Amino acid sequence analysis of the small subunit from porcine intestine documents a unique polypeptide of 95 residues with a calculated mol. wt. close to 11 kd (p11). Since an immunologically related subunit of the same electrophoretic mobility is also found in the corresponding complex of chicken intestine p11 is well conserved across species. Unexpectedly, the sequence of p11 shows a high homology with the glia-specific protein S-100 whose biological function is not known. Although both proteins are dimers of rather small polypeptides we have not been able to detect in our preparations of p11 the moderate Ca2+ binding known for S-100. Certain implications of this sequence relation are discussed.     

3',5'-Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate- and Ca2+-Calmodulin-Dependent Endogenous Protein Phosphorylation Activity in Membranes of the Bovine Chromaffin Secretory Vesicles: Identification of Two Phosphorylated Components as Tyrosine Hydroxylase and Protein Kinase Regulatory Subunit Type II

Abstract: Membranes of the secretory vesicles from bovine adrenal medulla were investigated for the presence of the endogenous protein phosphorylation activity. Seven phosphoprotein bands in the molecular weight range of 250,000 to 30,000 were observed by means of the sodium dodecyl sulphate electrophoresis and autoradiography. On the basis of the criteria of molecular weight, selective stimulation of the phosphorylation by cyclic AMP (as compared with cyclic GMP) and immunoprecipitation by specific antibodies, band 5 (molecular weight 60,300) was found to represent the phosphorylated form of the secretory vesicle-bound tyrosine hydroxylase. The electrophoretic mobility, the stimulatory and inhibitory effects of cyclic AMP in presence of Mg²⁺ and Zn,²⁺ respectively, and immunoreactivity toward antibodies showed band 6 to contain two forms of the regulatory subunits of the type II cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase, distinguishable by their molecular weights (56,000 and 52,000, respectively). Phosphorylation of band 7 (molecular weight 29,800) was stimulated about 2 to 3 times by Ca²⁺ and calmodulin in the concentration range of both agents believed to occur in the secretory tissues under physiological conditions.
