Who is nutritionally vulnerable in Bosnia-Hercegovina?

OBJECTIVE--To monitor nutritional status and food security in order to identify nutritionally vulnerable groups. DESIGN--Members of five different household groups (urban and rural residents, displaced people in collective centres and private accommodation, elderly people living without younger family) and all residents of two old people''s homes were prospectively followed. Households were selected from 20 local communities and nine collective centres. SETTING--Monitoring carried out in three besieged areas of Bosnia-Hercegovina (Sarajevo, Tuzla, and Zenica). SUBJECTS--1739 individuals sampled. INTERVENTIONS--Data collected every month from December 1993 to May 1994. Information on household food security was collected through structured questionnaires. All subjects were weighed and their heights measured. Weight for age Z scores were calculated for children; body mass index was calculated for adults and elderly people. RESULTS--From December 1993 to February 1994, before a temporary cease fire, access to food was reduced. In February 1994 no significant signs of undernutrition were detected among children or adults, but elderly people had higher than expected levels of undernutrition (15.5% with body mass index < 18.5), a higher rate of weight loss than adults (1.2 kg over two months), and a higher prevalence of self reported illness. CONCLUSIONS--Elderly people in Bosnia-Hercegovina are at greater risk of undernutrition than other age groups. Undernutrition may be precipitated in elderly people by sickness, cold, stress, and problems related to food preparation. The health and welfare of elderly people during the emergency in Bosnia-Hercegovina require special attention, and integrated age care programmes are needed.     

CO2 elimination as a function of frequency and tidal volume in rabbits during HFO

CO2 elimination (VCO2) was monitored during high-frequency oscillation (HFO) over a frequency (f) range of 2-30 Hz in anesthetized and paralyzed rabbits to determine whether effective gas exchange could be achieved in this species, to determine the f and tidal volume (VT) dependence of gas exchange in this species, and to compare these results with those from dog and human studies. We were able to produce VCO2 levels during HFO that exceeded normal steady-state levels of CO2 production with VT's less than the total dead space volume. VCO2 was related to f in a curvilinear fashion, whereas in some rabbits VCO2 became independent of f at higher frequencies. This curvilinear relationship between f and VCO2 is similar to data from humans but contrasts with the linear relationship found in dogs. Evidence is presented indicating frequency-dependent behavior of gas exchange is correlated with a frequency-dependent decrease in respiratory system resistance. We propose that the frequency-dependent mechanical properties of the rabbit lung may also account for the species differences in HFO gas exchange.     

Sensitive assay of hydroxyl free radical formation utilizing high pressure liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection of phenol and salicylate hydroxylation products

Evidence is presented for a sensitive method useful for the detection of hydroxyl free radical generation in various systems. The methodology employs high pressure liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (LCED) for the quantification and identification of the hydroxylation products from the reaction of OH with both phenol and salicylate. A detection limit of less than 1 pmol for the hydroxylation products has been achieved with electrochemical detector responses linear over at least three orders of magnitude. Detection and quantitation of the hydroxylation products obtained and formed during OH generation from biologically meaningful systems have been demonstrated. The three systems utilized were ADP/FE(II)/H2O/, hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase plus chelated iron, and UV photolysis of H2O2.     

Cell surface topography of Candida and Leucosporidium yeasts as revealed by scanning electron microscopy.

The cell surface topography of the following yeast strains was examined by scanning electron microscopy: Candida slooffii, C. lipolytica, Leucosporidium frigidum, and L. nivalis. Multipolar and lateral budding were observed in the Candida yeasts in contrast to bipolar budding in the Leucosporidium species. The cell surface topography and the morphology of the bud and birth scars in these yeasts differed markedly. Apart from the bud and birth scars, the cells of C. slooffii showed a relatively smooth topography. The bud scars were seen as a circular ridge of wall material surrounding a markedly convex scar plug. Birth scars were raised, rounded structures, which appeared to distend upon cell growth. In contrast, bud scars of C. lipolytica were platelike, lacked a distinct annulus of wall material, and were much less protuberent than those of C. slooffii. Birth scars were a more permanent feature of these cells. The topography of Leucosporidium yeasts was characterized by the presence of numerous protrusions on the cell surface. In some cases, the entire cell surface was covered by these protrusions. There appeared to be some correlations between the age of the cell and the extent of surface protrusions and degree of surface convolution...     

Does cyclic GMP mediate amylase release from mouse parotid acini?

In mouse parotid acini both cholinergic and beta-adrenergic agonists increased intracellular levels of cyclic-GMP (c-GMP) as well as amylase release. The derivative of c-GMP, 8-bromo-c-GMP, mimicked the effects of cholinergic and beta-adrenergic stimulation on amylase release. Nitroprusside (NP), hydroxylamine (HA) and sodium azide (NaA) increased c-GMP levels and also enhanced amylase release in a dose-dependent manner; cyclic-AMP (c-AMP) levels were not affected. The phosphodiesterase inhibitor 3-isobutyl-1-methyl-xanthine (MIX) enhanced the effects of carbachol on both c-GMP accumulation and amylase release. These results suggest that c-GMP may mediate the actions of cholinergic agonists and at least partially mediate the actions of beta-adrenergic agonists on mouse parotid enzyme release.     

Taxonomic variation in total leaf protein amino acid compositions of grasses

Leaves of greenhouse grown grasses had free protein amino acid contents of generally less than 5 % total amino acids, while field collected grasses averaged 14.7 % free protein amino acid contents. Taxonomic patterns are detectable in the total leaf amino acid profiles of grasses from both sources, those of pooids being distinguishable from those of chloridoids and panicoids, and those of danthonioids showing an intermediate pattern. Leaf profiles of Oryza, Stipeae, and Ehrharteae resemble one another, and are more like those of pooids than those of panicoids. Variations in Thr and Leu are apparently associated with differences in photosynthetic pathway. Grass leaves are generally low in total amino acid contents (2.2 ? 1.0 g % fr. wt), with Ile, Val and Met + Cys identified as the limiting essential amino acids. However, the nutritional ‘chemical scores’ of grass leaf proteins are high (75 %, based on the WHO scoring pattern).     

Ratio of inferior olivary cells to Purkinje cells in a marsupial (Trichosurus vulpecula)

An indirect estimate of the extent of branching of the olivary axons in the cerebellum in a marsupial (Trichosurus vulpecula) was carried out. The cells in the inferior olivary nuclear complex (IOC) of both sides were estimated (mean = 57,200), as were the cerebellar Purkinje cells (mean = 881,300). Assuming that all climbing fibers arise from IOC cells and that each Purkinje cell receives a climbing fiber input, each IOC cell sends climbing fiber terminals to 15 Purkinje cells.
